Military Review

Shortest war

The 1866 war was the last in which the Germans killed the Germans. Until now, in Germany, with the greatest reluctance, they recall these seven bloody weeks without beer.

Shortest war

The Germans are against the Germans. Attack of the Prussian Guard on the Austrian artillery position. The pressure of the King of Prussia’s infantry brought her victory in 1866 near Koeniggrätz.

Honestly: it’s harder and harder to “console” history. Everything that I predicted comes true. Or almost everything. He repeatedly warned that it is simply deadly for Ukraine to change the power in the state by force, and not during elections. Do not understand this in the South and East. They will be indignant. But changed! And precisely by force. On the blood.

He spoke both verbally and in writing that the consequence of the pro-Western political course and the so-called “Euro-Association” would be for Ukraine a terrible economic collapse and a rise in prices for everything from gasoline and rents. And today only the beginning of this painful process. Enough for three years at least. Until we reach the bottom of the crisis. So what? Someone sobered up?

He wrote that the conflict in the Donbass has no military solution. Sit down, negotiate. Just do not kill. Do not start a fire. Who listened to me? Instead, the Kiev government sent brigades into battle, hoping to take Donetsk on Independence Day. And claimed that there is no one to negotiate. And now the corpses are being taken from there by the hundreds. And no one will return neither sons nor husbands.

But if we agree on the exchange of prisoners, then why cannot we agree on all other issues?

Let's honestly admit: today Ukraine possesses a minimum of independence. In all senses. In the economy - a complete dependence on loans from the West. In politics - no one at Bank Step will step without agreeing on his position with the US Embassy. And for the States, a quick solution to the “Ukrainian issue” is not a priority. On the contrary. I think that they have long been looking for a country where it is possible to kindle an internal conflict after Iraq, Libya and Syria. Then to "help" her out of trouble, supplying coal for power plants, fuel assemblies for nuclear power plants, advisers for the army, etc.

And such a country was found! Yes, even by the side of Russia. A country with greedy oligarchs, naive people trustingly listening to the “shusters” on TV and a bunch of contradictions that are convenient to incite. Yes, even by the side of Russia. What a pleasure it was to tease the Russian bear with it in a den! And teased. And the bear stirred. And intervened, supporting the DNI and LC. Now, at least, call them “self-proclaimed”, even ask Aunt Ashton (already dismissed from the post of EU foreign minister) to have more cookies, and around rifts and unrest. Not in the UK, where this Ashton is from, but here in Ukraine. In every yard.

Franz Joseph considered the Prussians "separatists." Berlin was once subordinate to Vienna. War clarified terms

ROOT ALL TROUBLE. If you find the root cause of what is happening, it turns out that he is in a damaged relationship between Kiev and Moscow. Official Kiev and official Moscow. This is Putin’s conflict as a spokesman for the interests of Russian imperialism and the Ukrainian oligarchs, who, after Yanukovych’s removal by force, preferred the role of compradors to the American imperialism, not considering all the risks of service to the geopolitical West on the very border with the geopolitical East. (If anyone has forgotten the meaning of the word "comprador", I recall. This is, by classical definition, "the conciliatory part of the national bourgeoisie in economically backward countries, cooperating with foreign capital in the domestic and foreign markets.") The classic comprador prefers to extort capital from their countrymen where anywhere in Guinea or Ukraine, and live in London or Lausanne, occasionally visiting former compatriots in their comprador “land”, where its managers are sitting - “menager”, in modern slang.

Now this Russian-Ukrainian conflict seems to be “eternal”. The words “war between Ukraine and Russia” are heard on TV every now and then. But officially there is no war. There is no martial law. Goods from Russia continue to flow to Ukraine, and from Ukraine to Russia. And if you received a subpoena from the military registration and enlistment office and you put it under your pillow, then the maximum that threatens you is an administrative penalty in the 51 hryvnia. And then only in the event that the military registration and enlistment office sues you, loses both the first and second instances, and the court’s decision after long delays finally takes effect. Moreover, the military enlistment office is unlikely to sue you, as there are no relevant legal services and lawyers. It is easier for the military registration and enlistment office to throw a new portion of the summons to other citizens - legally less literate. This is the legal reality of our life with you, despite the fact that in the East completely real people are dying - and those who live there, having their own opinion on what is happening, and those who are gathered there from all over Ukraine, after changing their clothes in camouflage “oak tree” officially adopted in the MAT.

