Russian Navy after 2020: Possible ways to upgrade

40
All countries with access to the sea need powerful and modern naval forces, the potential of which is sufficient to fulfill the tasks. In the case of large and powerful states, whose foreign policy and diplomatic activity has its own characteristics, this translates into the need to build a large and powerful fleetcapable of operating in different regions of the world and at a great distance from the bases. For several decades, Russia has been trying to build its own powerful ocean fleet, but for various reasons, such projects have not yet led to the expected result.

Recall attempts to build a so-called. The “Grand Fleet” began at the end of the last century. Adopted in 1881, the program led to certain results, but a significant part of the new ships died during the Russian-Japanese war. Then they returned to the promising idea in the late twenties, but the program was not implemented again, this time because of the impending World War II. In the postwar period, the USSR was able to build a numerous fleet, which has a large number of ships and submarines of various classes and types. This allowed for the construction of naval presence in different regions, but the reduction in the eighties and nineties led to a sharp deterioration of the situation and a gradual decrease in capacity of the Navy.

Currently, the Ministry of Defense and Industry are implementing the State Armaments Program, calculated up to 2020. In addition, the military and industrialists are now forming a new, similar plan that will be implemented from 2016 to 2025 years. In both programs, special attention should be paid to updating the navy. After a long period, during which the fleet did not receive sufficient funding and was constantly reduced, the time came when it became possible to recover losses and lost potential.

We should not forget that the construction and commissioning of new ships will be carried out in parallel with the decommissioning and disposal of obsolete equipment. This factor additionally makes it difficult to update the Navy, since the industry will have to build ships, boats and submarines in an amount sufficient for an equivalent replacement of the equipment to be withdrawn and to increase the fleet's capabilities. Consider plans for updating in the medium term and the main difficulties associated with them.

In the context of the further development of the Russian surface fleet, two projects are most often mentioned: the construction of amphibious ships of the type Mistral and the appearance of a new domestic aircraft carrier. Prospects for the purchase of landing ships from France, it seems, have already been determined. The first two ships became the subject of a lengthy dispute, which is why their further fate is questionable. Nevertheless, there is every reason to believe that the planned purchase of two more Mistrals does not take place due to the unreliability of the supplier represented by France.

Building a new aircraft carrier for the Russian Navy is a more interesting issue. Even during the previous Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov announced that in the current state program of armaments-2020 not provided any costs for the construction of aircraft carriers. Thus, in the best case, the construction of an aircraft carrier starts no earlier than 2020 of the year. In view of such remote periods it can be assumed that such plans are still in the preliminary stages of discussion.

The actions and statements of some shipbuilding organizations add fuel to the discussions. Over the past few years, domestic shipbuilders have repeatedly demonstrated their projects of a promising aircraft carrier for the Russian fleet. In addition, rumors have been circulating for a long time about the future creation of a promising carrier-based fighter based on the T-50 aircraft (the PAK FA program). For obvious reasons, official information regarding the construction of a new aircraft carrier has not yet appeared, which, however, does not prevent specialists and amateurs of military affairs from actively discussing a promising project.

In the interests of the Russian Navy, it is planned to repair and upgrade heavy nuclear missile cruisers of the 1144 Orlan project. At the moment, only one ship of this project remains in service - the flagship of the Northern Fleet, Peter the Great. The remaining cruisers for various reasons were withdrawn in reserve. A few years ago it became known about the planned upgrading at least one of the "eagles". First to repair and upgrade went cruiser "Admiral Nakhimov". Last year he was transferred to Sevmash plant, since last fall the ship has been in the bulk basin of the enterprise.

Before 2018, it is planned to replace many systems and equip the ship with new weapons. According to some reports, "Admiral Nakhimov" will receive new weapons. So, for the attack of surface and ground targets, he will use the Caliber missile system, which will replace the Granit П-700 system. It is planned to use other weapons and systems of new types.

Earlier it was reported that after the cruiser “Admiral Nakhimov” the ship “Peter the Great” would be sent for repair and modernization. The further fate of "Admiral Lazarev" is still unknown. The lead ship of the project, the Kirov, is likely to be disposed of due to the impossibility of a complete repair of damaged units.

