KAC Revolver Rifle sniper rifle (USA)

To solve various specific tasks for designers weapons Often you have to resort to non-trivial solutions. As a result, they have the original appearance systems that fully meet the requirements of the customer, but are surprising specialists and weapon lovers. An excellent example of such weapons can be considered a Revolver Rifle sniper rifle, developed by the American company Knight's Armament Co. (KAC) in the late eighties.

The reason for the start of the development of this weapon was the request of US security officials who wanted to get a new sniper system. To perform tasks so-called. police sniper special forces needed a rifle with a set of certain characteristics. The security forces wanted weapons with a range of up to 100-200 meters, the ability to reload quickly, a minimum loudness of a shot and can effectively hit "soft targets." An important requirement of the customer was the possibility of maintaining the pickup after the shot.

The gunsmiths from KAC accepted this challenge and began to study the perspectives of various small arms systems. The requirements relating to the firing range, the striking effect and the loudness of the shot made it possible to quickly and easily identify some of the main features of the new weapon. Other customer requirements, which determined the accuracy and the possibility of making several shots in a row without losing aiming, became a rather serious task, over which I had to break my head.

KAC Revolver Rifle sniper rifle (USA)

Probably, the designers of KAC argued in a similar way: the use of vapor or any other automatics that use the energy of powder gases reduces the accuracy of firing, since the moving parts of the weapon begin to shift even before the bullet leaves the barrel. Manual reload, in turn, does not provide the required rate of fire. The only suitable system in this case turned out to be a revolving. She allowed to provide the required rate of fire, as well as eliminate the influence of moving parts of the weapon on the process of a shot. Thanks to the revolving scheme, the new sniper rifle was called Revolver Rifle.

To reduce the volume of the shot were applied several interesting ideas. The barrel rifle equipped with an integrated silencer expansion type. However, the use of a revolving drum threatened to break the gas through the junction of the barrel and chamber. To solve this problem, a new cartridge based on the standard .44 Magnum ammunition was created. According to reports, this cartridge was proposed to equip with gunpowder, giving the lowest possible flash. In addition, in the cartridge was used a scheme with so-called. locking the powder gases: at the moment of the shot, the bullet pushes the special piston-wad, which, after the bullet leaves the cartridge, clogs the neck of the latter and prevents the gases from escaping.

As a basis for the “firing part” of the KAC Revolver Rifle rifle, the Ruger Redhawk revolver was chosen in the version for the .44 Magnum cartridge, which underwent some modifications. Native barrel weapons replaced 10-inch (254 mm). Since the rifle's bullet had an initial speed of about 300 m / s, the barrel received cuts with a pitch of just 9 inches (228,6 mm). Such steep grooves were made to ensure the necessary speed of rotation of the bullet in flight.

A relatively long multi-chamber silencer when assembling weapons was mounted on the barrel and fixed with the help of fixings in the breech. In the rear of the muffler there was room for the trunk, which reached approximately to its middle. In front of the silencer, there were partitions designed to further reduce shot noise.

It should be noted that the available descriptions of the KAC Revolver Rifle rifle raise some questions. The fact is that the simultaneous use of a cartridge with gas locking and a multi-chamber silencer looks like an excess measure. Silencers of this type are designed to hold and gradually cool the powder gases, and in a sniper rifle from Knight's Armament Co. combustion products of the propellant remained inside the liner. The reasons for such a strange feature of the weapon are unknown. Perhaps there is some kind of error in the available tool descriptions.

The revolver retained a six-chamber drum and single-action firing mechanism with a characteristic protruding trigger. The handle of the revolver received attachments for the butt. Under the barrel attached handguard. The stock and handguard were made of plastic. For ease of use rifle on the forearm were attachments for folding bipod. Above the drum and barrel there were mounts for sights. According to reports, the optical Leupold Vari-X was proposed as the main sight, which, if necessary, could be complemented with a Simrad KN 250 night vision device. There was also an open sight mounted above the drum and a front sight on the muzzle of the muffler.

The weapon turned out relatively compact and light. The length of the assembled rifle was equal to 36,5 inches (927,1 mm), weight - 8,5 pounds (3,8 kg). At the same time, the weapon made it possible to reliably hit targets at ranges up to 200 meters. The rifle was supplied unassembled in a special case, which made it possible to conveniently transport weapons and quickly prepare them for use.

The layout of the elements of the rifle in the case

During the tests on the 100 range, several shots were placed in a circle with a diameter of no more than 2 inches (about 5 cm). Interesting results showed noise measurement weapons. The total volume of the shot, when measured in close proximity, did not exceed 119 dB. In this case, the loudness of the hammer strike in an unloaded weapon was 112 dB, and the muzzle wave produced no more than 7 dB noise. Thus, at a distance of several tens of meters, the sound of a shot was almost indistinguishable, and the absence of a flash completely hid the position of the shooter.

