Europe fears jihadist invasion
According to various sources, there are currently about three thousand European citizens in Iraq and Syria, most of whom have joined the Islamic State radical group.
“Soon we may have to face the enormous problem of the return of Europeans from Syria and Iraq,” quotes Gilles de Kershova, the former anti-terrorist coordinator in Europe "Expert".
European leaders have already begun to prepare to repel this threat: by the end of this year, the EU may adopt a law providing for the exchange of data on arriving passengers.
Meanwhile, in the summer there was a message that up to three hundred participants of military clashes in Syria have already returned to Europe. According to experts on international terrorism, the threat of terrorist attacks is now as never before high.
Another problem was that even if Islamic radicals were found returning home, it would be difficult to do something with them because of the vaunted European democracy, which only allows to observe, since it is almost impossible to prove their participation in the battles and the commission of crimes.
That is why checks at airports, railway stations and seaports are being strengthened, and passport control is becoming tougher. These are necessary measures, but due to the porosity of the European borders one can hardly expect that they will be able to protect the EU from the terrorist attacks of Islamic radicals who have returned from the Middle East.
