Battle of tankman Kolobanova, made history

45
Leningrad in August 1941 was in a very difficult situation, events at the front on the outskirts of the city developed according to a very bad, dramatic scenario for the defending Soviet troops. On the night of August 7-8, German units from the 4th tank the groups attacked in the areas of the settlements Ivanovo and Big Sabsk, advancing towards the settlements Kingisepp and Volosovo. In just three days of fighting, the enemy troops approached the Kingisepp-Leningrad highway, and on August 13, German troops managed to cut the Kingisepp-Leningrad railway and highway and force the Luga River. Already on August 14, 38 army and 41 motorized German corps were able to break into the operational space and advance to Leningrad. On August 16, the cities of Kingisepp and Narva fell, on the same day units from the 1st German Corps occupied the western part of Novgorod, the threat of a breakthrough of German troops to Leningrad became more and more real. Before the famous tank battle, which glorifies the name of Kolobanov, there were only a few days left.

18 August 1941, the commander of the 3 tank company from the 1 battalion of the 1 Red Banner Tank Division of Senior Lieutenant Zinovy Kolobanova, was summoned personally by Major General V. Baranov. At that time, the headquarters of the unit was located in the basement of the cathedral, which was one of the attractions of Gatchina, which at that time was called Krasnogvardeisky. Verbally, Baranov gave Kolobanov an order to block at any cost three roads that led to Krasnogvardeysk from Kingisepp, Volosovo and Luga.

At that time, there were 5 heavy tanks KV-1 in the company of Kolobonov. Tankers loaded two rounds of armor-piercing projectiles into the vehicles; they took a little high-explosive fragmentation. The main purpose of Kolobanov’s tank crew was not to let German tanks into Krasnogvardeisk. On the same day, August 18, Senior Lieutenant Zinovy Kolobanov led his company towards the oncoming German units. He sent two of his cars to the Ludsk road, two more sent to the road to Volosovo, and he set up his own tank in an ambush organized at the crossroads of the road that connected the Tallinn highway with the road to Marienburg - the northern outskirts of Gatchina.

Battle of tankman Kolobanova, made history

Zinovy Kolobanov personally conducted a reconnaissance of the area with his crews, giving instructions on exactly where to equip positions for each of the tanks. At the same time, Kolobanov prudently forced tank crews to equip a caponier with 2 (one main and a spare one) and disguise positions carefully. It is worth noting that Zinovy Kolobanov was already quite an experienced tanker. He fought the Finnish war, burned three times in a tank, but always returned to the line. The task of blocking the three roads leading to Krasnogvardeysk could be managed only by him.

Kolobanov equipped his position near the State farm of Voyskovitsy, located opposite the Uchkhoz chicken farm - at the fork of the Tallinn highway and the road leading to Marienburg. He set up a position about 150 meters from the highway coming from Syaskelevo. At the same time, a deep caponier was equipped, which hid the car so that only the tower protruded. The second caponier for the reserve position was equipped not far from the first one. From the main position, the road to Syaskelevo was perfectly viewed and swept. In addition, on the sides of this road there were marshy areas of the terrain, which greatly hampered the maneuver of armored vehicles and played a role in the upcoming battle.

The position of Kolobanov and his KV-1E was located at a small height with clayey ground at a distance of 150 meters from the fork in the road. From this position, “Landmark No. 1” was clearly visible, two birch trees growing along the road, and approximately in 300 meters from the T-junction, which was designated as “Landmark No. 2”. Total sweep section of the road was about a kilometer. The 22 tank could easily fit in this area while maintaining a walking distance of 40 meters between them.

The choice of location was due to the fact that it was possible to fire from here in two directions. This was important, since the enemy could get on the road to Marienburg either on the way from Syaskelevo or from Troiskovits. If the Germans came from the Troops, they would have had to shoot in the forehead. For this reason, the caponier was dug directly opposite the intersection with the expectation that the course angle will be minimal. At the same time Kolobanov had to accept the fact that the distance between his tank and the fork in the road was reduced to a minimum.

