Gunsmiths of Dagestan

24
Once, Dagestan was actually a production center. weapons. In the old days, the mountain republic was called the "smithy of weapons" of the Caucasus. Now everything has changed a lot, the master has not yet been translated, but the weapon craft is on the verge of extinction.

I arrived in Makhachkala one day later than the main film crew, and could not get acquainted in detail with the work of the gunsmith, who, according to the plan, spent the night. We drove in for the filmmakers early in the morning, and in 10 minutes I ran around the workshop and took some photos. Then, in different villages, I met several people who are somehow connected with the weapons business and were shooting something. Of course, a certain mix came out, but still, quite interesting, worthy of a deeper and more detailed study. Next.

Before you make another sword or a saber, first sketches are drawn, the form and patterns are worked out, up to a millimeter. Only then begins work with the metal.

1 Wall with samples of different weapons in the workshop.

2 Father has several sons. Since childhood, they adopt the skill, as they say from grandfather to father, from father to son. But the trend today is that children are increasingly looking at the TV or iPhone and the delights of sitting behind the machine already attract few people. Masters do not earn much money.

3 Dagger.

4 In one aul, we were shown a real quaden sword. A fragment of this sword, decorated with cloisonne enamel on the title photo of the post.

5 Cane with a "secret"

6 This is the "secret" - will not find it.

7 Decoration scabbard pattern. Hellishly painstaking and time-consuming work.

8 What would be clearly seen, sfotkal large one wooden vase which is also decorated with a wire pattern. Here you can see that the whole pattern is a thin wire hammered into a tree.

9 And here is another master making pistols and shotguns. In the photo, he solders the handle to the gun.

10 That’s such a cool trick then. Very beautiful thing.

11 At first I thought it was a sham, but no. It has a working mechanism, and there is a flint, from which a spark is cut.

12 Powder is stored here.

13 And another exhibit - a gun!

Being in Dagestan, we looked into the city of Kizlyar. For half an hour we were allowed to see the production of knives in modern workshops. This is how a modern factory works, practically without manual labor, stamping. True, Kizlyar has individual models, single-piece, or as they say, designer ones, to which a lot of human effort and talent is attached. But this again, piece goods. Anyway...

14 Machine cross stitch according to a given program) Sandblasting cuts 5 mm steel like scissors paper, impressive.

15 Stacks of blanks of which then make a bunch of knives. The pun turned out)

16 People work at the machines, not like their colleagues in their workshops.

17 Here in this workshop we met a real blacksmith. His products are valued several times more expensive.

18 And I stood next to a sleeveless T-shirt ...

19 Now a woman is involved in this type of work. The ornaments on the blades.

22 on the finished knives, write with the laser the name of the product, the logo, and there may be some kind of drawing that is incorporated by the program.

The classroom book is about the Caucasus and about the Russians. And about the war, and about life, and about weapons. The book of the level of the Quiet Don. I’ve read as a student. It helps to understand who is who.

Under the USSR, many masters of Dagestan worked without problems and created masterpieces that were highly valued on the international market. Now everyone is tormented by himself and makes a demand if the market would be bought.

Do you think that a handicraftsman cannot make a masterpiece? You are mistaken.

Interesting - from which tree the cane in the photo? I would be limping with such a handicraft cane across Moscow laughing The tip only needs some kind of brass down, or even better, removable - for the winter to a pointed one, and in the summer with a soft sole - do not knock and also the handle is made of bone, but not too pretentious - taking into account the possibility of convenient use of the "insert".

Apricot and dogwood are mainly processed there. They are viscous, well suited for inlay, and grow there in sufficient quantities.

The cane is too elaborate, better a blade in an umbrella. The umbrella is ordinary. Where else to buy this?

For a policeman, after all, "beautiful" is not an argument!

You should have militiamen "nakhromalibs" for such a "prop". I myself have been walking with a "third leg" for a long time, so for the police it is like "Alyarm!", They will stop, or even inspect. Now I'm used to it, I used to be out of hand.

This is the modern knife industry - a stream! It's a pity. Although, in truth, in the Caucasus before, "they were stamping - let's go!" However, as elsewhere. I saw an old "family" dagger of the Nokhchi, from the XNUMXth century - nonsense, as it was made of a scythe. But the relic, from the ancestors, I respect this business. I saw a Cossack tooth, about the same time, the same nonsense-stamping. Although it seems like Chrysostom.

You won’t make a really good knife out of such stamping. A real knife can only be forged when the master smith literally feels the masterpiece that comes out of his hands. And so the Caucasian weapon was always liked by its laconic simplicity, but not to the detriment of efficiency. After all, even a Cossack checker was originally a purely mountain weapon and was taken over by the Terts and Kuban during the fighting in the North Caucasus. Where there has never been peace, even in formally peaceful times. And the best indicator of the quality and effectiveness of your weapon is when your enemy takes over it. Something like this.
      I have the honor.

I gave my child a Kizlyar "Korshun" (sold for a ruble), when he served an urgent service in the exploration of a mountain bigada, he says it should be in intelligence, but there is no regular multifunctional knife, now they seem to want to introduce it into the regular one.

By the way, the reliability of fixation was one of the main requirements for a knife.

With pleasure I always look at museums in the Caucasus, Iranian, Arab, Uzbek weapons. Horror, how much labor and love is invested in them!
We, Kazakhs, weapons (even museum) looks very simple, without any frills. The steppe residents did not bother, the main thing for them is that the weapon be functional. But still, how beautiful the weapons of the settled eastern peoples are! Even a simple kitchen knife, a hardworking Uzbek or Tajik will make with patterns, with a complex bright patch handle, decorate the scabbard! It all makes me feel admirable.
