Volumetric explosion

The most powerful and terrible (after the nuclear) weapon - ammunition of a volumetric explosion.

BLU-82 Daisy Cutter (USA). Russian equivalent - ODAB-500PM

Volumetric explosion

Appeared in the 1960-ies of the volume explosion of ammunition and in this century will remain one of the most destructive non-nuclear ammunition. The principle is quite simple: the initiating charge undermines the container with a flammable substance, which instantaneously forms an aerosol cloud mixed with air, undermined by the second detonating charge. Approximately the same effect is obtained by the explosion of domestic gas.

A modern volumetric explosion ammunition is most often a cylinder (its length in 2 – 3 is greater than the diameter), filled with combustible matter for spraying at the optimum height above the surface. The initial fuse, the mass of which is usually 1 – 2% of the weight of a combustible substance, is located along the symmetry axis of the warhead. The detonation of this fuse destroys the body and sprays combustible material to form an explosive air-fuel mixture. Ideally, the mixture should be undermined after reaching the size of the cloud, which ensures optimum combustion. Actually, the explosion does not occur after the primary detonator has been detonated (the fuel cannot burn without an oxidizer), but after the secondary detonators have triggered, and the delay is from 150 ms and more.

In addition to the powerful destructive effect, a volume explosion ammunition produces a tremendous psychological effect. For example, during Operation Storm in the Desert, British special forces, performing missions in the rear of the Iraqi troops, accidentally witnessed the use of a volume explosion by the Americans. The charge made on the usually imperturbable Englishmen such an action that they were forced to interrupt the radio silence and broadcast the information that the allies had used nuclear weapons.

And in August, 1999 of the year, during the period of Chechen aggression against Dagestan, a large-caliber bomb of a volumetric explosion was dropped on the Dagestan aul of Tando, where a large number of Chechen militants gathered, (apparently, ODAB-XNUMHMP). Militants suffered huge losses, but the psychological effect was even stronger. In the following days, the mere appearance of a single (precisely single) attack aircraft SU-500 above the settlement forced the militants to hastily leave the village. There was even a slang term "Tando effect".