After equipping the disguised positions, it remained only to wait for the approach of the forces of the enemy. The Germans appeared here only 20 August. In the afternoon, the tank crews of Lieutenant Evdokimov and Junior Lieutenant Degtyar from Kolobanov's company met a convoy of armored vehicles on the Luga highway, recording 5 destroyed tanks and 3 of the enemy armored personnel carrier at their own expense. Soon the enemy was seen by the crew of the Kolobanov tank. First, they noticed the scouts-motorcyclists, whom the tankers freely passed further, waiting for the appearance of the main forces of the German troops.

Around 14: 00 20 in August, after the air reconnaissance ended unsuccessfully for the Germans, German motorcyclists drove along the coastal road to the Troops farm. Behind them, tanks appeared on the road. During the one and a half, two minutes, while the enemy's head tank covered the distance to the intersection, Zinoviy Kolobanov managed to make sure that there were no enemy heavy tanks in the convoy. Then the plan of the upcoming battle ripened in his head. Kolobanov decided to skip the entire column to the section with two birches (Landmark No. XXUMX). In this case, all the enemy tanks had time to go through the turn at the beginning of the bulk road and found themselves under the fire of his screened KV-1 gun. In the column, apparently, there were light Czech tanks Pz.Kpfw.1 (t) from the German 35-th tank division (in a number of sources the 6-th or 1-th tank division is also attributed to the tank). After the battle plan had been drawn up, everything else was a matter of technique. Killing in the head, middle and end of the column, Senior Lieutenant Kolobanov not only blocked the road on both sides, but also deprived the enemy of the possibility of moving onto the road that led to Troiskovitsy.

After a traffic jam in the enemy convoy began, a terrible panic began. Some tanks, trying to get out of the fire, went down the slope and got stuck in the marshland, where they were finished off by the crew of Kolobanov. Other enemy vehicles, trying to turn around on a narrow road, ran across each other, knocking down the tracks and rollers. Frightened German crews jumped out of burning and padded cars and rushed between them in fear. However, many were killed by machine gun fire from a Soviet tank.

At first, the Nazis did not understand where exactly they were shot from. They began to hit all the mounds of hay in sight, thinking that they were camouflaged with tanks or anti-tank guns. However, they soon spotted a disguised KV. After that, an unequal tank duel began. A whole hail of shells hit the KV-1E, but they could not do something that was dug around the tower by a Soviet heavy tank that was equipped with additional 25-mm screens. And although there was no trace of disguise, and the position of the Soviet tankmen was known to the Germans, this did not affect the outcome of the battle.

The battle lasted only 30 minutes, but during this time, Kolobanov’s crew was able to smash the German tank column, knocking out all the 22 vehicles that were in it. From the double ammunition taken on board, Kolobanov shot 98 armor-piercing shells. Later the battle continued, but the Germans no longer climbed ahead. On the contrary, they began to use for fire support tanks Pz.Kpfw.IV and anti-tank guns that fired from long distances. This stage of the battle did not bring any special dividends to the parties: the Germans could not destroy Kolobanov’s tank, and the Soviet tankman did not declare the enemy’s vehicles destroyed. At the same time, at the second stage of the battle, all observation devices were destroyed on the Kolobanov tank and the tower was wedged. After the tank got out of battle, the crew counted more than 100 hits on it.

The whole company Kolobanova that day destroyed the enemy's 43 tank. Including the crew of Junior Lieutenant F. Sergeev - 8, Junior Lieutenant V.I. Lastochkin - 4, Junior Lieutenant I. A. Degtyar - 4, Lieutenant M. I. Evdokimenko - 5. There was also a declared destroyed passenger car, an artillery battery and up to two enemy infantry companies, and one of the motorcyclists was captured.

Surprisingly, for such a fight Kolobanov did not receive the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. In September, 1941, the commander of the 1 tank regiment of the 1 tank division, D. D. Pogodin, all crew members of the tank Kolobanov were presented to the rank of Hero of the Soviet Union, this presentation was signed by the division commander V. I. Baranov. But for some reason, this decision was changed at the headquarters of the Leningrad Front. This change still defies a reasonable explanation and causes a lot of disputes and versions. Anyway, Kolobanov was presented to the Order of the Red Banner, and gunner A. M. Usov to the Order of Lenin. Perhaps the Lenfront command simply considered it impossible to assign the title of Hero to Kolobanov against the general background of major strategic failures, and Krasnogvardeisk was soon surrendered to the Germans. According to another version, in the Kolobanov case there was some information compromising him, something that prevented him from receiving the award. The truth, in any case, we will not know.

