Store pistol Remington Ryder (Remington Rider) and its variants

Remington Company is famous for its revolvers and pistols. We have repeatedly written about such pistols as Remington-Elliot Derringer, Remington Zig-Zag Derringer, Remington Double Derringer. The company also produced revolvers and rifles. At the end of the 19 century, it occupied one of the leading places on the market weapons.

The Remington Ryder (Remington Rider) magazine pistol has very recognizable features. The pistol consists of a frame with a handle, a barrel, an under-barrel magazine, parts of a firing mechanism and a reloading mechanism.

The pistol was designed by Joseph Rider (Joseph Rider), who registered a patent for his 15 brainchild of August 1871, under the number XXNX. The design of the under-barrel shop is very similar to the Volcanic pistol shop device and was probably borrowed from it.

The pistol reloading mechanism was very unusual and original. The breech block locks the cocking lever (reloading), inside which the trigger is installed. When retracted, the spokes of the cocking lever (reloading lever) are back, the cartridge case is removed from the chamber, the trigger is cocked and the cartridge from the magazine is fed to the barrel bore line. When the platoon lever moves forward, a cartridge is sent to the chamber and the barrel bore is locked — the pistol is ready to fire. When you press the trigger there is a shot.

In the patent illustrations, Joseph Ryder’s pistol has a trigger guard. In addition, loading the magazine cartridges, according to one of the drawings, had to be made through a special window at the bottom of the store in front.

In fact, the patent describes a prototype Remington Ryder pistol (Remington Rider), which was produced only at the beginning of the 70 of the 19 century.

The barrel of the prototype was of circular cross section, length 66 mm. The frame is made of brass and provided with a trigger guard. On the left side of the frame there is a window intended probably for the equipment of the store.

Later, the Remington Ryder pistol was upgraded and became more compact and ergonomic, which should be a pocket weapon. The frame has become less massive, the trigger guard has disappeared, the shape of the handle cheeks has changed.

The gun has increased the barrel length to 76 mm, with a total weapon length of 145 mm, but otherwise the basic design of the Remington Rider magazine pistol did not change, but remained the same as the prototype.

The trigger of the pistol is almost hidden in the frame and only when cocking the hammer it slightly protrudes from the frame of the weapon.

The spring of the pistol plate dvuhperaya located in the cavity of the handle.

The spoke of the trigger and the cocking lever have a relief notch. The hammer of the trigger is flat, as is the case with other weapons launched at the end of the 19 century, rechargeable with ring ignition cartridges.

On the back side of the pistol grip is installed a screw fastening the base of the feeder cartridge.

In the upper part of the front side of the handle is set the fastening screw of the mainspring.

Remington Ryder pistol sights consist of a semicircular front sight and a hole in the cocking lever (reloading).

The magazine of the pistol is under-barrel of a tubular form, it allows to place five round ignition cartridges of the .32 caliber with a short metal sleeve (.32 Extra Short). To equip the store, you must remove the cylindrical liner that serves as the cover of the store. Fixing the insert of the store is carried out by a protrusion in the lid of the store, which is included in the recess under the barrel.

The barrel of the Remington Ryder pistol (Remington Rider) has an octahedral cross-section. At the muzzle end of the barrel is cylindrical. The barrel of the gun has five rifling.

At the top of the barrel there is a two-line marking with the manufacturer's company, place of manufacture and the name of the patent “E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. NY / RIDERS PAT. AUG. 15TH. 1871. ".

Types of pistols Remington Ryder (Remington Rider)

Speaking about the varieties of Remington Ryder pistols, first of all, it should be noted the prototype of a military sample, which was developed for the .44 cartridge size. The gun had a barrel length 230 mm.

The patent number # XXUMX was issued to Joseph Ryder for this gun 141590 August 5. The use of a more powerful and massive cartridge demanded that adjustments be made to the device of the supply of ammunition from the store and significantly complicated the weapon. The gun was not adopted.

Other types of Remington Ryder pistols are due to the different finishes of the frame, barrel and cheeks of the handle.

The first finishing option: nickel-plated metal parts with barrel engraving, wooden cheeks.

The next option has a silvered barrel and a magazine. Golden color frame with smooth divorces, wooden handle cheeks. The trigger, trigger and cocked lever blued.

The pistol Remington Rider of the simplest version has a nickel-plated barrel, magazine and frame. Trigger, cocking lever and cock blued, wooden handle cheeks. Engraving on the details of the weapon is missing.

The engraving of a vegetative ornament on the frame case is quite often found. In this embodiment, there is no engraving on the trunk and the store. The trigger and cocking lever blued, nickel-plated trigger.

Remington Ryder more expensive finishes usually had a more refined engraving on the frame and on the trunk, sometimes the cheeks of the handle were made of mother-of-pearl.

A rare decoration option in which all metal parts, including the trigger and the cocking lever, are nickel-plated. In addition, engraving and memorable inscriptions are put on the cheeks of the pistol grip.

The pistol version with a rich engraving of the barrel and frame, as well as the cheeks of the ivory handle is quite a rare and valuable weapon.

The Remington Ryder magazine pistol (Remington Rider) was produced between 1871 and 1888 of the year. The estimated number of weapons released today is estimated to be a little over 10000. At antique auctions in the United States, a gun can often be found in good condition. The price of a gun depends on the options for finishing and keeping weapons and ranges from 1,5 to 5 thousand dollars.

      Thanks for the interesting stuff!

      Reminded something.
At about the same time, Austrian major Alfred Kropachek designed a sub-barrel magazine with a feed mechanism adapted for a sliding gate.

A magazine rifle of the Gra-Kropachek system sample 1874-1878 under the 11mm cartridge system Gra.

A little later, the Lebel magazine rifle, the 1886 model (Lebel Mle. 1886), appeared.
It fired cartridges with smokeless powder, which were created on the basis of the 11mm cartridge case of the cartridge of the same Gra system.

The cartridge is rather weak. Yes, and recharging is not very convenient. But the idea is interesting.

    - How old weapons differ from modern plastic "hair dryers" and "electric drills"!
    - Polished metal, engraving, notching, wood ... made by hand, with love ...