The 1164 “Atlant” missile cruisers are also updated. The ship "Marshal Ustinov" is under repair and this year should go to the test. Planned repair and modernization of the Guards missile cruiser "Moscow", which is the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet. It is planned to replace the weapons and some onboard systems. In the future, it is also possible to upgrade the third Atlant-type cruiser. The flagship of the Pacific Fleet, the cruiser Varyag, was undergoing repairs not so long ago, due to which the timing of its further update is still unknown.

According to some reports, by the end of this decade, the modernization of large anti-submarine ships of the 1155 and 1155.1 projects can begin. As with the Orlans, upgrading these BODs may involve dismantling some of the existing systems and installing new ones. In particular, it is possible to change weapons complex, which will include the latest developments in this field. Navy Command has not yet spoken about his plans for the modernization of the BOD and the 1155 1155.1 projects, which is why so far it appears only in the form of rumors.

In the future, the Russian navy will be forced to write off a certain number of old ships, including those of the first rank, no longer fit for service. For example, in 2015, it is planned to write off the large anti-submarine ship "Kerch" (project 1134B). Last year, this ship underwent repairs and later had to become the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet for a while, replacing the Moskva ship under repair. However, in November last year in several feed compartments "Kerch" there was a fire. A special commission examined the ship and decided that its restoration was not appropriate.

The program of development of the surface fleet occupy a special place new corvettes (patrol near sea zone) project 20380 / 20385 and frigates (patrol far sea zone) 22350 project. The fleet wants to get a total of 15 frigates of the 22350 project and up to 18-20 of the corvettes "20380". It should be noted, the serial construction of patrol vessels has already been deployed and has some success. So, four corvettes of the 20380 project are currently serving in the Baltic Fleet. In the future frigates and corvettes new projects will be distributed among all Russian fleets.

Since the end of the last decade, Russian specialists have been working on a project for a promising destroyer with the code designation Leader. At 2014, the start of development work was planned for the year, and the construction of the lead ship should start as early as 2016. In view of the possible difficulties that may occur during the construction phase, as well as follow-up tests and to correct deficiencies can be assumed that the service of the new ship will begin no earlier than the end of the decade.

It is known about the development of two variants of the new project. The Navy will be offered ships with nuclear and gas turbine power plants. The final selection of these units will be for the military. Characteristics and equipment of promising destroyers, for obvious reasons, have not yet been announced. In this regard, there are the most daring assumptions. There is an opinion that the “Leader” ships as the main strike means will receive not only the “Caliber” missile system, but also some promising hypersonic missile. Also, the ships can get the ship's anti-aircraft version of the S-500.

The current state armament program provides funding for the development of a new project, and the construction costs of the “Leaders” will be included in the next such plan. According to some reports, the Russian Navy can order up to 10-12 destroyers of a new type. Naturally, all the available information about the project "Leader" yet are tentative, since the ship requirements may change, some stages of the project may be delayed, and the command of the fleet can adjust their plans.

Over the past years, active construction of new submarines, which will serve in the Northern, Pacific and Black Sea fleets, has been conducted. Such programs and projects are of particular importance for the development of the Navy and the security of the country, since it is precisely submarines that are one of the elements of strategic nuclear forces. At the moment, the naval component of the nuclear triad consisting of submarine 667BDR "Kalmar" projects 667BDRM "Dolphin" and 955 "Northwind".

After long operation and problems of the past decades, only three Kalmar submarines and six Dolphins remained in the ranks. In recent years, the construction and testing of the head submarine of the 955 project was completed, which opened the way for new ships of this type. At the moment, the Russian Navy has three "Boreas", the last of which was transferred in December last year.

The prospects of the submarines of the 667BDR project are simple and clear: approximately by the end of the decade they should be written off and sent for recycling. The number of drill submarines of the 667BDRM project will also constantly decrease, but until a certain time these ships will remain the basis of the naval component of the nuclear triad. In the future, the fleet should receive at least eight "Boreev", which are intended to replace the old types of submarines.

