Russia for the first time celebrates the Day of the Unknown Soldier

Today, the Day of the Unknown Soldier is celebrated in Russia for the first time. The date was not chosen by chance - 3 December 1966 of the year in commemoration of 25 years after the defeat of the German troops near Moscow, the remains of an unknown soldier were removed from a mass grave located on the 41 kilometer of the Leningrad highway for a solemn burial in Alexander Garden.
"Starting from 2014, a new memorable date is set in Russia - the Day of the Unknown Soldier," the press service of the Russian Defense Ministry reports. "RT in Russian".
This memorable date was established at the initiative of the participants in the movement, which is looking for the remains of the dead soldiers to perpetuate their memory.
“The idea was in the air among search engines and members of military-patriotic organizations (...) The search engines also reminded us that we already have December 9 Heroes Day, but stories there are still many heroes of the unknown and nameless, ”said Denis Sadovnikov, head of the RVIO department for work with state and public organizations.
The solemn ceremony in honor of the memorable day will be held in the Borodino Field Museum-Preserve, on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow and in Tula.
Borodino will be visited by the Minister of Culture of Russia and the Chairman of the Russian Military Historical Society Vladimir Medinsky. And on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow will be held a solemn laying of wreaths at the Eternal Flame. In Tula, in the framework of the Day of the Unknown Soldier, the opening of a monument to the heroes of the First World War will be held.