ESTO FROM THIS EXIT? Maybe he is in that historical moment, when every day, in spite of everything, paid propagandists and evil political clowns try to kindle in us the most base passions and convince us that the most “intelligent” for us is to grab hold of weapon and go kill someone "for the idea." And for them - to sit down again with Shuster and discuss new methods of voluntary suicide for millions of naive citizens of Ukraine, whom I personally love, despite all their differences in political views and place of residence.

Here you begin to unfold the yellowed pages of historical chronicles. And look for recipes in them out of our crisis. Or at least consolation.

Surely, you reader have heard at least something about the Hundred Years, Thirty Years and Seven Years Wars. Someone in childhood was hounded by history at school, and he had at least something stuck in his memory. And someone even read Valentin Pikul's Pen and Sword. Or, which is much less likely, is Friedrich Schiller's Wallenstein. So you have some idea of these long and debilitating armed conflicts. And even the one who does not read books, and in history lessons he sleeps or spits in the ear of his neighbor with a chewed paper ball from a tube, even from the very name of the war he understands: Seven-year-old is a long time. These are almost two Great Patriotic! A Hundred Years - just scary to imagine! This year, for example, marks the beginning of the First World War. She, as you know, when our great-grandfathers began - in 1914. Many at least remember the name of his great-grandfather? That's the same ... And if you imagine that the war stretched under grandfather, grandfather, dad, and me, and even the son and son-in-law managed to make war in it, then this is the Centenary and run. All wars of war! Well her to the demon. We do not need such a war! This, as they say, is not our war.

But there is a war, about which, I vouch, you have not even heard. With a beautiful and, in general, acceptable for a normal person name - Seven-week. If I can say so about such a godless phenomenon as war. All sorts of "political technologists" do not like to talk about it, so as not to embarrass simple minds. And then the people will begin to ask the rulers: you have been forcing us here for years to fight, torment, scoff, but there are other, so to speak, positive examples! They mobilized, gathered, reached the theater of military operations, performed all the feats that were necessary, and after only seven weeks (less than two months!) They were already sitting at home and drinking beer. And much better than today, as it was in the XIX century, and no pasteurisation existed yet.

The 1866 war was remembered by the Germans for the first time that Oktoberfest disappeared.

BROTHER PICTURES. This war took place in the distant 1866 year between two brotherly German states - Prussia and Austria. You will not deny that the Austrians and Germans are brothers? This is an obvious fact. Their language is the same, although the pronunciation is different. In Vienna - Viennese, soft. In Berlin - Berlin, with North German rigidity. Some even deny the existence of Germans and Austrians as different nations altogether. They say that it is one people. Just living in two different states. But in one common Germanic world. In one German civilization.

History seems to confirm this opinion too. All the Middle Ages and almost all of the New Time Austrians and Germans lived in one great power - the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation. Only in the Napoleonic era eliminated it. And finally wound up - a mutually independent kingdom of Prussia with the capital in Berlin and the Austrian Empire with the capital in Vienna.

Prussia and Austria had a common patriotic myth in the past - a joint war against Napoleon. For them it was almost like the Great Patriotic War for us. At the beginning of the century before last, Napoleon inflicted several painful defeats on the Germans and Austrians, concluded derogatory treaties with them. Simply put, he did not put them into anything, like any racketeer who manages to break through to the very top of the state. And he, if we discard polite, and was just such a Corsican racketeer. But Austria and Prussia thought better of it, concluded an alliance with Russia and Great Britain, put it in the general international company for Napoleon, and again became “great” powers.

FOR CUSTOMS UNION. By 1866, this “greatness” into two fraternal countries was missed. They zazhralis. The Prussian brand and the Austrian krone stood firmly. Famously, the mustaches of King William of Prussia at the Potsdam grenadiers curled upwards, and they also resolutely rose at the famous Deutschmaster (soldier of the elite Viennese regiment) of Emperor Franz Joseph. And so, and others wanted to make war. If not with the French, then at least with each other.

