Beginning of the Russian-Belarusian exercises "Shield of the Union-2011"
The purpose of the exercise is to improve the interaction of the Russian and Belarusian soldiers in the regional group of forces in solving the tasks of ensuring the security of the Union State, ITAR-TASS reports.
In the Western Military District, at the Gorokhovetsky training ground, the Russian and Belarusian air defense units armed with the Tunguska, Strela-10 and Igla MANPADS will fire targets that simulate helicopters and low-flying aircraft. They will be used as targets. helicopter ground-based dummies, light mines, as well as the upgraded Phalang-M anti-tank guided missile designed to simulate a maneuvering air target. Targets also mimic personnel, firing points and times personal samples of equipment and weapons.
The air defense units of the Western Military District and the Belarusian military will also conduct military firing at the Ashuluk and Kapustin Yar ranges in the Astrakhan region. In particular, at the Kapustin Yar test site, military personnel will carry out live firing at small-sized high-altitude and low-flying air targets from the Buk-M2 and C-300 anti-aircraft missile systems.
During the firing, the Saman aerial targets will be used, simulating tactical aircraft aviation and cruise missiles. The conditions for firing at aerial targets will be as close as possible to combat ones, for the detection, capture and destruction will be given the minimum time. The missile-simulating missiles reproduce various types of air attack weapons, which is an essential element in the performance of tasks of monitoring the air situation, searching for and detecting air targets with their subsequent destruction.