15 September 1941, Zinoviy Kolobanov was seriously wounded. This happened at night in the cemetery of the city of Pushkin, where the lieutenant’s tank was refueled with ammunition and fuel. Next to his HF, a German projectile exploded, a tanker was injured in the head and spine with splinters; in addition, Kolobanov received a contusion of the spinal cord and brain. At first he was treated at the Institute of Traumatology in Leningrad, but then he was evacuated and was treated in evacuation hospitals in Sverdlovsk before March 15. 1945 May 31, he was given the rank of captain.

Despite the serious injury and contusion, Kolobanov after the war again entered the service in the tank forces. Zinovy Kolobanov was in service until July 1958, after which he retired to the reserve already in the rank of lieutenant colonel. He worked and lived in the capital of Belarus. 8 died on August 1994 of the year in Minsk, buried there.

Today, a monument has been erected at the site of the famous battle of Soviet tankers on the outskirts of Gatchina. On the monument stands a heavy tank IS-2. Unfortunately, by the time the monument was erected, the same KV-1E tanks, on which Kolobanov fought, could no longer be found, so I had to use what was at hand. A sign appeared on a high pedestal, which says: “The tank crew under the command of Senior Lieutenant Z. G. Kolobanov destroyed 19 enemy tanks in the battle on August 1941, 22. The crew included: driver foreman Nikiforov N. I., gun commander senior sergeant Usov A. M., gunner-radio operator senior sergeant Kiselkov P. I., loading Red Army soldier N. F. Rodenkov.

I always admired this tank battle near Leningrad. good
I learned about it from a book that I read about 6-7 years ago. Tactically competent actions of Comrade TR and good coordination of all crews of the company, including the tank of the company commander, are the key to the success of this battle.
That's how sane people fight, and not "hurray" and go ahead.
By the way, from the same book I liked this expression:
"There is an impulse, but there is a maneuver. The impulse is when For the Motherland! For Stalin! (Note. In this case, For Hitler and Great Germany laughing ) A maneuver is when a well-camouflaged AT cannon in the bushes (approx. In this case, KV tanks) nip the impulse in the bud. " good laughing

And the KV-1 dinosaur is even more like than the T-34 (approx. Even despite all its shortcomings). For the initial period of the Second World War, he became a real hemorrhoids on the battlefield for the Wehrmacht (note, since not all had 88 mm anti-aircraft guns with them then laughing). And KV-1E is "finally tin" and "full PE" good laughing .

It is a pity that so unfair (IMHO) Zinovy Kolobanov cheated for this fight with a well-deserved reward.
Nevertheless, his personal qualities deserve deep respect, because it is known that he was a very modest person and considered it unbecoming to be a self-PR person.
It can be assumed that it is personally precious for him that people like him were able to defeat the enemy then, despite all his technical and tactical superiority. Poured as they say in full.
The best reward for a veteran is the memory of descendants among the common people, its value cannot be measured by any hardware.