In addition, the Seven-week war had one more reason. The most important is economic. The rapidly developing Prussia dreamed of gathering all German states (hold on tight!) In ... the Customs Union. No wonder they call in the West Putin, who has long worked in Germany, “a German in the Kremlin”. He certainly knows German history, unlike the overwhelming majority of Ukrainians and Russians. And even some Germans. I am sure that Putin began to assemble his own Customs Union with a clear eye on its historical counterpart - the trade interstate association that Prussia Bismarck, the chancellor of Prussia, had made together in the middle of the 19th century.

True, in Austria they believed that the Bismarck Customs Union does not collect and does not even hammer off. In Vienna, they loved to repeat that Bismarck was driving him into it. It drives “poor” Bavaria (analogous to our Belarus), “unfortunate” Saxony (something like German Kazakhstan) and “small” Armenia (let's replace it with, say, the then completely independent kingdom of Württemberg with its capital in the glorious city of Stuttgart and RED BLACK flag of two horizontal stripes).

And in general, between Vienna and Berlin, then somehow "overdue." Boiling hot. Mutual irritation has accumulated. The Berliners contemptuously believed that Vienna was inhabited by pampered Southerners — loafers and sybarites. And the crowns laughed at the Berliners for their ambition and the desire to command everything in the Germanic world. Although, let's say honestly, apart from ambitiousness, rising beer froth over glasses, Prussia also had a businesslike character, which then Austria, really able to relax, was clearly lacking.

One and a half million mobilized. The war broke out unexpectedly 17 June 1866 of the year. Both sides were counting on blitzkrieg. Already began the time of massive armies. By mobilization, Prussia put 664 thousand people under the gun. The Austrians called for almost as much. For the first time in history, troops moved to the theater of operations by rail, rather than on foot. True, this mainly concerned the Prussians, not the Austrians. Careless Vienna did not have time to develop the transport network necessary for the war. And the guns of the Austrians were worse. Their threaded nozzles were charged from the barrel. And at the Prussians breech-loading rifles were already in service. Where more rapid-fire.

But the newspapers vied with each other to fan military hysteria, raising their "spirit." And if we take into account that both countries were already distinguished by a high level of literacy (and the population of the capitals of the two warring “fraternal” states could read and write almost without exception), you can imagine what boiling point the state of minds has reached! Austria hated Prussia as a fiend of Hell. Because it was weaker. And, therefore, hysterical. And Prussia considered Austria to be a “traitor” of the all-German cause. But as a stronger party, she kept her newspaper writers on a short leash. It seemed that mutual hatred would never subside.

Bismarck: “If we do not assume that we have conquered a whole world, then we will achieve peace, which is worth the effort”

20 000 KILLED IN A DAY. Everything was decided by the battle at Königgrätz 3 July - just two weeks after the start of the war. To be exact, exactly after 15 days. 215 Thousands of Austrians with 770 guns clashed with 221 Thousands of Prussians who had 900 guns. These are huge numbers. For comparison, I will say that the whole grouping of the Ukrainian army in the Donbass never exceeded 30 000 people. Losses were no less impressive. Around 9000, thousands of Prussia soldiers were killed and wounded in the fields near Königgrets. In just one day of battle. And at the then level of field surgery, not many had a chance to survive after injury. The Austrians suffered even greater losses - 22 thousand dead, wounded and missing. That is also the dead. Plus - the same number of prisoners! It seemed that nothing could tighten this bleeding wound. Only the attack of the Austrian cavalry, which covered the retreat, saved the honor of the army of Franz Joseph.

On that day, the proud Austria suffered a crushing defeat. The road to Vienna was open. The Prussian generals advised Bismarck to do just that - to take the capital of the enemy and pass on it with a parade step. Moreover, the evacuation of the imperial court and ministries was already under way there. But the "Iron Chancellor" chose another - negotiations. After all, all the same nations were fraternal. No matter what. And the battlefield was littered with corpses of people who perfectly understood the language of each other during their lifetime.