KAC Revolver Rifle revolving sniper rifle was developed by order of American intelligence services, because of which many aspects of this project are still unknown. For this reason, there is no information about the purchase of a rifle by police or military special forces, and even more about the facts of its use. In the mid-nineties, the KAC Revolver Rifle rifle reached the civilian arms market. A number of such systems have expanded the collection of lovers of small arms.

The KAC Revolver Riffle sniper rifle was based on a number of technical solutions that are almost not found in modern small arms of this class. Nevertheless, it was the original approach to the creation of weapons that allowed the designers of Knight's Armament Co. develop an interesting sample that fully meets the requirements of the customer. As for the secrecy of some information about this rifle, it can be considered as a kind of confirmation of the effectiveness and success of the development. The lack of public information can speak about the active use of the KAC Revolver Riffle rifle in various secret operations that will be declassified only in the future.

And the bullets are not self-guided? A flaw, however. Not everything is simple with a gyroscope. There is such a thing called "precession". When you try to turn the barrel to the left - to the right, it "takes" up or down, depending on the direction of rotation.

The original solution, a bit like our VSS, - the caliber is larger, the range is less than that of a massively "conventional" sniper rifle.

Advantages of this revolver-gun - low price, simplicity of construction, combined with a small firing range!
Just for the poorly trained fighters of the countries of the "third" world, who want a "cool" weapon of "special forces", but there is no money or people!

The gas cutoff in the sleeve of this unit was clearly not. But a special cuff that covers the gap between the barrel and the drum at the time of the shot was most likely. Such a scheme works for itself on revolving air guns.

Why wasn’t it? At the SP3 cartridge, the rod comes out, with such a thing the drum will not turn, and in the SP4 the pusher rod does not go outside, with such a cartridge a revolving circuit is possible.

Firstly, because it is impossible to disperse a heavy bullet to 44m / s over the length of a standard .300Magnum sleeve. Secondly, as a respected author logically remarked, when cutting off gases in a liner, an external silencer is absolutely unnecessary, as well as a long barrel.

The air that the bullet pushes out of the barrel in front of it also makes a quite tangible sound. So it is "swallowed" by the expansion muffler. Why is this? Why not? He copes with the task quite well, he climbed into the weight and dimensions, there is a worked-out production process, why reinvent the wheel again? Moreover, due to the specifics of the application, the barrel clearly needs additional protection. Anyway, make a casing, well, the muffler will work for them, since it is somewhat redundant for the main task.

For systems with a cutoff of powder gases, the trunk is by and large an excess. The only reason he needs it is to direct the bullet. Its length in this case should not exceed the stroke of the pusher. Accordingly, the air column in it is minimal and the sound wave created by it (especially when you consider that the bullet moves with a known subsonic speed) is practically absent. So the presence of a silencer only says that a conventional cartridge is used, without any cutoff of the powder gases.

The barrel is the main part of any type of small arms and not overkill as it seemed to you, and without a barrel you will not be able to hit the target exactly. This is obvious!

Who is obvious? Barrelless systems quite existed and perfectly exist. And it’s quite a fall.
The barrel, as a part of a firearm, serves to give the projectile direction of motion and transform the chemical energy of the combustion of gunpowder into the kinetic energy of the projectile. Now let's see how the weapon works with the cutoff of powder gases in the sleeve. Here, it’s just obvious that the expansion of powder gases occurs only in the volume of the sleeve, the barrel behind the chamber is not involved in this process. It is also obvious that the acceleration is transmitted to the projectile only at a distance equal to the travel of the pusher. It follows: the barrel for a weapon firing ammunition with gas cutoff, longer than the pusher stroke is useless, moreover, it is harmful, because it resists the movement of the projectile.

Perhaps everything is simpler: a standard cartridge and a special one are used. When using the standard, the muffler works for its intended purpose, with a special cartridge, it has a decorative or protective function.
By the way, there is one more contradiction in the article: special gunpowder with a minimal flash and gas locking in the sleeve. Nonsense however.

Probably, KAC designers argued in this way: the use of gas exhaust or any other automation that uses the energy of powder gases reduces the accuracy of shooting, since the moving parts of the weapon begin to move before the bullet leaves the barrel. Manual reloading, in turn, does not provide the required rate of fire.

At the expense of reduced accuracy, this, of course, is complete nonsense. But the lack of clank of automation, like unmasking, may well be.

Nonsense, this is about the movement of parts BEFORE the bullet takes off (but only for systems with exhaust gases, other automation schemes really suffer from such a drawback) .. but the bending moment on the barrel, in the systems with exhaust gas - there is still a place to be.
But in general, the system turned out to be very niche and is really only for police use.

