Floating wheeled armored personnel carrier Kestrel from Tata Motors and DRDO

At the exhibition DefExpo 2014, the Kestrel BTR, created by Tata Motor, was shown

Tata Motors has become one of several Indian and foreign companies that have been invited by the Fighting Vehicle Development Department (part of the Defense Research and Development Organization DRDO) to request information on the supply of chassis, power plant and weapons systems for a floating wheeled armored platform. Other Indian companies invited to participate in the application were L&T and Mahindra & Mahindra, and Russian Rosoboronexport was among the foreign companies.

Tata responded to a request for information, and later to a request for proposals for all three modules of the armored personnel carrier, and subsequently won all three contracts. After issuing the contract, the company was very surprised by DRDO, having developed the entire platform in just 18 months. (Such an active position of Tata in the development of a new BTR, despite all its manufacturer’s experience, limited to power plants and chassis, may be the reason why no one had heard of Kestrel BTR until almost the beginning of the DefExpo 2014 exhibition). But on the other hand, such a short development time showed DRDO in an unfavorable light!

The Kestrel BTR has an 7,8 meter length, an 2,28 meter width, the crew of the vehicle is two people plus it can accept a detachment of troops in the number of 10 people.

The ballistic protection of the Kestrel BTR modular. Protection modules can be replaced in a short time depending on the level of threat. They range from Stanag 1 to Stanag 4.

Depending on the configuration, Kestrel can weigh from 18 to 22 tons. The maximum mass can reach 26 tons, but after 22 tons, the BTR loses its amphibious characteristics.

On the ground, it accelerates to 100 km / h. On the water, with the help of two water jets, the car accelerates to 10 km / h.

The armored vehicle has an 600 horsepower engine, and the power density ranges from 26,6 to 23 hp / t.

Note the rearview mirror on the floating armored personnel carrier!

The BTR is armed with a remote-controlled combat module with a 30-mm cannon, a twin 7,62-mm machine gun and an automatic grenade launcher. In addition, he is able to take a complex of anti-tank missiles Javelin. The machine can be optimized for coastal, desert and mountainous areas.

The complex of weapons for armored personnel carriers may vary depending on customer requirements. Tata relies on the modularity and open architecture of the machine to match its various tasks.

The Indian army has shown its interest in the car and wants to take part in the project before the configuration of the BTR will be finally approved.

All major Kestrel BTR subsystems are more or less uniform with the standard systems manufactured by Tata, that is, the maintenance of this vehicle is less expensive than foreign armored personnel carriers.

What can I say. The Indians already have their own tank, it's time to acquire their own armored personnel carriers. Judging by the description, the concept of the South African "Ratel" was taken as a basis, adjusted for Indian road conditions. Modular protection - again delivers and suggests that in this area they want to lay a solid modernization potential in the car. The habitable tower is an old proven solution. The armament complex is more likely for BMPs than for armored personnel carriers, but this may not be bad, since there are no extra barrels. The installation of a javelin and machine guns is perhaps unsuccessful, since no weapons. no sighting devices are covered with armor.

It’s probably time. Any armored personnel carrier is not a miracle of technology at all, and such a power as India can and should create such machines.
But if it turned out (little is written about the combat qualities in the article, but they are determined mainly after quite a long operation in the troops and participation in hostilities) as MBT Arjun, to put it mildly not entirely successful, then it would be better to buy a license . Yes

At the expense of this "not at all a miracle" What is stated in the performance specifications is a miracle. Oh, he is "such a stsuka" and 100 km on land and 10 km on water. And 4th options for armor, from a penknife to tandem ammunition, everything keeps wassat .
It's simple: This Indian propaganda industry is called "BUY OUR ELEPHANTS"

South African "Ratel" adjusted for Indian road conditions

the concept may be, but the running gear, clearly not "Ratel" (it has "MAN" bridges), the running gear is more likely to be like the Piranha / LAV "....

the modernization potential of "Ratel" is large, which is confirmed by the release of a new version from BAE Systems of the BTR "Iklwa" 6x6 ...

I meant that, in my subjective opinion, it was created rather a wheeled infantry fighting vehicle, which in essence is Ratel, and not an armored personnel carrier in its purest form

A good Indians armored personnel carrier turned out. Charismatic.
By the way, a new Kongsberg Protector MCT-30R combat module is installed on the machine. The Vikings rustle.

The machine looks beautiful, the parade will look great. And the characteristics at first glance are not bad. But for the war, it seems to me - hardly suitable. Except for the dispersal of local Aboriginal people somewhere in Sri Lanka.

is not a fact. Fundamentally little different from their eminent relatives. Actually, both Boomerang and Atlas have the same concept - front or middle engine layout, modular reservation, rear landing. The only difference from the global trend is the inhabited tower. But this is easy to fix if not by developing your own weapons remote control module, then one of the many existing on the market. Only real operation will identify problems and determine the place in the rating. As practice shows, following concepts and trends is not enough. The devil is in the details and not everyone can make a balanced combat vehicle.

Hey! .. "Boomerang", where are you? !! ..

Already the Indians were able to knock down their new armored personnel carrier. And "Boomerang", which urrya-patriots licked with such masochistic pleasure and is still there. According to the last infe, its developers faced a number of difficulties that slowed down the work. The question is - where to find experienced developers of light wheeled armored vehicles? ..
So the boomer may not be in time for the 2015 parade rich in novelties. And in the army by the promised time and even more so ...

Z.Y. Sorry if you didn’t touch the tender urry-patriotic strings of someone there. But I am a pragmatic person to cynicism ...

Boomerang has one serious drawback - the lack of a stern ramp. which simplifies the landing, and retained the cramped combat and airborne squad, and the rather low mine protection inherent in the BTR70-80 series. And to enhance firepower, you can stupidly replace the tower on the 80s. What actually did.

The back door is below the waterline, is this not critical? In theory, there should be pumps. The loopholes on the sides, everything is as it should be.

Let the Indians forgive me, but I do not see any charisma or beauty in this "brick".
