According to RIA "News", with reference to the agency France-Presse, the former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was formally charged with corruption.
The ex-president was taken in for questioning on Tuesday morning. He was detained at the police station in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, and later in the evening he was taken to Paris to talk with the judge.
Sarkozy is accused of giving a bribe, concealing the fact of violation of professional secrets and using his official position for personal gain. In addition, the charges on the same items and on the fact of violation of professional secrecy are brought against the former lawyer of the ex-president Thierry Herzog. Also, the general lawyer of the Court of Cassation Gerard Azibere is also accused of passive “trading in influence” —the receipt of illegal benefits at the expense of someone else’s official position — and concealing the fact of violation of professional secrecy.
According to investigators, Sarkozy tried to obtain protected professional secret information through his lawyer Thierry Herzog during the hearings on the “case of Betancourt” about the illegal financing of his election campaign. For his part, the ex-president promised lawyer Gerard Azyber help in obtaining a judicial post in Monaco.
The investigating authorities became interested in Sarkozy in 2007, but until the 2012, he was immune.
