Pistol OZ-27 "Berdysh"

30
OTs-27 “Berdysh” is a Russian-developed pistol, created at TsKIB SOO (Central Design Bureau of Sports and Hunting weapons) Tula. The development of the gun was carried out in the early 1990-ies. The gun was originally designed for the needs of the Russian army and security forces. The famous gunsmiths I.Ya. Stechkin and B.V. Avraamov worked on a pistol. The first presentation of the OC-27 "Berdysh" was held in 1994 year. A feature of this gun was that it was equipped with a quick-detachable barrel, which made it possible to adapt the Berdysh to the use of several calibers at once: 7,62x25, 9x18 and 9x19 mm.

This sample of small arms was born as a result of research and development work on the creation of a military army pistol on the topic "Rook". The intention of the creators is to use 4 cartridges at once: 9x18 PM, 9x18 PMM, 7,62x25 TT and the popular 919 mm “Parabellum” cartridge from the West demanded an interesting solution - the implementation of a modular design. Alteration of a pistol under the use of the desired cartridge is carried out by the owner of the weapon, the process of replacing the barrel takes no more than 40 seconds.

As part of the work on the creation of a new pistol, a TKB-0220 pistol, developed jointly by Stechkin and Avrahamov, was presented at TsKIB SOO. However, this gun was withdrawn from the ongoing competition on the topic “Rook”. For this reason, in 1993, the new development was presented as a commercial or “police” model. The gun was finalized and received a new designation OT-27 "Berdysh" (OC in the name stands for "sample TsKIB"). In addition, this gun was also known under the designation PSA - the Stechkin - Avrahamov pistol. In 1996, this model was presented as a variant of the armament of the personnel of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

Automatic gun OTs-27 "Berdysh" operates through the use of recoil energy of a massive free gate. A spring-loaded recoil buffer was placed in the lower shoulder of the bolt, and a return spring was placed around the barrel of the gun. In the role of the stem gate stop serves its contactor, which is mounted in a frame. In general, compared with the older model of the Stechkin automatic pistol (APS), the OTs-27 had a simpler design, as well as slightly better ergonomics. At the same time, in the version chambered for the 9x19 mm “Parabellum”, it also exceeded the APS in power.

The design of this gun successfully combined simplicity with very practical and original solutions. Automatics of the trunk worked on the principle of recoil with a free gate. In the extreme forward position, the shutter-casing was held by a return spring placed on the barrel, as well as its own weight, locking the barrel bore. The barrel itself was made quick-detachable, the shooter could carry out its replacement directly in the field. The idea of using 7,62-mm caliber cartridges from a TT pistol in this pistol was based on good ballistic data and high penetration ability of the latter. In addition, this bullet had a shallow trajectory of flight, and the Soviet military depots were crowded with data of ammunition. At the time of creation of the OTs-27 “Berdysh”, the cartridge for PM was a standard pistol cartridge for Russian law enforcement agencies and the army. It remains so at the present time, gradually surrendering its positions to the cartridge 9x19 mm.

At the beginning of 1990, the Parabellum cartridge was already considered a promising replacement for the old PM cartridge, so the creators chose it as one of the options. Such a Russian patron received the designation 9х19 PSO. The initial bullet velocity for this cartridge was 350 m / s. At a distance of 25 meters, he could provide the next level of accuracy - a group of hits in a circle with a diameter of 100 mm. Due to the use of a wide chamber bevel on the pistol with an optimal angle of inclination, the OTs-27 pistol reliably delivered cartridges that were filled with expansive bullets of various designs. The set of a pistol should have included three interchangeable barrels at once.

In the inner front of the pistol casing, there is a device for damping the recoil of a shot, simply speaking a shock absorber made in the form of a polymer insert, as well as a buffer (steel rod), which is held by the fastening screw from the front edge of the casing. At the end point of the rollback, the buffer collides with the latch, reducing the shutter-casing speed. This is due to the absorption of the part of the energy formed at the time of the shot by the shock absorber. Such a decision extinguishes part of the recoil energy, prolonging the life of the weapon. Moreover, this rather simple design solution makes shooting from the OZ-27 pistol even more comfortable for the shooter, and also allows to increase the accuracy of shooting.