Until 2020, it is planned to build a series of eight submarines of the 955 and 955А projects. Three ships have already been transferred to the fleet, three more are at different stages of construction. A simple calculation shows that the planned number of submarines of the new type will allow keeping the number of deployed ballistic missiles of submarines at the existing level. Often, an assumption is made about the possible continuation of the construction of "Boreev". To enhance the naval component of strategic nuclear forces, 2-4 submarines of this type can be built. Nevertheless, while about such plans is unknown. Probably, the question of continuing the construction of submarines of the 955 / 955А project will be decided only when preparing a new state armaments program, calculated up to 2025.

To replace existing nuclear submarines with cruise missiles (SSGN) and nuclear submarines torpedo (fee) is being offered only one submarine project. In the foreseeable future, submarines of the 885 "Ash" project should become one of the main underwater "hunters" in the Russian Navy. The armament of these submarines consists of torpedoes, mines and guided missiles. Thus, in terms of the composition of the “Ash” percussion means, the SSGN of the 949A project corresponds to a certain extent. In addition, the presence of torpedoes allows you to replace existing PLAT projects 945, 945A and 971. Used in "Irtish Amphora» 885 project hydroacoustic station should provide high detection performance both surface and underwater targets. This feature of the new SSGNs, in combination with the existing weapons, should lead to a significant increase in their effectiveness in comparison with other types of submarines.

The Russian Navy currently has two dozen nuclear submarines with torpedo and rocket armament. At the same time, the Defense Ministry plans to build only eight “Ash trees”. The lead ship of the project, Severodvinsk, has been serving in the Northern Fleet since last year. All new submarines are built on the updated project 885M. Construction of a planned series to be completed by 2018-20 years.

Known information about the number of available and planned for the construction of submarines suggests that the new "Ash" will not have to completely replace the existing submarines. Their task is to strengthen the submarine grouping of the navy in the short and medium term, as well as to ensure the preservation of the potential of the fleet after writing off obsolete submarines.

Command plans for the further construction of the Yaseni are not fully understood. A few years ago it stated that until 2020 the Navy can not get 8, 10 and new submarines, but construction was approved just 8 submarines. Perhaps, after 2020, the construction of the 885 submarines will continue. We can not exclude the possibility of the appearance of a new upgraded version of the project. In addition, we are aware of the start of work on a new project of the fifth-generation multipurpose nuclear submarine.

Now and in the future it is planned to update the grouping of non-nuclear submarines. Thus, in the interests of the Black Sea Fleet, six diesel-electric submarines of the Varshavyanka 636.3 project are being built. The first two submarines have already been transferred to the fleet, the delivery of the third and fourth is scheduled for this year.

High hopes are pinned on the updated version of the 677 “Lada” project, in which it is supposed to use a promising air-independent power plant. Such equipment will significantly improve the fighting qualities of non-nuclear submarines due to the absence of the need for regular ascent to recharge the batteries. However, the exact dates for the start of construction of submarines with such power plants remain unknown. Probably, such a ship will appear in the Russian Navy only in the next decade.

Against the background of previous decades, the current plans of the Russian Ministry of Defense regarding the development of the navy look more than bold and ambitious. Nevertheless, the funding allocated within the framework of the state armament program allows you to invest in the development and construction of a new weapons and equipment, including ships and submarines. It is quite clear that the implementation of the current plans will be associated with a lot of various difficulties. However, the existing state of the material part of the Navy faces are so serious problems in the future, against the background of the expected difficulty of the state program does not seem a reason for refusal of further work.

Spraying forces to create an ocean fleet is probably not as relevant as strengthening the littoral and marine concept of the fleet by not allowing the enemy to communicate
The need to protect nuclear submarines with nuclear missiles has not been canceled, and it follows that the ocean fleet is needed to ensure the stability of the triad component.
About 50 corvettes are needed to protect the coastal zone of the Russian Federation
and about the same number of diesel submarines
more than 20 frigates are needed to cover marine areas
But this is the minimum required amount in reality, you need 2 times more in order to ensure permanent protection of communication

Projecting ... To understand the unrealizability of these plans, just go to the store ... well, or change the oil in the car ... well, or go to the pharmacy ...
But it’s not customary for us to look to the future with pessimism ... the glass is half full ... and the bug smells like brandy ... So down with despondency ... down with despondency ... everyone ...

