Baltic "quick reaction forces" learned to react quickly for two days
106
A two-day exercise of the newly formed “Baltic Battalion”, which will be part of the NATO rapid reaction force in the Baltic States, ended at the Adazhi training ground. The teachings were called Gungnir 2015. This is the second attempt to create a consolidated battalion of the Baltic military. The first attempt was made in 1994. It is noteworthy that the division ceased to exist several months before the Baltic countries joined NATO. Apparently, Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn decided that they would no longer need such military units after joining NATO.
Against the background of growing anti-Russian hysteria and at the behest of the United States, the Baltic states are increasing their defense spending and are resuming the activity of the Baltic Battalion. The battalion commander appointed Estonian officer Andriss Merilo.
Riga and Vilnius sent to the disposal of Merilo two infantry company, several sappers, fire spotters, military police officers and experts on the use of anti-tank weapons.
The Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian military have time until November 2015 of the year to prepare and pass NATO certification, which will enable them to become part of the announced rapid-reaction forces in Eastern Europe.
