Indian Navy may lease K-322 Kashalot submarine

31
In mid-December last year, it became known that the Indian Ministry of Defense was considering the possibility of renting another nuclear submarine from Russia. As part of the Indian Navy for several years, the rented Nerpa / INS Chakra submarine has been serving, in addition to which another can be taken. About a month later, new details of a possible treaty between India and Russia appeared.

Recall 16 December, the head of the Indian Defense Ministry Manohar Parrikar said that India in the foreseeable future intends to hold talks with Russia for the lease of another nuclear submarine. It is assumed that such a deal will significantly increase the potential of the Indian Navy, as well as affect the effectiveness of personnel training. According to some data, at the time of M. Parrikar’s statements, the Russian and Indian sides had already discussed the terms of a possible contract regarding the lease of the second submarine.

In December, in some domestic and foreign media, it was reported that in the interests of India the Irbis submarine could be completed and modernized. Rumors about the upcoming completion of this ship, followed by transfer to the Indian military began to go back in 2013 year, but still have not received confirmation. Moreover, according to the latest reports, the Irbis submarine will not be completed within the framework of the lease agreement.

On January 19, the Interfax news agency, citing a source in the Russian defense industry, provided some details of the negotiations on the new contract. So, in case of signing the contract, the Indian Navy will receive a nuclear submarine on lease for a term of 10 years. The subject of negotiations is the submarine K-322 "Kashalot", which has been under repair for several years.

According to the source "Interfax", the submarine will undergo a deep modernization, which will be made in accordance with the requirements of the customer in the face of the Indian Navy. The Amur Shipbuilding Plant (Komsomolsk-on-Amur), where it is currently located, will be engaged in repairing and updating the submarine.

An unnamed source said that it would take about three years to carry out all the necessary work. Thus, if the contract for the transfer of the submarine "Kashalot" will be signed this year, the repair and upgrading, testing and training of the Indian crew can be completed before 2018 year. Thus, by the beginning of the next decade, there will be two nuclear-powered submarines of Russian construction leased in India as part of the naval forces.

The Sperm Whale submarine belongs to Project 971 Pike-B and is the third serial submarine of this type. It was laid in September 1986 at the Amur Shipyard. Initially, it was classified as a large nuclear submarine. In the summer of next year, the submarine was launched, and then transferred to the Vostok plant in the village of Bolshoy Kamen in a floating dock. December 30, 1988, after carrying out all the tests and checks, the submarine went into operation, and at the end of March next year became part of the Pacific fleet.

In the summer of 1990, the submarine completed its combat service tasks for the first time. For several weeks, the crew of the submarine monitored the boats of foreign fleets for 354 hours, breaking the previous tracking time record.

In April 1992, the submarine was reclassified into nuclear cruising. About a year later, the name Kashalot was added to the new designation K-322.

In 2003, the K-322 “Kashalot” submarine K-XNUMX was sent to the Amur Shipbuilding Plant with the aim of carrying out repairs. For various reasons, the submarine still remains at the factory and is not ready to continue service. In view of the delayed repairs, rumors repeatedly appeared about the possible early cancellation and disposal of the ship.

According to the latest data, the submarine "Kashalot" is currently the subject of negotiations between the Russian and Indian military. If the information of the Interfax agency is true, then in the near future, the repair of the submarine may continue, after which it will be transferred to India.

As a result of negotiations and subsequent work, the Indian Navy can significantly increase their combat potential. The fact is that the overwhelming majority of submarines in the Indian fleet are non-nuclear, which is why their capabilities are seriously limited. Currently, the Indian Navy has only one multi-purpose submarine, the INS Chakra, formerly known as the K-152 "Nerpa". The only nuclear frontline submarine of India was originally built for the Russian Navy, but later an agreement appeared, in accordance with which the boat was completed and handed over to a foreign customer.

