NATO plans to create super-fast response forces
It is assumed that the structure of the VJTF (Very High Readiness Joint Task Force) or NATO Spearhead will monitor the situation in Eastern Europe and the Baltic, as well as, if necessary, take part in hypothetical armed conflicts. The main difference of VJTF from the existing rapid reaction forces should be the speed of deployment, as reflected in the name of the structure. It is expected that VJTF troops will need no more than two days to arrive in a given area and deploy there. Other NATO Army units with less strategic mobility should arrive later in the combat area.
Back in September, it became known that the creation of a new superfast response force will start in 2015. The formation of this structure is fully completed in 2016. In the creation of VJTF should take part several states that are part of NATO. The full list of VJTF member countries has not yet been determined, but in the very near future, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway will be involved in the implementation of the project. In the future, other members of the North Atlantic Alliance may join them.
The official reason for creating a new structure is the need to maintain stability in Eastern Europe against the background of current events. However, less streamlined language is often found. A number of foreign and domestic media immediately suggested that the purpose of the VJTF forces would be to counter Russia in the Eastern European region. Recent events vividly show the growth of Russian military power, which is why the leadership of NATO, who does not want to lose its influence in Eastern Europe, has to take appropriate military measures.
Last September, some features of the new structure were announced. Representatives of NATO claimed that about 4 thousand people would serve as part of the VJTF. Forces of super-fast response, if necessary, will be able to receive support from the air or from the sea from the air force or navy. It is noteworthy that the main feature of the new troops was the ability to quickly transfer to a given area - to any European country of NATO within two days.
The formation of the VJTF super-fast response forces should begin this year, but for the time being, NATO countries are discussing various issues related to the creation of a new structure. In early January, a statement by the Ministry of Defense of Norway was published, according to which this state will take an active part in the creation of a new structure.
In the near future, the Norwegian military, together with their colleagues from other NATO countries, will begin to work out various aspects of creating a new structure. In addition, this year Norway will begin to participate in the NATO Response Force (NRF). The NRF will include the Telemark mechanized battalion, which is armed Tanks, armored personnel carriers and other armored vehicles, as well as a missile cruiser, a frigate and a minesweeper.
It is assumed that in addition to performing the main tasks of the NRF structure, the military from Norway and other countries will begin to work out various aspects of creating new super-fast response forces. Norwegian experts will do this together with their German and Dutch colleagues. The work and exercises planned for this year are expected to complete the formation of the VJTF as a fully operational structure by next year.
Against the background of new statements about the creation of super-rapid response forces, publications began to appear in foreign publications, whose authors are trying to make predictions about the prospects of this project. Both positive and negative forecasts are expressed. VJTF is called as a real means of ensuring security in Eastern Europe, as well as a senseless and hopeless attempt to create such a force.
The argument against VJTF is the complexity of creating such a structure. In the case of Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, it is necessary not only to unite a number of units from different countries under common leadership, but also to provide the required mobility. As conceived by the authors of the idea of ultrafast response forces, VJTF troops should arrive in any European NATO country within two days after the corresponding order. To fulfill such requirements, it is necessary to involve a military transport Aviation, which will have to transport troops in an extremely short time.
In addition to technical and organizational problems before the VJTF may be financial difficulties. As follows from the latest statements by the NATO leadership, only European states will participate in the organization of the new structure. The USA, having the strongest army and the most developed economy in the organization, will remain out of work. When considering the situation with this particular feature in mind, we should not forget that after the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and the USSR, the military policy of the European countries has noticeably changed, including defense spending has seriously reduced. Participation in a complex and rather expensive VJTF project may not be enough for some European countries.
The basis of the new group of super-fast response could be units of the countries most militarily developed - Britain, Germany and France. Germany already intends to take part in the creation of a new structure, while London and Paris have not yet announced their decision. Nevertheless, the specifics of the preparation of the military budget of these countries may affect the specifics of their participation in the VJTF. They will have to adjust the budget taking into account participation in a rather complicated and expensive project.
Naturally, with a corresponding desire, the European countries of NATO will be able to create the group Very High Readiness Joint Task Force, designed to preserve peace and stability in Eastern Europe, as well as protect it from some "Russian threat". However, the construction of such super-fast response forces will be associated with large expenditures of money and a host of organizational problems.
At 2015, work is planned related to working out various aspects of the interaction of units from different countries as part of the super-fast response forces. Successful completion of all these works will allow the formation of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force as an efficient structure. However, we cannot exclude another scenario, in which it turns out that European states are not able to build the required structure, as a result of which the project will be frozen or postponed until better times.
