September 4 - Nuclear Specialist Day
The work on the creation of the first atomic bomb in our country began immediately two departments - the military and the nuclear industry. In this case, the main task of the Special Section of the General Staff was the preparation and conduct of tests of new weapons. The main result of this department’s activity was the creation in a very short time of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, on which 29 August 1949 had already been carried out, the first atomic bomb tests in the USSR that put an end to Washington’s nuclear monopoly.
Since that day, 715 various nuclear tests have been conducted in our country. The last nuclear explosion on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago thundered on 24 on October 1990 of the year. The ideology of the Soviet Union believed that the development of nuclear weapons in a country ravaged by the Great Patriotic War was an example of the concentration of material, intellectual and spiritual resources. The name of nuclear physicist Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov, one of the fathers of the hydrogen bomb, is known to many. At the same time, Sakharov became famous not only for his scientific achievements in the field of developing nuclear weapons, but also for his criticism. He wrote and spoke a lot, talking about the destructive power of the military atom, as well as the non-use of such weapons to destroy entire cities.
In many respects, the Chernobyl disaster helped to revise the existing stereotypes in the field of nuclear security. In connection with the need to tighten control over compliance with nuclear safety requirements in the USSR Ministry of Defense, a new organizational structure was created - the Nuclear Safety Inspectorate. Also in the context of the Chernobyl disaster that took place in 1986, one should also consider the creation in our country of the professional rescue service of the 12 General Directorate of the Ministry of Defense.
At present, our country has an impressive nuclear arsenal, which consists of land-based ICBMs - stationary and mobile-based intercontinental ballistic missiles, as well as sea and aviation strategic nuclear weapons and their delivery vehicles. At the same time, the strategic nuclear forces are constantly being modernized and updated as part of the state armaments program being implemented in our country, calculated until 2020. All this makes it possible to ensure the preservation in the country of key basic nuclear technologies, scientific, technical and personnel potential of organizations that are part of the structure of Rosatom, as well as to ensure the further strengthening and development of the nuclear shield of Russia.
Today, nuclear weapons continue to be a means of global deterrence and stability on Earth. The only possible alternative to nuclear weapons, as a means of achieving equilibrium in the world, would be a regime of complete trust and openness between countries, the elimination of existing military-political blocs, and the general and complete prohibition of nuclear weapons and developments in this direction. But all this is a very distant prospect for the development of our society, which may never be achieved, which means that nuclear weapons will still play their part.
Today, it is still of great importance, especially for Russia. Nuclear weapons demonstrate the power of our country to the whole world and serve as a guarantor of its security. In any large-scale military conflict, the presence and power of existing nuclear weapons may be an advantage for one of the parties. For this reason, both in Russia and the United States much attention is paid to the development of nuclear weapons. Particular emphasis today is on improving the weight and size characteristics of nuclear charges.
At the same time, the development of nuclear weapons was accompanied by tests. The tests were carried out with a specific purpose - they allowed to obtain the maximum amount of information that was later used by engineers to refine and improve their models. However, nuclear tests have never been safe. They managed to cause great harm to the environment, as well as to the health of people in the areas in which they were carried out, as well as located in close proximity to them. At the same time, the danger is also a peaceful atom, we all remember the Chernobyl accident, which occurred during tests at nuclear power plants and eventually claimed thousands of lives.
Nevertheless, nuclear weapons continue to play a huge role in the modern world, it has been and remains a prerequisite for maintaining the combat capability of the Russian Federation. And this means that the need for nuclear specialists who are responsible for the storage, operation and protection of our nuclear arsenal is still very high. September 4 in Russia honors nuclear safety specialists, celebrations are held in military units and award procedures distinguished, service veterans are remembered and they perpetuate the memory of the victims.
