How self-made military equipment is involved in real battles
Combat homemade equipment in stories
The first mention of the use of artisanal armored vehicles belong to the times of the First World War. Separate guerrilla units, insurgents, militias, faced with the need to build defensive and offensive positions, were forced to counter homemade armored vehicles with military equipment of regular armies, which was gradually transplanted from horses. Often the basis for such ersatz-machines were tractors, already then turned into the main agricultural and construction equipment.
So, in the revolutionary Russia, the first to use self-made armored vehicles were the White Guards. Professional officers of tsarist Russia in the battles against the peasants and the proletariat lost because of the insufficient technical staffing of their troops. To compensate for this, they tried homemade weapons and cars. One of the most striking examples of artisanal techniques of the time was the armored vehicle "Colonel the Prayer-Free". Built on the basis of the Clayton tractor by the Don Army in 1918, the armored vehicle could accommodate the 11 crew man, sheathed with thick metal sheets, and also armed with a 76,2-mm field tool in the stern and six Maxim XMUMX machine guns of the year Maxim. However, in the battle the car turned out to be extremely inconvenient due to its bulkiness and size. An ordinary horse moved the guns and guns of that time much faster.
The interwar period was the most striking in the development of the construction of armored tractors. In Russia and Europe, many copies of such equipment were created, often in a single copy. However, it would not be entirely correct to call it handicraft production, since tractors were factory-trimmed with armor under the supervision of engineers and designers, and, as a rule, did not participate in real battles.
World War II also prompted enthusiasts to rush to create heavy military equipment, which this time was supposed to withstand aviation and tanks of professional armies. So, for example, the USSR created the NI-1 tank (“To Fright”), an impromptu armored tractor built in 1941 in Odessa to defend the city. A light cannon or machine gun on a rotating turret was installed on the roof of NI-1. These tanks participated in many battles in the early years of the war, and some of them have survived to this day.
There are a lot of examples of this kind of equipment, such ersatz tanks, armored cars and other surrogate heavy machinery were made in many cities with developed industry. However, again, it would not be entirely correct to call such production artisanal.
But tiznaosa, widely used during the Spanish Civil War, were the most real example of "home production." Tiznaos due to the fact that there are no general characteristics of this collective concept, not much is known. Many of these machines were quite a formidable technique in urban environments: machine guns mounted on their roofs, turret systems and light guns were a serious force in the fight against government forces.
Post-war history was also rich in various instances of such technology. Everywhere, where the battles of the regular army took place against scattered insurgent groups, starting with Vietnam, Afghanistan, the Middle East, and then the Balkans and the countries of the former Soviet Union, they found unique examples of fantasies of local designers.
Speaking about home-made equipment, one can not forget Marvin Himeyeer's armored bulldozer. The brainchild of the last American hero participated in only one single battle, but deserves attention for some kind of technical excellence. The Komatsu D355A-3 armored with thick metal sheets was not armed, but it had special embrasures for firing from the inside, cameras for navigation hidden in bullet-proof plastic cases, engine cooling system and airtight cabin ventilation. 200 bullet hits and a few grenade explosions did not cause any damage to the bulldozer, and only the collapsed roof of the building was able to stop it.
Sham-2 and Syrian Artillery
Actually, the "Sham-2". The country of production is Syria. Built on the base of an unknown vehicle chassis, armor thickness - 2, 5 centimeter. Not able to withstand a direct hit from a grenade launcher or tank gun. Improvised BMP dimensions - 4 x 2 meters. On the roof of the mounted machine 7, 62-mm machine gun. The crew includes two people - the driver and the arrow. Navigation is carried out at the expense of five cameras mounted in the body of equipment, the shooter controls the machine gun using a gamepad. The combat duty of the car is near the city of Aleppo. There is no official evidence of the participation of “Sham-2” in the battles, but given the harsh economic conditions in which the Syrian rebels are forced to exist, it is safe to say that the car was not built for entertainment and can serve as BMPs, providing fire support to local militants in urban and field conditions.
It is worth noting that in general modern Syrians are leaders in the manufacture of improvised weapons. The Internet is filled with examples of handicraft grenades, artillery fire systems, flamethrowers and other equipment.
Untitled multiple rocket launcher system
This system was discovered by the Israeli military in 2010 in the Gaza Strip. MLRS installed on the basis of a dump truck. The trailer is equipped with nine guide pipes for launching Qassam rockets, which, by the way, are the pride of Palestinian handicrafts. Such a rocket is made of a hollow tube from 70 to 230 centimeters in length, stuffed with explosives, and the accelerator is a common mixture of sugar and potassium nitrate, used everywhere as fertilizer. Burning out, this mixture emits a large amount of gas capable of sending a rocket a distance of 3 – 18 kilometers. However, the quality of aimed shooting on such installations leaves much to be desired.
Plus similar MLRS - in excellent disguise. Driving unhindered to urban sites, such a garbage truck can be quickly brought to combat readiness.
Homemade armored cartels
The criminal elements involved in the production and sale of drugs have a special imagination. For example, earlier we wrote about how Colombian drug lords build real submarines to transport cocaine. And their colleagues from Mexico prefer other equipment - armored transport vehicles. The guns on such armored personnel carriers have not been installed, but the crew, through special loopholes, can conduct aimed fire. However, Mexicans do not pay attention to the wheels, focusing on the speed of movement of such equipment, which becomes, as a rule, a weak point in improvised armored personnel carriers. If you pierce the rubber, moving on such a machine, given the weight of the armor, becomes almost impossible.
Armored Syrian Kurds
The photos of these “vundervaffe” were supposedly taken on the territory of Syria and moved through various information portals since spring 2014 of the year. There is no official information about improvised armored vehicles, the ownership of the equipment can be identified by drawings on the armor - such a logo is the official symbol of the Syrian Popular Self-Defense Detachment, the combat wing of the Kurdish Supreme Committee participating in the Syrian armed conflict.
Homemade equipment of the Libyan rebels
The favorite weapon of the Libyan rebels, the so-called “technicals” machines, is a self-made symbiosis of the Soviet NAR, SZO, anti-aircraft guns and various pickups.
Homemade equipment security and militia of Ukraine
Photos of homemade vehicles of various forces fighting on the territory of Ukraine, also go on the Internet since the summer. Under conditions of limited funding, Ukrainian security forces and militiamen book Russian KamAZ vehicles and redo old Soviet equipment.
Confirm the participation of most of these exhibits in battles is quite difficult. However, for example, the armored KamAZ "Zhelezheka" of the battalion "Azov" participated in the battles of Mariupol and even became the hero of the news.
