Right after the bridge, the village of Peski begins - the last point held by the Ukrainian military. For those who are at the airport, this is almost the rear. The object, the battles for which have been going on since May, is being retained by the military personnel of the 93 and 95 airborne brigades, fighters from the Dnipro, Right Sector, and OUN volunteer battalions help them. The military settled in houses abandoned by local residents, although not all of them left, despite the daily shelling.
Officer 95 of the brigade Askold says: the Donetsk airport in the Ukrainian army is important because it allows the leadership of the DPR to be kept in suspense and does not allow the front line to be moved away from Donetsk.
“The truce here was never really observed, but the most active battles were going on until October 7,” says Askold. “The losses from the DPR in those days were great. The airport for them is an analogue of Ilovaisk, which it became for the Ukrainian troops. After October 8, the situation began to calm down.
According to the officer, from Sands to the positions of the NPT - no more than 500 meters, "only you can hardly pass them." The military explain that even when the parties once again agree on a temporary truce, as it was yesterday, it periodically fails due to inconsistency in the actions of different departments.
“On the front line there is Oplot, Vostok, which operate autonomously, our volunteer battalions also often do something without looking at the command,” they say.
On the same street in one of the village houses is the headquarters of the newly created volunteer battalion of the OUN - the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. The battalion is commanded by Nikolay Kokhanovsky, who became famous a few years ago for breaking his nose off a monument to Lenin in the center of Kiev. According to him, his fighters took up positions in Piski in mid-August and since then they have been trying to interact with the 93 brigade.
“We have a tedious trench warfare and no heroism here, as in Rambo-2,” says Nikolai Kokhanovsky. “This is a war of spotters, artillery, Gradov.” We have seen the enemy somewhere far away a maximum of two or three times.
In the courtyard, the 8 recruits of the OUN battalion lined up for taking the oath, the command first looks for a banner for a long time, but then decides to do without it.
- Why did this battalion choose? - I ask one of the fighters.
“At first I joined another, but I didn’t want to fight there, but only to perform police functions,” he says. “Therefore, I decided to move here, immediately to the front line.