Firstly, the trigger mechanism of the Ruger Red Hawk is not single, as it is written in the article, but self-cocking or as it is customary to say recently of double action, and secondly, what kind of speed can this hybrid of a rifle and revolver have if you need to cock the trigger manually before each shot? single and double action are translated from English. Single action or Single action is applicable to non-self-cocking revolvers, that is, such a gun must be cocked by hand before each shot. And self-cocking revolvers and eyut designation Double actction.Tak's Red Hawk belongs to the second type!

In Russia, too, weapons of various calibers are missing. The Kalashnikov assault rifle has 7,62mm and 5,45mm, in addition to versions for NATO and hunting ammunition. SVD (SVDK, SVK) - 7,62mm, 9,3mm and 6mm. Special calibres from 9mm and above. All that is needed is.

.458 SOCOM in the US is also not the limit for AR-like. For the .308 Win (AR-10) lover, there is a .50 Beowulf cartridge in the USA. And from small calibers there are versions of AR-15 in caliber .17 (4,5mm) and .22 (5,6mm). But in service in the United States for "AR-shaped" so far adopted cartridges of calibers .223Rem and .308Win. The rest of the calibers are either commercial or experimental.

I see no problems in creating a new caliber in either Russia or the United States. If necessary for the army, then it will be created.

American "hunting" revolvers chambered for .44 Magnum with 8 "-10" barrels allow aimed fire at a range of up to 200 m. To install additional sighting devices in such revolvers, special strips are used above the barrel. Notable models: Smith-Wetson model 629 and Ruger model Red Hawk.

In America, hunting with such revolvers is allowed and popular. The .44 Magnum cartridge allows you to kill any large predator found in the North. America and even a grizzly bear. The first revolvers under this cartridge (Smith-Wetson model 29) were advertised just as a weapon of self-defense for traveling to remote areas of North.

In addition to the optical sight, the KAC Revolver Rifle also used the butt with the fore-end, making the sniper rifle an actual rifle for firing at short distances. Everything is very American.

Today in America, hunting revolvers are produced under even more powerful cartridges than the .44 Magnum. For example, Smith-Wetson model 500 under the cartridge .500 S&W Magnum, according to the assurances of the developers, has a sufficient stopping effect even against a large grizzly bear:

Drumguns from the 1860s and 1900s seem to be more sophisticated. In the 1980s, modularity had not yet become "fashionable", so they probably did not come up with a whale that would turn every suitable revolver into such a rifle.

The ideal weapon for killers and those groups that are engaged in the elimination of especially valuable customers, performing their operations in the most unexpected places.
Of interest is the simultaneous installation of day and night (thermal imaging) sights.
This trunk was declassified because it was ineffective for the purposes for which it was created.
Because especially valuable clients also do not slurp their soup and do everything possible to ensure their safety.
After this declassification procedure, the rifle can be ordered by special police units for anti-terrorism or private "amateurs" for a lot of money.

Damn, in order to understand how it works, it was enough to look at the first link in Google, so no, at first the author was too lazy to figure it out, and then the rest of the controversy spread over the cutoff!
It's simple, the revolver is re-positioned under the barrel of .30 caliber with a pitch of 228 mm, the cartridge itself is a standard 44 magnum sleeve which houses a .30 caliber bullet weighing 9,5 g, but the whole thing is that the bullet is placed in an aluminum sleeve that has an external diameter equal to 44 plus also has rubber o-rings, this whole stray works as follows - when fired, the sleeve is tightly pressed by pressure to the hemp of the barrel and the gases, respectively, drive the bullet into the barrel and subsequently expand and cool in an integrated muffler. Those. it is not a cut-off, but a sleeve providing obturation. from something like this.

This crap was created for police operations, the task was to get the most silent system with an effective firing range of up to 100m with the possibility of quickly firing a second shot, so the revolver circuit was not chosen by chance - semiautomatic devices produce too much noise (or rather, automatic work) and the cartridges with cut-off do not have of such range and accuracy, and here the SERIAL revolver is taken as a basis so that this SMALL-PIECE wunderwafer turned out with quite an adequate price than this PIECE of crap entirely m rivet from scratch. And what kind of victims the comrade is talking about is absolutely not clear.

The rifle turned out to be complicated, which means it will often fail for a long time.

Why such profound conclusions? A revolver is just more reliable than semiautomatic devices, since it is wedged, not sent, etc. there is simply nothing there and in case of misfire it is enough to press the trigger again.

The rifle had to "invent" its own cartridge, that if the shooter was found or something went wrong, the shooter died.

I don’t see absolutely any logical connection between the cartridge and the gunner’s death - why do you drink so tasty or smoke, I also want this!

In addition, where, if suddenly, take such special cartridges?

Read paragraph one and immediately everything will become clear.
PS By the way, we have created the SV-99 for the same tasks, only an American with his 7,62 bullet will still be more killed than the SV-99 with small things.

In X-files, such a pattern was highlighted.

What nonsense. And what about the revolver in the body kit is already becoming a sniper rifle? A similar kit and do for glock. and what also turns out a sniper rifle?
