Unknown vandals in the capital of the Czech Republic painted in pink the lower half of the monument to Marshal of the Soviet Union Ivan Konev, who liberated the city from the fascists in 1945, reports RIA News with reference to the representative of the administrative district of Prague-6 Adam Galmosi.
The official said at a press conference: “Unidentified persons desecrated at night a monument to the Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev in the Interbrigade Square, repainting its lower half in pink”. He noted that the monument has already been cleared of paint, the police are searching for vandals.
Currently, it is the only surviving monument of many others, established by Soviet military leaders and politicians. After the Communists were removed from power in 1989, they were all torn down or sent to museums.
The monument to Konev is also not left alone: in power structures there are occasionally raised questions about his future fate. Some offer to move it to the back, others - to reduce the height of the pedestal, so as not to catch the eye. But so far, the marshal with a bouquet of lilacs in his hand still looks from a three-meter-high height to the city, which his cost-saving lives have saved him from destruction in 1945.
The agency’s reference: “The Monument to Ivan Stepanovich Konev was installed in Prague in 1970 in memory of the liberation of the Czech capital from the Nazis in 1945 by troops under the command of the marshal. Konev was a famous Soviet commander who received many medals and orders, including "For the capture of Berlin" and "For the liberation of Prague."