Anyone who has both developed hemispheres of the brain will understand that an increase in prices for "pelmeni" is accompanied by an increase in absolutely all prices, and the cost of the fleet is scheduled for many years ahead and it is not provided that product X worth 100 thousand rubles will cost 300 thousand rubles ... And even now the Ministry of Defense is scratching their heads on what to put an end to, and what to finance to the end. Therefore, speaking today about yesterday's plans, which do not correspond to the harsh reality, is outright projection.
PS: BOD Kerch is the most striking example ...

Sorry, but this is not the logic.
If the price of dumplings leads to an increase in ALL prices, then from this a priori it follows that ... prices are rising :))) And with them the company’s revenue and costs increase, but also the profit :))) And once the profit rises - taxes are also rising. And with them, the very MO budget that you are writing about is growing.
Everything is not simple here, and the crisis is shibanet for us and the chibanet is on the MO, but not everything is as catastrophic as it seems at first glance

Remark. Cyril conducted a campaign of voiced facts on the prospects shipbuilding programs. The topic is stated as Navy prospects - and this is the Fleet Aviation (deck, PLO, MRA, reconnaissance), this is the MP - landing and landing equipment, BMP / BMD, etc., this is BRAV with its lotions.
Essentially. There was a figure for the construction program of the "Leader" in the amount of 16 units. 6 each for the Northern Fleet and Pacific Fleet, and 2 units each for the Black Sea Fleet and BF. It is precisely this structure of the combat employment of the naval forces that is laid down now. I wish there was enough money to carry it out.
The CIA issued that in 2015 alone the Russians are planning to lay down 5 nuclear submarines. However, now all forces are thrown into the construction of 955. Given that 885 is more expensive than Borya, it is doubtful whether it is possible to finance both projects simultaneously.
The author differs somewhat in his assessments of the prospects for the construction of a nuclear submarine pr 677. Rubin said that he finished the VNEU and was ready to build Kalina in 2016.
For the rest, it is a quite competent summary report on the intentions of the USC for the construction of the naval ship structure. But in order to know exactly what we will have, we need to look at the tracing of the Navy's budget. If money is not allocated for AVU, then no matter how much we say "Halva", the mouth will not be sweeter. Sincerely.

16 units - this is most likely in the future of the existing marine strategy.
After the successful implementation of the plan (God forbid it will be completed), I believe that they will continue to build.
Nothing said about modularity. Does the "leader" include this quality?
It seemed like there was infa that one trial ship was being built to test "modularity" .. And that was the end of the rumor. Have you heard anything about this?

