October 1 - Day of the Ground Forces of Russia
In order to revive and develop domestic military traditions, increase the prestige of military service and in recognition of the merits of military specialists in solving the tasks of ensuring the defense and security of the state, I decree:
Install in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation:
(...) Ground Forces Day - October 1.
Why was the date of October 1 chosen as the date of the celebration? The reason is in the information that military historians managed to glean from documents more than four centuries ago. One of these historical documents dated October 1, 1550 - then Ivan IV the Terrible issued a decree (in the tradition of that time - the Sentence), bearing the name "On the premises in Moscow and surrounding districts of a selected thousand service people." Historians believe that this particular order of Ivan IV can be considered a new stage in the formation of the army, the basis of which at that time was precisely the ground army.
Of course, this does not mean that land units before 1 in October 1550 were absent in our Fatherland. They were during the reign of the state and other members of the Rurik dynasty. However, it was Ivan the Terrible who laid the legislative foundation for the development of the army, one of the most important components of which is still the Ground Forces.
Emperor Alexander I played a special role in the development of the Ground Forces. It was during his reign that the State Ground Forces Ministry appeared in the state, which, according to the 1802 manifesto of the year, absorbed the Military Collegium established in 1719 by Peter I. The first minister of the new ministry established Emperor Alexander I, became a native of Rylsky district of Kursk province Sergey Kuzmich Vyazmitinov. 8 September 1802, he took office and stayed at that place until January 1808.
It was SK Vyazmitinov who became the man who developed the new approach to the divisional formation of army structures, and also stood at the origins of the formation of the Zemstvo militia. That same militia, whose representatives heroically showed themselves later - during the war with Napoleon’s army.
In 1815, the Ministry of the Army Ground Forces was renamed the Ministry of War of the Russian Empire. Before being renamed, he was headed by such famous personalities as Alexey Andreevich Arakcheev, Mikhail Bogdanovich Barclay de Tolly and Alexey Ivanovich Gorchakov.
Since 1812, the ministry has included three main sectors:
office;
artillery, engineering, inspection, provisions, commissariat, medical and auditing departments;
military-scientific committee, military topographical depot and military printing house, which are part of the so-called special regulations.
The role of land units during all wars without exception, in which Russia (the USSR) participated, is difficult to overestimate. The heroism and courage of Russian (Soviet) soldiers is a bright palette of Russian history, praised in the writings of writers, poets, musicians and artists of various eras. “Borodino” by M.Yu. Lermontov, “War and Peace” by L.N. Tolstoy, these are realistic paintings by M. Samsonov, K. Vasiliev, A. Lopukhov, this is the soulful poetry of Konstantin Simonov and Alexander Twardovsky, this is the Leningrad Symphony by Dmitry Shostakovich. And after all, this is only a small part of that huge layer of art that is dedicated to the staunchness of the Russian soldier and the desire for self-sacrifice.
Returning to the history of the troops celebrating their holiday today, it must be said that for the first time the main military command directly by the Ground Forces was formed after the Great Patriotic War. Such a formation took place in March 1946. The first commander in chief of the Ground Forces was Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov, who at the same time held the post of deputy head of the USSR Armed Forces.
But for a long time in the post of the Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces, Zhukov failed to work. Already in June of the same 1946, Zhukov was removed from his post and sent to the commanders in the Odessa Military District. At the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces G.K.Zhukov was replaced by Marshal of the Soviet Union Ivan Konev. The last Commander-in-Chief of the Land Forces of the USSR and at the same time the first - of Russia - was Vladimir Semenov, who was in this position from September 1991 through 11 in April 1997.
Today, the Ground Forces is one of the three branches of the Russian Armed Forces. The most numerous and diverse. The composition of the troops includes five arms, which include: motorized infantry troops, tank troops, missile forces and artillery, air defense troops (as a structural part of the Ground Forces), special forces. The Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces is Colonel General Oleg Salyukov. It was he who commanded the Victory Parade on Red Square on May 9, 2014.
The team of "Military Review" congratulates all our readers who are directly related to the Ground Forces on the holiday. Let this day be the simple dreams of every person wearing or wearing shoulder straps of a tanker, rocket, infantryman, artilleryman. Today is an excellent reason to remember your army comrades, to contact them, to congratulate you on the holiday and to wish you good health. Today, and a special occasion to remember those combat friends who are no longer with us. They certainly deserve that today we raise a “glass of tea” in memory of them, in memory of people who have contributed to the future of Russia.
Happy holiday, Ground Forces!
