At the same time, the Central Council asked the Germans for military assistance, inviting German and Austro-Hungarian troops to Ukraine. Thus, according to the “nezalezhniki”, legally there was no German occupation of Ukraine in 1918 — simply at the request of the national patriots “on independent” lands, the “peacekeeping contingent” of Kaiser Wilhelm entered. True, in exchange for this "help", the CR committed to deliver to the West 60 million pounds of bread, 2,7 million pounds of meat, as well as eggs, potatoes, sugar, butter, fodder ... However, Little Russians did not want to fold to the Germans of thanksgiving, and products had to be collected by force.
At the same time, all kinds of resistance were cruelly punished, which by no means caused the population to love either the Germans or the national patriots who had invited them. For example, in Nestor Makhno, the Germans and the “blue-domination” shot one brother, and beat the other to death. The Old Man was actively involved in the war against the “peacekeepers”, Petliurists and Skoropadsky, collecting an 1918-thousandth army of offended peasants by the autumn of 60, for which he received one of the first orders of the Red Banner from the hands of L. Trotsky ...
Nevertheless, General Hoffman, chief of staff of the Eastern Front, later - in 1919 - said: “In fact, Ukraine is the business of my hands, and not the fruit of the conscious will of the Russian people.
