The indigenous people of Hawaii and Alaska urged the UN to ensure their legitimate right to self-determination
The statement said Hawaii and Alaska "were absorbed by the United States in 1959 through deception and deliberate violation of the UN mandate and principles, and the process of self-determination." The document calls on the World Organization to "correct the error."
It stresses that “Russia's sale of Alaska to the US in 1867 did not mean transferring sovereignty over the Alaska to the United States,” and the unceremonious “US invasion of Hawaii in 1893 was undertaken in violation of bilateral treaties and international law.”
Representatives of peoples intend to pursue their goals in a peaceful way through UN mechanisms and through referendums. For this, a joint working group was created, called the Alliance of Alaska-Hawaii for Self-Determination.
Hawaii spokesman Leon Siu told reporters yesterday: “Our culture is repressed. However, the actions of the United States are directed not only against our culture, but also of peace on the planet, since the military base Pearl Harbor is located in Hawaii. During military exercises they pollute our land and water. From this, people get sick. This is an abuse of our land and people. We don't want to be part of the war machine. ”
In turn, the representative of Alaska, Ronald Barnes, called the US policy on indigenous peoples "occupation". “The US and Alaska authorities, to the detriment of the people, dispose of the property to which they are not entitled,” he said. “They take our land and produce huge amounts of mineral resources, causing damage to the environment.”