Those. Is it worth building 667 or is VNEU needed?
        As questions arise.
1.pr 667 (667BDRM) have not been built since 1992 of the year. It is planned to begin their withdrawal from the combat-ready from the 2019 year (after repair, the service life is extended from 25 to 35 years) to 2025 years. Now there are 7 units: 5 in service, 2 in repair. All on the SF.
        2. VNEU - are needed. In March 2014, the Navy Commander Admiral V.V. Chirkov literally said the following: "At present, a fifth generation non-nuclear submarine, the Kalina project, is being designed, which will be equipped with an air-independent power plant." http://ria.ru/defense_safety
        3. On pr.677 "Lada". Series of 4 pcs. A unified control system will be developed at St. Petersburg (2nd Kronstadt -2017, 3rd Sevastopol - end of 2018, 4th - signing a contract in 2015, transfer to the fleet - 2019). There was information that large-capacity lithium-ion batteries will be installed on them, which will significantly increase their combat capabilities.
"In the process of creating the Lada submarine, research institutes and enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex have carried out more than two hundred research and development works, which resulted in the creation of modern efficient small-sized, low-noise, with minimal energy consumption, electronic weapon systems, ship samples. equipment and new high-precision weapons.Distinguishing features of the Project 677 submarine in comparison with the previous generation submarines are: the ability to conduct salvo rocket fire at sea targets; increased electronic weapons capabilities in comparison with the project 877 submarine; the presence of an integrated automated control system for the ship, its combat, technical means and weapons; the presence of a new modern hydroacoustic complex with a quasi-conformal noise-direction finding antenna of a large area, capable of detecting low-noise targets at large distances; the presence of non-penetrating hull of retractable devices (except for the commander's periscope); the presence of a new generation anti-sonar hull ". Correctly the CIA issued: this year at least 5 nuclear submarines will indeed be laid down. Only boats of the project 955A, 885M and possibly 1 09851 will be laid down at least. There is an assumption that construction of the Irbis will be resumed in Komsomolsk-on Amur along with the modernization of the Kashalot for India. There is also information that the lead nuclear submarine of the new project, level 671RTM, may be laid. That is, simplified and cheap. It is also already known for sure that 1 boat of Project 677 will be laid and, possibly, 1-2 diesel boats according to the new project. As a result, the guaranteed bookmarks for this year are 5 nuclear and 1 diesel submarines. In addition to this, another 1-2 nuclear and 1-2 diesel boats can be laid down. In 2016 there should be a break with bookmarks, because there will be no slipways. Perhaps 2-3 diesel boats will be laid to replace the launched ones. And in 2017, we can expect the laying of 10 diesel boats and another 5 nuclear submarines.

As for "Leader" - it is unlikely that it will be mortgaged until 2018. This is my personal opinion based on the fact that our industry is not even ready for the restoration of all Project 1144 cruisers. And the "Leader" will be more complicated in design. Therefore, it has not yet been laid. They should have made a bookmark back in 2012, but we realized that the industry does not even pull out repairs of 1144. Therefore, before the repairs of all 4 cruisers 1144 are completed, you should not wait for the Leaders to bookmark.

And the aircraft carrier may enter service next year. To replace Belokamenka, an oil storage facility was built on the shore. As soon as it is built, a huge corps will be vacated, much larger than "Kuznetsov" or "Nimitz". The tonnage of that supertanker is 188000 brt. It is almost 2 times larger than the first Nimitz with a tonnage of 90000 tons. The last Nimitz have 102000 tons.

Denis, everything is correct ... only the reason is more prosaic. No filling. The excuse is as simple as a three-line: we must first work out all new solutions and weapons on 22350 and only then put it on EV. But something I didn’t hear that the “Admiral” was accepted into the Navy, everything at the GKHI toils. Apparently, he cannot digest new technical solutions. IMHO.

Decisions are being worked out on rebuildings 1144. "Leader" should actually be a nuclear-powered missile cruiser, not a destroyer. And with the restoration of our 1144 grandiose problems. 22350 is not atomic. And the "Leader" will be atomic. And it is impossible to work out a lot of stuffing for "Leader" at 22350. For example, new nuclear reactors and steam turbines with turbine generators. It is impossible to work them out even on "Nakhimov", because they are simply not in metal yet. Perhaps the power plant for the "Leader" will be installed on the "Frunze" and "Kirov". Because "Peter" has its own normal, and "Nakhimov" is already under repair. Plus the newest air defense system "Fortress". He also does not get to "Nakhimov". Therefore, it will go to work on the "Kirov" and "Frunze". And it may well be that "Frunze" will be repaired, but "Fortress" will not be ready yet. The same newest heavy anti-ship missile is also just under construction. It will only be adopted next year. Therefore, it also does not get to "Nakhimov". True, it can be run in on new submarines, but it will also have to be done on a cruiser. And this is either "Frunze" or "Kirov", or more likely both. The new 152-mm gun mount is also not ready for service for the Leader. Because it will have to be put on either "Kirov" or "Frunze". And so on. This is complete nonsense that "Kirov" will be cut. It has a high percentage of rejection, but for the Leader project just a ship is needed, which is not a pity to cut, in order to replace the old one with a new one. Kirov's reactors are blocked, so there will be new ones for the Leader. The acoustics have been screwed up - so the "Leader" will have its own.