In addition to the "Chakra", India has another submarine with a nuclear power plant, but it is currently being tested. Since the mid-eighties, Indian specialists, together with foreign colleagues, have been working on a project of a promising submarine armed with ballistic missiles. Construction of the head boat of the new project began in 1998 year. The ship was named INS Arihant. The launch of the submarine took place in the 2009 year, however, it was put to the sea trials only in the middle of December last year. The exact date of commencement of the service remains unknown. In the future it is planned to build a series of boats with ballistic missiles.

Thus, in the event of the implementation of a possible contract, the Indian Navy will have two multipurpose nuclear submarines and one nuclear submarine with ballistic missiles. Nevertheless, diesel-electric submarines of several types of foreign production will remain the main striking force of the Indian submarine fleet. A specific feature of the future Indian group of nuclear submarines is the fact that in the foreseeable future, India will build on its own only ballistic-missile submarines. Multipurpose submarines are planned to be leased from Russia.

The contract for the transfer of the Indian submarine K-322 Kashalot has not been signed yet. From the words of the source of the Interfax news agency, it follows that at present the Russian and Indian military are discussing the conditions for repair and transfer of the submarine. The details of the new agreement should be announced later when the parties find a common language and clarify all the conditions of the contract.

Not leasing, but leasing. These are different things. In particular, leasing implies that the nuclear submarine will be completely redeemed, which will not happen in the case of a lease.

I agree with the fact that things are wonderful of course)))

It seems to me that some of the crew should be from the "manufacturer" in case, for example, an emergency situation with the propulsion unit. Then the armament is quite ..., let's say, not the simplest (well, as you can see, it is hard to believe that Indians with Russian cruise missiles or missile-torpedoes should treat them like relatives).
So it turns out that the Russian Federation in the Indian Ocean has its own eyes, ears and ... a club with a base in the same place. Now it looks like there will be two nuclear submarines. Otherwise, this "RENT" can not be understood. hi

Let it be better to rent (put into operation) one of the 941 SHARKS, "SEVERSTAL" for example (for a conditional 1 rupee, as for the aircraft carrier "A. Gorshkov") and Invest (together with Makeyevtsy) in the development of missiles (type R-39 ) for her. And the second boat "ARKHANGELSK" can be leased (for 30 years) to China or North Korea. And we benefit (the unique Miracle nuclear submarines will receive a second Life and will be in operation, not cut) and their benefit (from under the ice of the Arctic they will constantly keep frostbitten Pakistan and the States with Japan at the nuclear sight)

What to hold? There are no regular missiles. Such a boat is not needed for PRC missiles and future Hindu missiles, because they are 40 tons in size, not 100. Converting is very expensive if in a CD carrier. And again, such a huge case is not needed. The huge size gives great visibility, which is bad and require significantly more money for maintenance and repair.

Rather, they will take BDRM which, like Tula or Bryansk. If we talk about it.

And cutting US (Strategic nuclear submarines Shark 941) into Needles means you can (to the Joy of the States and NATO) and damage to Russia's Defense and Security. It would be better if the remaining Unique Sharks are in a long-term lease for Hindus and North Koreans than to stand idle (and without missiles) at the berths (waiting for a sentence to be eliminated)

Some kind of idiocy, the Indians have money to restore the plaque, but we? Why do we spend a lot of money on the construction of new airliners, if we have boats in the bins of the motherland that have not served even a third of the term? In 2003, with the help of the Zeya floating dock, the K-322 Sperm wharf submarine was sent to the Amur Shipyard with the aim of carrying out repairs. For various reasons, the submarine still remains at the plant and is not ready to continue service.

It is simply surprising that outright "misinformation" appears on VO. negative I would like to ask the author a question, "where are the firewood from?" Submarine NEVER were not repaired at the Amur shipyard in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. This is what they do in the Big Stone. Transporting boats downstream is an extremely difficult task, let alone going upstream. The only exception in recent history is the DPL pr. 877 B-187, which has been "undergoing repair and modernization" for about 10 years. In addition, construction of two corvettes of Project 20380 is underway.

