Ukrainian army gets new military equipment
Externally, the ceremony of the transfer of technology looked spectacular. On the runway of the airfield, various combat vehicles of different classes and types were lined up in several rows. Apparently, such a “parade system" was supposed to inspire the military and impress the civilian population of Ukraine. Indeed, the simultaneous transfer of hundreds of pieces of equipment to the troops looks impressive and cannot but please the supporters of the new authorities. According to Ukrainian media, the troops received Tanks T-64BM Bulat, T-64BV, T-72B1, T-72UA and T-72A, as well as armored personnel carriers and several helicopters.
The transfer ceremony of the equipment came out spectacular and memorable, but for specialists and amateurs of military affairs, it looks completely unequivocal. We can say that the solemn event was held in order to hide the real situation and at the same time save face. The situation in the Ukrainian army and defense industry for a very long time makes you want something better, which has been regularly demonstrated in recent months. For example, the basis of the tank units of the army are T-64 tanks of various modifications, built before the collapse of the Soviet Union. More new equipment is also present, but its quantity is small and cannot have a serious impact on the state of the troops. As for industry, for example, in recent decades, tank-building enterprises of Ukraine have built very few new tanks, because most of the time they either repaired the existing equipment or stood idle without military orders.
Available information about the state of the army and industry in Ukraine puts the recent ceremony in a very interesting light. Detailed consideration of the equipment transferred to the troops is of great interest, since it can reveal the real situation in the neighboring country.
During the "anti-terrorist operation", the armed forces of Ukraine lost several dozen aircraft and helicopters, which extremely negatively affected the condition of the already small fleet of combat-ready aviation technicians. On December 6, a new helicopter transfer took place, which is expected to correct the situation to some extent. Seven multi-purpose helicopters were handed over to the troops: three Mi-8MSB-V, two Mi-2MSB and two Mi-2. Before the transfer, the last two cars underwent repair and restoration. The remaining helicopters were repaired at the Motor Sich enterprise and received new engines. Mi-8 received engines TV3-117VMA-SBM1V 4E, Mi-2 - AI-450M.
It is noteworthy that the troops did not receive a single specialized combat helicopter. All seven "new" cars are designed to transport people and cargo, and in addition, they are modernized old helicopters. However, in the existing conditions of shortage of equipment and such supplies may be useful. In the spring and summer, the Donbass militia managed to inflict such damage on the Ukrainian Air Force that even seven helicopters would not be superfluous.
Together with seven helicopters, the military received several dozen armored personnel carriers and tanks. Thus, a number of armored personnel carriers BTR-4E were delivered to the Chuguev airfield. These machines were developed by Kharkov designers, but so far have not been supplied to the armed forces of Ukraine. Due to the financial capabilities of the military, the first order for the supply of BTR-4E was signed only in July of this year. However, even in the spring the first armored vehicles of this model were transferred to the National Guard. Last Saturday, the transfer of the first army armored vehicles.
Of great interest is the "origin" of at least part of the armored personnel carriers transferred on December 6. Last year, Ukrainian enterprises fell into an extremely embarrassing situation: Iraq, which ordered the BTR-4E vehicles, rejected the next batch and refused to accept it. As a result, the ship with armored vehicles spent several months in the roadstead, was then arrested, and eventually returned back to Ukraine. It is this technique after minor modifications, apparently, formed the basis of the party transferred a few days ago.
In addition to the Fours, the Ukrainian military for the first time received several armored personnel carriers BTR-3E1U. Until recently, such machines were supplied only to foreign customers. In May 2014, several BTR-3Е1У were handed over to the National Guard, and soon an order from the ground forces appeared. According to some reports, the Ukrainian security forces received equipment, built on the order of Thailand, but never transferred to this country.
The defense industry of Ukraine can produce a relatively small range of military equipment. For this reason, special attention is paid to the repair of existing machines. For example, on December 6, the military was handed over several 2СXNNXX “Carnation” self-propelled artillery systems with 1 mm caliber guns. Probably, these cars recently took part in the battles, after which they were sent for repairs. After restoring self-propelled guns returned to the military.