Yes, and eight or eight did not always break through ...
The crew of the KV-1 tank near the town of Raseiniai (in Lithuania) in June 1941 during the day kept the campaign group (battle group) of the 6th Panzer Division of General F. Landgraf, equipped mainly with light Czech tanks Pz.35 (t). This battle was described by the commander of the 6-th motorized infantry brigade of the division E. Routh (commander of the campaign group "Raus"). One of the KV during the battle of June 24 turned to the left and took a position on the road parallel to the advance of the Campfeng group “Söckendorf” under the command of Lieutenant Colonel E. von Sackendorf, being behind the campfgroup Raus. The KV-1 tank stopped for a while the camper group Seckendorf, which was a little less than half the tank division. This episode became the basis for the legend that one KV stopped the entire 4 German tank group, Colonel General E. Gepner (as if half a division is not enough request ) The magazine of operations of the 11-th tank regiment of the 6-td reads as follows: “The bridgehead of the camp group Raus was retained. Until noon, as a reserve, the reinforced company and headquarters of the 65-th tank battalion were pulled back along the left route to the intersection of roads north-east of Raseinaya. In the meantime, the Russian heavy tank blocked the communications of the campaign group Raus. Because of this, communication with the Campus group Raus was interrupted for the whole afternoon and the following night. 8,8 Flak Battery was sent by the commander to fight this tank. But her actions were as unsuccessful as the 10,5-cm battery, which fired according to the instructions of a leading observer. In addition, the attempt of an attack group of sappers to undermine the tank failed. It was impossible to get close to the tank due to heavy machine gun fire. ” The lone HF in question was battling the Campend group Sackendorf. After a night raid by sappers who had just scratched the tank, the second time they were tackled with the help of an 88-mm anti-aircraft gun which was installed behind the tank. The group of tanks 35 (t) distracted KV with their movement, and the calculation of 8,8 cm FlaK made six hits to the tank but only three managed to break through the armor of the tank. However, the heroism and courage of the crew of the lone Soviet KV-1 tank impressed the enemy. It became obvious to German soldiers that Soviet tankers equipped with excellent military equipment would be a serious adversary and the war would be difficult and lengthy even with its catastrophic start. Dead unknown Soviet tankers were buried by the Germans with military honors.

I’ll add, after the anti-aircraft gun was shot, the German infantry surrounded the car, climbed onto the armor, and then the tank’s tower fluttered and began to turn, the Germans started to scatter at a loss, but one infantryman pushed a grenade into the hole and only after that the steel giant froze forever ....
Now I don’t remember the source, but, as I recall, of the 80 pages of memoirs for the entire war, 2,5 pages are devoted to this particular battle .. Regards ...

Germans, peacefully traveling to a picnic, and behind Kolobanov's tank in the dugout, special officers are thumping, who mined the tank so that it does not move out of position. The war was not a curiosity for the 28-year-old senior lieutenant Kolobanov. As part of the 20th heavy tank brigade as a company commander, he was able to participate in the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939-1940. The brigade in which he served was the first to reach the Mannerheim line, with his company at the cutting edge. It was then that Kolobanov burned for the first time in a tank. In a battle near Lake Vuoksa, he again pulled forward with his company, and again had to escape from a burning car. The third time it burned during a raid on Vyborg. On the night of March 12-13, 1940, a peace treaty was signed between the USSR and Finland. Learning about this, the soldiers of two previously opposing armies rushed to meet each other for "fraternization".

Unfortunately, this very “fraternization” cost Captain Kolobanov very dearly: he was demoted in rank and, having deprived of all awards, he was fired to the reserve.
With the start of World War II, Kolobanov was called up from the reserve to the 1st Panzer Division, which was created on the basis of the 20th Heavy Tank Brigade, in which he fought during the war with the Finns. Since he already had combat experience, Kolobanov was awarded the rank of senior lieutenant and appointed commander of a company of heavy KV tanks. True, I had to forget about the previous awards, I had to start all over again, from scratch.

The great feat of our tankers. They did a great job not only in their tank work, but since the division’s command did not bother to give the tank company neither reconnaissance squad, nor motorized platoon platoon, nor mortar platoon (which more than reveals our tactics of conducting tank battles of the beginning of the war and largely explains the gigantic losses tanks in cross-border battles), performed all the work alone for these. In vain, the staff didn’t give comrades of the Hero of the USSR

This battle has been known for a long time (as well as the battle at Rasenyay), there is also the film "Blockade" about it, in episode 2. On the Kolobanov side, the battle was carried out tactically competently, but the commander of the German tank battalion burst into ruin, and besides, he violated the regulations by not allocating a head outpost (a platoon is supposed to be) set 500 meters ahead. Reconnaissance, reconnaissance, and movement with the possibility of meeting with the enemy, required going in front of the battle formation, and not in a column.
Well, it's funny to compare the capabilities of KV with the "Czechs". And it is worth considering that 1 TD was one of the best in the Red Army. Yet people are fighting, not iron.
But about the invulnerability of HF read Rokossovsky KK (memories of the command of the MK in June 1941).