It’s hard to understand what the article is about, like the entire Navy’s shipbuilding program, except for one of its items on the marine component of the nuclear deterrence forces and forces intended for its deployment. It seems that the country's leadership does not have a clear understanding of what the fleet will face and who the enemy is in opposing sea.

Well, who is the opponent so it is clear. Plus there is also a friend who is not very reliable, and you also need to keep an eye on him.
Perhaps you need a project of a small, relatively inexpensive, but effective nuclear submarine type pr.905. And the number one task should be the task of destroying destroyers with missile defense. It is necessary that the enemy could not neutralize our strategic missile forces and did not even think about it.

On the issue of your awareness of the organization of training for the US Navy The initial training of US Navy officers, which provides the primary officer rank “Ensign,” is carried out in the following educational institutions: the naval school (Annapolis), in the courses of non-military training of officers in civilian universities and in officer candidate schools. Students for educational institutions, where officers are trained, are selected by the Main Directorate of the Navy Headquarters staff, as well as preliminary and special selection commissions, which, after a thorough study of the candidates, compile and publish the final list of selected individuals for study. The number of officers sent annually for training, as a rule, does not exceed 6-8%. number of comers.

After the assignment of the rank of “lieutenant”, US Navy officers are sent to six-month advanced training courses in specialized schools of surface, submarine forces and naval aviation, where they receive the training necessary for serving in command and staff posts.

Before receiving the military rank of “Commander”, officers undergo training at command and staff courses at the Naval College (existed since 1950). The number of students attending the courses is variable. In 1973, for example, there were 220 of them, including 1C officers of the ground forces. Together with the study of the compulsory program, officers can take a course in socio-political disciplines, developed jointly with the University. J. Washington. The most promising and carefully selected officers are sent to the command post courses to prepare for command of the ships and naval formations, as well as to conduct military scientific work. The duration of the courses is one year.

Before being awarded the title of Captain, naval officers are trained at a naval college, which was founded in 1884. There they study military operations at sea, the actions of the Navy as part of other types of armed forces, the prospects for the development of the Navy, and other issues. The duration of college is one year, the annual recruitment of 160 people.

The training of senior officers (admirals) is carried out at the national military college, industrial college and staff college of the armed forces. The term of study in each of them is one year.

To date, there is no more effective weapon than nuclear submarines. But this does not mean that it will last forever ... Therefore, the main direction of this and the next decade can offer a priority for the development of the submarine fleet.
The surface fleet is quite vulnerable. Therefore, it is necessary to build strike groups, balanced from the point of view of defense capabilities, composed of ships for various purposes. First of all, you need the number of ships of the 2nd rank (frigates and corvettes), with the maximum increase in their capabilities. To ensure the stability of the group, its composition should also include destroyers and a cruiser. The cruiser must cement the defenses and provide abundant strike capabilities. In the coastal zone, the group can be saturated with smaller units, for example, boats.
An aircraft carrier similar to the classic Nimitz is not needed, because outdated. A fundamentally different type of aircraft carrier is needed. For example, a composite of modules, each of which is an ekranoplane - a carrier of an aircraft, including large bombers. The ekranoplan can separate from the matrix, accelerate and launch or take on board. Go back to the matrix and build into it. Lego). In case of an attack, it is divided into modules and distributed by KVM.

Yes, no ... I forgot to add that these modules, ekranoplanes, with bombers in the womb, in addition to accelerating to a speed of ~ 400 km / h to launch or receive the board directly by hovering over the module with an oncoming flow (there is no limit on the size of the board: even Ruslan ), they can also, having thrown off their speed, go under water when the board disappears in the womb and the hull is compacted. tongue and technologies are the most common, for example, by the principle of docking a spacecraft to a station.

