UN: more than 600 thousand people in Ukraine need food
“There is an urgent need to provide food assistance to more than 670 thousand people, 90% of which are located in areas not controlled by the government,” the report says.
OCHA informed that over the past 7 days, “in cooperation with non-governmental organizations rations were distributed among 4,4 thousand people in the LPR and among 10 thousand people in the DPR”. In addition, 500 tons of products were transferred to the Dnipropetrovsk region for internally displaced persons.
The report indicates an acute shortage of drinking water and medicines. “The health of both internally displaced persons and other people affected by the conflict is deteriorating and requires action. Cardiovascular diseases, mental disorders and acute respiratory infections are widespread. Cases of malnutrition and acute diarrhea are reported in areas not controlled by the government, ”the report authors write.
The document emphasizes that the impossibility of a quick response to the needs of people is caused by a shortage of funds. “As of April 3, donors donated or pledged about 57 million to implement a humanitarian response plan, which is 18% of 316 million needed for 2015 a year,” the report says.
The largest amount (for April 3) was allocated by the Russian Federation - $ 5 million.
According to UN estimates, in total “about 5 million people in Ukraine need help, the number of internally displaced people in the country is 1,2 million, and more 777 thousand have taken refuge in neighboring countries, mainly in Russia”.
The total number of victims indicated in the report is 6090, although the actual number of dead may be more. "Full information about the victims during the last escalation of hostilities (from mid-January to mid-February) is still expected," they noted in the OCHA.