Similar is the case with other armored vehicles. Thus, the T-64BM “Bulat” tanks were already seen in the combat zone and now appeared at the ceremony of transferring equipment. It is reported that December 6 troops were transferred "Bulat", recently undergone repairs. In September, a number of combat vehicles were transferred to the Kharkov plant them. Malysheva for the purpose of repair. Restoration of the first batch of tanks completed, over 10 machines transferred to the military. Until the end of the year, Kharkiv specialists must repair a few dozen more T-64BMs.
The fleet of tank units of Ukraine on Saturday was replenished with several modernized T-64B1M tanks. Such equipment has not previously been in service with the Ukrainian army and its “origin” raises questions. According to some reports, the military received armored vehicles built to the order of the Congolese army, as a result of which the African country was left without the desired technology. According to other sources, T-64B1М for Ukraine are relatively new and are taken from storage tanks, upgraded according to the “Congolese” project.
Of particular interest are the tanks of the T-72 family shown on Saturday. Ukraine has long abandoned the operation of such equipment in favor of the T-64 and its modifications. Now, the situation with the equipment forces the command of the armed forces to resume the operation of the decommissioned equipment. T-72UA and T-72AV tanks were transferred to the troops. The equipment of both modifications was built in the interests of third countries and had to go to foreign customers. Thus, T-72UA tanks were previously supplied to Ethiopia, and T-XNUMHAB, according to various sources, were to be sent to South Sudan or to Nigeria. However, all these vehicles were removed from the export order and transferred to their own armed forces.
In addition to military equipment, the army received several trucks from the Kremenchug Automobile Plant. It is noteworthy that only these vehicles can be considered as truly new equipment, built specifically for arming the Ukrainian army. All other armored vehicles and helicopters handed over to the December 6 military got into the army in more complex ways: they were repaired, removed from storage, restored and modernized, including in the interests of the armies of third countries.
Last Saturday, it became known that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense wants to arm the army not only with its own stored equipment, but also with foreign machines. Deputy Director General of the Ukroboronprom enterprise Sergey Pinkas 6 of December said that the Ministry of Defense had decided to purchase light armored cars. Experts have studied the existing market and made their verdict. It turned out that an Ukrainian-made armored car with the required characteristics costs about 5,5 million hryvnias, a similar European vehicle - at least 430-460 thousand euros. At the same time, it is possible to purchase a British-made Saxon armored car that will cost 38 thousand US dollars. Taking into account the delivery and execution of the necessary documents, the price of one such machine will grow to 51 thousand dollars.
According to S. Pinkas, the first batch of AT-105 Saxon decommissioned cars will arrive in Ukraine in the next few days. The rest of the equipment will be delivered in the future 2015 year. Such a new old equipment is considered an affordable alternative to outdated vehicles in service with the Ukrainian army. After the transfer to the Ukrainian side, the Saxons will undergo modernization, during which they will receive a kind of combat module.
Details of the transaction have not yet been published. The authors of the BMPD blog believe that British-made AT-105 Saxon armored cars, long overdue from the United Kingdom Army, will be purchased from US-based General Equipment Inc. This organization once bought up the British equipment that was decommissioned and now sells it to anyone.
In total, last Saturday, the Ukrainian army received 102 units of military equipment. Careful consideration of this supply confirms the precarious situation in the military and defense industry. In order to meet the needs of the army, which has suffered serious losses in recent months, enterprises have not only to work in several shifts, but also to refuse foreign customers to execute their orders.
Nevertheless, despite the methods and methods of fulfilling orders, the Ukrainian armed forces nevertheless received a repaired and reconstructed equipment that can be used in battles. Naturally, a long stay in storage has a negative effect on the condition of armored vehicles, but they still retain a certain combat effectiveness and, after repair, can perform the assigned combat missions.
This means that in the very near future in the area of the so-called. anti-terrorist operation will appear new tanks, armored personnel carriers, trucks and helicopters. It is obvious that part of the equipment transferred on Saturday will soon be destroyed or will become a trophy of the Donbass militia. However, before that, any vehicle can cause serious damage to both the militia and civilians. It seems that the Kiev authorities intend to continue the war. A recent transfer of technology confirms such concerns. Militias need to prepare for future attacks of the enemy.