I liked the article because everything was written without the beauty and kooky. My opinion is that the development of the fleet should take into account the military doctrine and the economic situation in the state. If we consider the marine theater of operations, then, as before, the main fleets remain the North and the Pacific. The Northern Fleet, in my opinion, is slightly inferior to the Pacific Fleet in terms of basing and operational tactical use, having jumped out of the corner it is necessary to immediately force the Faroe position or the Danish Strait, and this is a rather problematic task. The deployment of the Pacific Fleet covers the Kuril ridge. That is, based on the existing, being repaired and under construction ships, it is quite possible to create a KUG, which should include at least two cruisers, pr.1144, a couple of BOD pr.1155, three or four frigates, pr.22350, a couple of submarines, pr.885 . KUG in such a composition can both repel aggression and punish the aggressor.

The submarines of the Northern Fleet can surface under the ice and use ballistic missiles through the North Pole immediately across Canada-USA. There is no need to "force the Faroe position or the Danish Strait". It is in the stealth and advantage of the Northern Fleet. See the movie "K-19" for an illustration.

You are wrong about the deployment of the fleet from the Sea of Okhotsk there are ice. Long winters with severe frosts lead to severe cooling of the sea surface, accompanied by intense ice formation in almost all areas of the sea. The ice of the Sea of Okhotsk is exclusively of local origin. There are both fixed ice and floating ice, which are the most common form of sea ice. In general, by the severity of ice conditions, the Sea of Okhotsk is comparable to the Arctic seas. The average ice age in the northwestern part of the sea is 260 days, in the northern regions and off the coast of Fr. Sakhalin - 190-200, and in the south - 110-120 days a year. In the most severe winters, the ice cover occupies up to 99% of the total area of the sea, and in mild - 65%. The maximum duration of the ice period reaches 290 days. Ice formation usually begins in November in the northwestern part of the sea, and in places of significant water desalination in October. The ice cover gradually spreads south along the west and east coasts and appears in the open part of the sea. In December, continuous motionless landfast ice is formed in bays and bays. In January and February, ice fields occupy the entire northwestern and middle parts of the sea. Drifting ice reaches great cohesion and under the influence of currents and winds is subjected to strong compression and hummocking. In the open part of the sea there is never continuous solid ice. The greatest distribution to the south, southeast, ice is in February and March. At this time, they are found everywhere. The eastern and western halves of the central part of the Sea of Okhotsk sharply differ both in the duration of the ice period and in the nature of the ice situation. For a long period from April to June, the destruction and melting of the ice cover occurs. In the northwestern part of the sea, ice persists until July. The southern coast of Kamchatka, the central and northern Kuril Islands are characterized by low ice cover and significantly shorter ice life. However, in severe winters, drifting ice can cling to these islands and clog individual straits. The thickness of ice (excluding hummocking) in coastal and shallow areas in December-January reaches 40-50 cm, in the hall. Shelikhov and off the coast of Kamchatka - 30-40 cm, in the open sea (in the average severity of winter) - 40-70 cm. The maximum ice thicknesses (90-160 cm) are observed in severe winters in the Sakhalin Gulf and in the north of the sea -tail from metro Elizabeth (northern Sakhalin). The height of hummocks in the open sea does not exceed 1 m, and in individual bays - 1,5-3,0 m. The statistical characteristics of the distribution over the water area and the variability of various parameters of the ice cover are relatively well studied on the basis of a long-term series of observations and are described in detail in specialized literature.

Sergey, in general, you correctly assess the situation. But, with your permission, two remarks.
      1. The Northern Fleet is an operational STRATEGIC association (based on the composition of forces and tasks to be solved)
      2. About the use of SF. Can you tell me, by any chance, on the basis of what the USC Sever was formed? So much for your application.
      3. Basing. What the Lord has created is what we use. It would be more correct, in my opinion, to talk about the physical and geographical conditions for the basing of the Northern Fleet and Pacific Fleet. Again the climate. For submarines, depths are very important. In the North - Motovsky Bay - a plateau with H = 300m. Where are you going to go?
But pack ice is nearby ... Well, etc. Therefore, the head was given to the admirals not only to wear a "hat with a handle", but also to think and find non-standard solutions.
      4. It is possible to argue about the composition of the IBM, but the desire to "punish the aggressor" - fully compensates for the formation of the battle formation of such a "IBM".