The submarine fleet of India appeared at the end of the 60-s with the delivery of the USSR's first 4-s diesel-electric submarines of the Ave 641, at the beginning of the 70-s more 4 ships of this type followed. All of them are withdrawn from the fleet, 3 (!) Saved as museums.
    They were followed, almost simultaneously:
    - 4 German diesel-electric submarines of the "209" type ("Shishumar" class, 2 built in Germany, entered service in 1986, 2 built in India in 1992 and 1994) 3 in service, underwent "medium repair", the 4th - under repair, order for 2 more was canceled
    - 10 of our diesel-electric submarines pr. 877EKM (class "Sindugosh", entered service in 1985-90 - 8 units and 2 - in 1997 and 2000, the last - "Sindushastra" already on pr. 08773), 8 in service, "Sindukirti" is being repaired and modernized in India (Vishakapatnam), S63 "Sindurakshak" exploded in Bombay on the night of August 14, 2013, 7 underwent repairs and modernization on pr. 08773 (with the installation of the "Club" missile launcher 3M54E) in Russia on "Zvezdochka" in 1997-2013
Currently, 6 submarines of the French project "Scorpen" have been ordered, all will be built in India, 3 were laid in 2006-08 and are planned to be commissioned in 2015-17 (despite the fact that under the contract, ALL 6 should be commissioned no later 2018, this is already the basis for a shift in the timing "to the right"!).
In fact, the nuclear submarine "Arihant", which is currently undergoing tests, is the third nuclear submarine in the Indian Navy, the first two are our ships, project 670 (1988-91) and project 971I (since 2010), leased out.

The "Arihant" itself will not be a serial ship, but an experimental one, for developing technologies, technical solutions and tactics of application. With its construction, India acquired the final part of the nuclear triad - the nuclear submarine carries 12 K-15 SLBMs (capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, range from 700 km). India does not hide that missiles on submarines are a way to protect part of its nuclear potential from a preemptive strike by the enemy (China, Pakistan), i.e. goes, in its strategic planning, along the path of the superpowers during the Cold War. Submarines following the Arikhant should also carry BR - K-4, longer range (currently under development) - respectively 4 and 8 missiles on the 2nd and 3rd boats, i.e. fulfill a strategic role. Thus, a multipurpose role is assigned to the modernized diesel-electric submarines pr. 877 and 209 (German) or the new pr. 75 and 75I (French, such as "Scorpen", the project is delayed for at least 3 years!), And of the only nuclear submarine pr. 971.
T.O. To date, the Indian Navy has a total of 24 submarines (including 3 nuclear submarines), of which 2 were built at local shipyards, currently, as part of the 16 submarine fleet (including 2 nuclear submarines), including 3 in repair and testing (including 1 nuclear submarines), in construction are 6 submarines (including 3 nuclear submarines). The Indian submarine’s fighting success, today, is not.
The submarine fleet of India is the largest in the Indian Ocean, in terms of the number of units - 6-7 place in the world (with Japan, excluding North Korea and with submarines - 5 or 7)
Currently, a competition is being prepared for 6 nuclear submarines on the "75I" theme, information about the TTT of the Indian Navy has been sent to Russia (Rubin), France (DCNS), Germany (HDW) and Spain (Navantia), it is said that the ship should be more than a non-nuclear submarine of the "Scorpen" type - the "Amur-1650" will have to be scaled! But the main thing is to bring VNEU, without this - no way! Perhaps - with Chinese money ...
In total, the Indian Navy plans to have at least 20 PLs, incl. 20 SSBN

That's right, now India has two nuclear submarines:
      - in service: 971I "Chakra II", the former "Nerpa", she is Irbis (about which in the article all messed up), modernized for India in Bolshoi Kamen, solemnly came to the base in Vishakhapatnam in the spring of 2010;
      - on tests (several times went to sea from the same Visakhapatnam): "Anrikhant", it is the first in the series, the second corps is largely ready, in 4 launchers now there are cassettes of three SLBMs with a radius of 700, in the future in each the mine will each have one full-fledged SLBM (the missile is not yet ready, in the testing phase). The second building on PU will be similar to the first, in the third the number of mines will be increased.
According to NAPL, Russia has practically nothing to offer, we are categorically behind the competitors and this is sad. Project 75 we can’t see, the only chance - if the second leased 971 will be in conjunction with the victory of the Cupids, because competitors cannot offer India a lease, only France has it, but of course no one will do it. Hindus need parity with China on nuclear submarines, so they need 971 on the one hand, but on the other hand it’s not known which VNEU to choose extremely raw Amur, with the ability to choose Scorpen, this is an adventure.

