March 19 - Submariner Day in the Russian Federation
The first submarine that became part of the Russian fleet was the Trout-type boat, presented to Nicholas II by his cousin, the German Kaiser Wilhelm II. However, the German submarine can not be considered a full-fledged gift. Giving her was presented, but the “gift” was tied to the conclusion of a contract for the construction of three submarines of type “E” Karp. It is believed that the "Karp" - a type of Russian submarines beginning of the XX century, but they were built in Germany. Construction of three boats of this type was carried out at the expense of the Russian Empire. All of them (and these are submarines named: “Crucian” (serial number 109), “Carp” (serial number 110) and “Kambala” (serial number 111) were introduced into the Russian fleet in 1907 year.
Less than two years after joining the fleet and arriving in Sevastopol, Kambala and its crew suffered a tragic fate.
The boat during the execution of training maneuvers was literally cut by the battleship Rostislav and sank at a depth of 56 meters. The tragedy that killed Capt. Rank II N.M. Belkin, midshipman DA Tuchkov, mine conductor F. I. Salnikov and another 17 crew member, occurred in May 1909. The catastrophe was investigated by a specially created commission, which concluded that the only surviving crew member — the lieutenant named Akvilonov who was at the time of the collision with the battleship on the bridge — was responsible for the tragedy. The lieutenant was sentenced to 6 months of imprisonment. In memory of the dead members of the crew of the submarine "Kambala" - at the burial site of 12-ti of them - at the memorial military cemetery of Sevastopol - a cutting room of the submarine was installed.
Two other submarines of the same type, Karas and Karp, were in service until the Russian Empire ceased to exist in 1917. The new authorities decided to place the submarines for conservation, after which they were in the hands of the Germans, and then in what was left of the Entente by then. But as it turned out, they were burdensome for the Entente. Karas and Karp flooded 26 on April 1919 of the year near Sevastopol. However, after 7 years, the Soviet authorities decided to raise the "Carp" to the surface, but only for one purpose - to cut the submarine into metal. Did this metal go to the creation of new ships - story is silent.
In the Soviet period, large-scale work on the construction of new submarines was launched in 1929 year. For ten years, the submarine fleet appeared around 180 submarines, of which 20 belonged to the large class. By 1941, the fleet, according to some data, had 198, on the other - 212 submarines, whose crews had to prove themselves on all sea, so to speak, fronts.
During the war years, the crews of submarines of the Baltic Fleet alone sank 144 enemy transport and warships. The total displacement of the sunk ships was more than 347 thousand tons. Six more German warships were disabled after torpedo attacks. These ships could not resist the fleet of the USSR.
Among the most famous submarines of World War II include the C-13, which entered service on July 31, 1941. This is the only submarine in its series (series E), which during all the years of the war performed combat missions and met Victory on the Baltic Sea.
The crew of this particular submarine made torpedo attacks, which are still considered exemplary. As a result of these attacks, which took place on 30 on January 10 in February on 1945, C-13 sank two German transport workers Wilhelm Gustloff and General Steuben. Commanded the submarine C-13 famous Alexander Marinesko, who received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union only after 45 years after the end of World War II - in 1990 year - after 37 years after his death.
The sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff liner was called “Attack of the Century”. Crew C-13 at one time was attacked by representatives of the so-called Western public. The main direction of the claims - on board of Wilhelm Gustloff were about 5 thousands of refugees (civilians). However, the “public” had to calm down, as subsequently the details of the “Attack of the Century” appeared. It turned out that the Germans decided to simply hide behind civilians, carrying over 2 thousands of military, military equipment, weapon different types. At the same time, the crew commander decided not to use the ship’s identification system as a civilian, hoping that for Wilhelm Gustloff he would remain invulnerable to Soviet submarines.
One of the streets of the Northern capital of Russia is named in honor of Alexander Ivanovich Marinesko. The grave of the famous hero-submariner is located at the Theological Cemetery of St. Petersburg.
The terrible force of the submarines of the USSR Navy has grown immeasurably after the appearance of atomic submarines in the fleet. These are real underwater cities that can perform assigned combat missions practically at any point of the world's oceans. The weapons carried by these submarines on board, nullify all the attempts of the “well-wishers” to furnish Russia with missile defense systems in order to reduce their defense capabilities.
The submarine fleet is replenished with new submarines of various classes, which is one of the key elements of the modernization program of the Russian Navy.