smile Alexander, I do not in any way claim that the Pacific Theater is better than the North, I am trying to reason. I agree that, the Gulf Stream, proximity to industrial centers, the importance of the NSR during the retreat of pack ice all this increases the value of the Northern Fleet. In your commentary, a long-standing dispute is visible .. who is the most important submarine and NK? smile And here I will not argue, because nuclear submarine forces the main component of the fleet is an axiom, but I argue as a sub-surface. The train of my thoughts tells me that, in the current situation, spraying ships in all fleets is not good, forgive me the Black Sea and Baltic people, but still I think that we need to determine the paramount importance of the Northern or Pacific theater of operations and then saturate this fleet with ships. respectfully hi

Unfortunately, the actual plans for the development of the fleet until 2020 will not solve the main problem - the widespread aging of ships. At the moment, the fleet is capable of performing the tasks assigned to it, however, the service life of most units is already running out. Thus, in order to preserve the potential, it is necessary to introduce a new ship for each ship withdrawn from the forces of ng. In addition, everyone forgot about the forces of the ravine, and this is the MRK, RK, MPK, minesweepers. There is no question of replacing them (with the exception of the Caspian Sea). And these are very popular, effective and inexpensive units in the construction and operation of the fleet. Who if not they perform the functions of protecting the adjacent seas, and the few corvettes will not replace the so-called "mosquito fleet".

The construction of a new aircraft carrier for the Russian Navy is a more interesting issue.
Excuse me, does Russia need an aircraft carrier? Does the author seriously consider this an interesting question? Then the question is, does Russia have an offensive doctrine? Or build up an aircraft carrier and keep it off its coast as an additional air wing? Bullshit is complete. Moreover, Russia did not lead colonial wars, so why do we need this carrier trough? (AUG is an offensive military tool) And is it even worth it to start building such (expensive) engines, if the USA has their 11 pieces in the ranks and 3 of a new class are already being built. And the author apparently believes that for amers we will chase. about the helicopter carriers the same set of issues. And one of the main questions is, How are we going to use both aircraft carriers and helicopter carriers ?!
In addition, rumors have long circulated about the upcoming creation of a promising carrier-based fighter based on the T-50 aircraft (PAK FA program).
PAK FA is a heavy front-line fighter. In simple terms, what size should an aircraft carrier be in order to place at least 40 pieces of this size on this aircraft carrier? And there should be not only fighters, but also accompanying aircraft ... why didn’t the Americans put a sea-based raptor on their F-22 carriers (at least one)? Are they going to put f-35 on their new aircraft carriers. Because they put sea-based LFIs on their carriers and not analogues of heavy fighters due to the size of these aircraft ...

To ensure external security, and to represent the interests of our state abroad, our country needs aircraft carriers, both conventional and with a nuclear power plant. And it is time for military bureaucrats to remember VTOL and start developing the fifth generation VTOL based on the Yak-5.No It is impossible to be limited to aircraft carriers so that our fleet has all types of ships necessary to ensure the security of our state, by all I mean ships, both ocean and coastal protection.

development of fifth-generation VTOL aircraft based on the Yak-5

Actually, progress does not stand still. PAK-FA with engines of the second stage has a full-load run of 8 tons of weapons and 12 tons of fuel - 300 m, and mileage - 500. So he doesn’t really need a catapult, but he also doesn’t need a springboard if there is a 360 m deck long. At the same time, he has enough fuel for 4200 km of flight. For comparison, the same Yak-141 could take on board 1,5 tons of bombs and 4,4 tons of fuel, with normal or short take-off and landing, and could fly 1400 km. By the way, the modern version of the MiG-29k is also able to take off at full load from the springboard. That is why our military requires a magnetic catapult, which takes up much less space, and in the design of a promising aircraft carrier, there is also a catapult and a springboard. After all, the catapult is needed only by AWACS aircraft, and they are only a couple on the aircraft carrier.