In Russia, there are no combat submarines with VNEUS yet, and Hindus are on a silver platter with a blue border !? You don’t have to go crazy because of imaginary values, and even they will ring money, the roof will be demolished by many in Rosoboronexport.
So let the Arihants bring and build their own at least to the loss of a pulse. Tomahawks will not fly to them, but will fly to us. And there will be nothing to cover !!!

I think that either the Indians will invest in its modernization, or they will hand it over, especially since this is one of the first nuclear submarines of the 971 project to build an ASZ. It’s better to invest the proceeds in the construction of another Ash-M, or on the repair of one of the other multi-purpose Nuclear submarine.

    Quote from rudolf
"It would be funny if it weren't so sad." Why is the fact that, with the light hand of officials from the military department, it is considered to be "ship scrap metal" in other countries become the beauty and pride of the fleet? An aircraft carrier, nuclear submarines ... How much more are we ready to sell out of those withdrawn into the reserve, sedimentation tanks, unfinished construction, always being repaired ... They say that a miser pays twice.

Stop putting the Owl on the globe. "Other countries" are unable to build new nuclear submarines. Therefore, scrap metal for them is "the beauty and pride of the fleet"!
In fact: there are two ways to "restore" a submarine.
1 Deep modernization with the replacement of "all filling"
    2 On-site repair and refurbishment
In the first case, a typical project is developed for a series of ships, the parent manufacturer orders components and equipment from contractors, assembles in large blocks - "modules". Ready blocks are "rolled" into the sawn compartments. Compartments docked, completion and testing. Of the benefits: speed + streaming, seriality for suppliers. Most importantly, completely new features.
Of the minuses:Restriction on the "hull" (the depth of immersion is limited from 80 to 60% of the design. Considering that the cost of building the hull is about 10% of the cost of a new ship, plus there is a phase of "dismantling" - the economic effect of keeping the hull is questionable ...
In the second case, the equipment is repaired and replaced "on site" and "in condition". At the same time, the designer, together with the industry, will "rack his brains" looking for a replacement for the "retired" manufacturers and nomenclature. Accordingly, the repair time will not be small by definition. Plus a large share of low-productivity "manual" labor "on site" will devour a fair share of the savings from "incompleteness" of work. The result - there is no need to talk about a significant increase in characteristics - in fact - the extension of operation.
I summarize: for relatively fresh (up to 25 years) 971 - IMHO 1 option (due to seriality). For 945 and 945A, alas, the second. The elderly 971 does not make sense to restore, if only at the expense of the Hindus.
I hope that Malachite is engaged not only in projects to modernize existing nuclear submarines, but also works for the future. And the failure to use the "animal" reserve for the construction of a completely new project is associated with its completely new (nuclear submarine) concept (in terms of hull structures). Lazurit hopes for the nuclear submarine - alas ...

to the author Kiril Ryabov - I'm wondering what happened to 961 projects? that he had to be dragged to Komsomolsk along the Amur's fairways in the extremely turbulent course of the river, when in the same Bolshoy Kamen where there is a specialized enterprise "Zvezda", even if it does not grow together, maybe we are talking about some other project? Think for yourself, to drag such a colossus under uncertainty to run aground and at a distance of almost 600 km is along the way of a gray mare, approximately the same as if an icebreaker (any) would make its way into the floodplain of the Indigirka River to Ust Nera in early summer, damn it, you pissed off