I read a book about Nikolai Dukhov. There are memories of KV1 tank testers who were sent directly from the factory to the Finnish war. They write that they pounded on the armor, like peas in a bowl, but the tank withstood it. Moreover, the damaged tanks were closed, so that they could be dragged away for repair.

What can I say - a great tank for 40-41 years ... But this does not reduce the merit of the crew.

Perhaps this story will someday wait for its scriptwriter and director as well as the film about the death match of the Dynamo team in Kiev. The script was written, if I'm not mistaken, in '47, and the film was shot 15 years later, which is called a miracle. In addition, there is also a reliable episode of the 41st year worthy of a full-fledged film - this is the battle of the T-28 in Minsk. It cannot be said that nothing was filmed on this topic about that period. There is a film "Tank Klim Voroshilov 2", although the story is apparently invented from beginning to end, but perhaps the motives of real events were taken into account by the authors.

Thank you for watching the video with pleasure than that Fairy ... It's a shame that Kolobanov who accomplished such a feat passed away without receiving his true award, the award which he was not awarded, but which he deserved, namely, the title of Hero of the Soviet Union ... well if for the 70th anniversary of Victory V.V. Putin eliminated the injustice, awarded Kolobanov the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.

"Frightened German crews jumped out of the burning and wrecked cars and rushed in fear between them. Many were killed by machine-gun fire from a Soviet tank."
If the tank was in a caponier, how did the crew fire from a machine gun? Did they have KPVT on the tower?

The Wiki states that "The tanks of the first issues were equipped with an L-11 gun of 76,2 mm caliber ... Interestingly, the original project also included a 45-mm 20K cannon paired with it ... But already on a prototype aimed at Karelian isthmus, the 45-mm cannon was removed and a DT-29 machine gun was installed in its place. "
But in the photographs I can’t find a machine gun coaxial with a cannon.

Well, if you strictly approach the matter, then it can be assumed that one of the crew members could be outside the tank with the machine gun removed and this is quite logical under those conditions, the external surveillance provided an additional opportunity not to miss the enemy’s attempt to get to the tank by infantry forces.

here on the site, about two or three years ago, there was already an article about Kolobanov’s battle more expanded, the tanks were with a few infantry cover, so it is quite possible that the infantrymen fired from the machine gun

About the feat of Art. Lieutenant Z. Kolobanov, I published in the newspaper of the Leningrad region and in the magazine "VO" stories "Fight to the death, but survive." So Art. Lieutenant Z. Kolobanov and carried out the order of the division commander. During this battle there was also a tank ram. When the gun jammed and the driver-mechanic, to save Kolobanov's tank, was rammed by a fascist tank that was not stuck in a swamp.
The commentary by Alexander (I write in Russian) correctly provides information why Kolobanov was mobilized in 1941 to Baranov’s division not as a captain, but as an old man. They could not forgive him. Therefore, the title of Hero of the Soviet Union was not awarded.
After the publication of my stories, the country's public was ready to raise funds for a feature film. But there were no enthusiasts who would lead the process. Patriots try to do this, this is a folk film. I have the honor.

It is necessary to educate young people on such examples of heroism, and not on the liberal "values" imposed on our youth by pro-Westerners.

I wonder how many years have passed, but it is still not known for certain with whom Kolobanov's company was at war - with the 6th TD where there were predominantly one "Czech" Pz-35t, with the 8th TD where there were also enough "Czechs" but the next model Pz -38t, or all the same with the 1st TD where there were German panzers, I read various versions, but no one can document theirs. Based on everything that I read, I am inclined to believe that the Kolobanovites fought not with the "Czechs" of the 6th TD of the Wehrmacht, but with the panzers of the 1st TD

In fact, the commanders of tank companies of the times of the Great Patriotic War are generally heroes almost without exception, regardless of any awards there. And unfortunately in most cases posthumously. The usual crew, if the tank is damaged or broken, goes for a new tank or for repairs. Each time a company commander from a wrecked tank should change to a new tank until he is alive or seriously injured. As a result, there are two options, either burn up, or go to increase. Iron people.