Immediately after the battle, Bismarck sat down and wrote to his wife: "Our business is going well ... If our claims are not exaggerated, and we do not assume that we have won a whole world, then we will reach a world worth these efforts."

RETURN "OKTOBERFEST". On July 26, peace was concluded between the two countries. The same German fast as the war. The Austrian regiment “Deutschmaster” (translated as “The Best in Germany”) received a unique distinction for bravery in this short-term campaign - the right to have not one like everyone else, but two (!) Regimental flags. First, because the Deutschmeister fought really well, unlike many Austrians. And, secondly, because the vanquished always exaggerate their heroism. This is the rule of any war lost. But the press on both sides of the border for a long time called that war as “fratricidal”. In general, until today, this is the most unpopular war in Austria and Germany. Some kind of misunderstanding. A shame. The fact that the brothers are unpleasant to remember, like a drunken brawl in beer mugs. And who would have thought then, in distant 1866, that in two world wars both the Austrians and the Germans would become brothers in arms? Yes, no one! You would just laugh at you, say such things on the battlefield of Königgrätz!

But do you know how the Germans remember the Seven-week War? Do not believe it. Like the one for which Oktoberfest has almost never been held in Bavaria - the beer festival. Because of the ill-fated war (and Bavaria fought on the side of Austria) no one reached him. Although the world has already been concluded. Just the mood was not. But a year later, Oktoberfest was again. And the Bavarians, Prussians and Austrians drank on it. Together. Because a person loves ordinary beer and holidays anyway, more than war and a bloody feast.

They became brothers, because the overseas trash ended its civilian life and did not represent anything. Yes, and the media were not so corrupt.

History allows you to take the right steps, but only who teaches it and knows how to apply it now? - Political technologists who live by the principle: After us at least a flood.
National patriots, for whom their people and state are "chosen". Liberals, for whom the homeland went to sleep there.
I hope that common sense and humanity will prevail in the minds! However, there is very little hope.

37 years of fighting, and between them negotiations, armistice, etc. In total, almost 100 years, and it turned out that England and France were at war. The Prussians in this war simply took away the leadership from the Austrians in the German Union, which existed well before this confrontation, and Bismarck was a representative of Prussia there for a long time.

Yes! Quickly people forget the spilled krovushka even their own, even alien. Germany is generally strange. In the allies of the United States, Britain and France. Japan, the country that took the blow of 2 nuclear bombings, is allied with the United States! I don’t understand anything! Are they all crazy? Or: in war as in war? I don’t understand anything ... And I don’t understand, because I am Russian. And my memory is very good ...

I like the position of Olesya. But there is a slight difference in comparison with today's situation. And this is not even a small, but a huge difference. Who was the United States at the time?
If the United States did not meddle and lead the outskirts, Russia and Ukraine would have long agreed.
If Oles reads comments let him answer

If the author draws an analogy with the "post-Soviet space", then it is not clear why he does not mention such an "analogue" of the CIS, as created in 1815. German Confederation (Deutscher Bund), or otherwise, the Union of German States, which, along with Prussia and Austria, included several dozen German states and free cities. The amalgamation was extremely heterogeneous. For example, the Customs Union formed on its territory in 1834 included just over half of the members of the Union of German States.
By the way, being a consistent supporter of the idea of reunification of German lands, Bismarck was a staunch opponent of the adoption of the multinational Austrian Empire in the Customs Union.
In June 1866 Bavaria, Saxony, Württemberg, Hanover and Baden refused to participate in the mobilization declared by Prussia and thus sided with Austria. In August of that year, the German Union ceased to exist. .

I am from Kaliningrad, the center of Prussianism, for the Germans it is something like an analogue of Novgorod land. The Prussian phenomenon is based on the synthesis of several ethnic groups, Polab Slavs, the German immigrants and the Germanized Prussians (people of the Lithuanian language group), it was this alloy that gave a passionate push that created Germany .

It can be added that until now from the thoroughly forgotten German Confederation, one "fragment" remains, very small, but completely independent.
This is the principality of Liechtenstein, the same one whose football team was defeated yesterday by the Russian national team.