The shutter-casing lock mounted on the pistol, falling down when the pistol is disassembled, is located immediately in front of the trigger over the trigger guard. The ejector also plays the role of an indicator of the presence in the chamber of the cartridge, protruding beyond the surface of the shutter-casing, which helps the shooter to accurately determine the charge of the weapon, both by touch and visually. Release of the liner after the shot is carried out to the right and up.

The gun is equipped with a trigger type trigger, with a safety trigger, double action. Descent force when firing with a cocked hammer is approximately 2,5 kg, and when firing with a self-cocked - 6,5 kg. At the same time, the trigger stroke is quite short, smooth, with quite acceptable effort. Perhaps 2 version of shooting: with pre-cocking and self-cocking. Also, the OC-27 is equipped with a two-way flag safety lock, which, when turned on, blocks the trigger, the bolt and the drummer (the box is in the middle position). In this case, the trigger lock can be made both in the cocked and in the deflated position. A safe (without a shot) trigger release from a cocking can be performed by moving the safety catch up. After the trigger is pulled off, the flag automatically returns to the middle position (pistol on safety). The position of the safety flag down - the gun is ready to fire.

The frame of the pistol, as well as its casing bolt, is made entirely of alloy steel. Despite this, as well as not the smallest dimensions, the OC-27 "Berdysh" is not very heavy and has a great vitality. Its handle easily accommodates a two-row magazine with a small angle of inclination, which was done to ensure high reliability of the weapon. In this case, this solution provides control and very comfortable holding the gun when firing. At the base of the trigger guard is a two-way latch store.

There was also a version of the pistol, equipped with a special protrusion on the back surface of the handle, to which the stock could be attached. Gun OZ-27 has a very high service life. Nastra one of the prototypes of the gun was about 50 thousands of shots. In this case, all this time in the gun changed only the return spring, the drummer and the store. For storing and carrying a pistol with three trunks, the OTs-27 could be completed with a special diplomat. In case of incomplete disassembly of the gun, it is divided into the minimum number of parts. The gun is quick and easy to maintain, easy to clean, disassemble and reassemble.

The sight of the gun is constant, consists of simple unregulated rear sight and front sight. The rear sight has a fairly wide rectangular slot, and the front sight has a rectangular cross section. For the convenience of aiming at dusk and at night, special markers with a luminous compound are applied on the front and rear sights of the sight. The shape of the trigger guard ОЦ-27 is intended for shooting from two hands (the two-handed grip of the weapon is realized). Directly under the barrel of the gun there are guides designed for fastening various attachments. For example, here you can place a laser designator. Depending on the chosen caliber of bullets, the gun can be equipped with double-row box-shaped magazines of various capacities on 18 (9x18 PM) or 15 cartridges (7,62x25 mm).

For several reasons, this gun did not go into a wide series. At the same time, the gun is manufactured at KBP production facilities and is available in two versions: OTs-27 caliber 9x18 PM and OTs-27-2 caliber 9x19 "Parabellum". A small number of these pistols entered service with various units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia (private security), as well as special units of the FPS. Since 2006, the gun "Berdysh" is in service with the Russian prosecutor's office as a weapon of self-defense for investigators and prosecutors. In addition, since 2005, this gun is also a premium weapon (2 magazines and 36 cartridges are included with the gun).

If Stechkin himself put his hand to the pistol, then I would like to know the "number of reasons" why the pistol is not mass-produced.

I agree that in such articles IMHO more interesting reviews and just all sorts of reasons and not dry performance characteristics.

The reason the pistol is not mass-produced is its main feature, it is an easily replaceable barrel. A criminal armed with such a weapon will not even need to throw out a "wet" pistol, it is enough to install a new barrel, and you are white and fluffy.

Yes, the designers were not lucky with time - the height of the post-perestroika chaos. I read about this pistol in the first issue of the journal "Medved" in 90, and it was positioned as the first experience of I.Ya.Stechkin after his many years of work on the creation of ATGMs. And I liked Berdysh, that's why I remember it.

I had a chance to shoot with him, so in 1997-1998. The machine impressed: accuracy, accuracy, recoil is poorly felt, quite "grasping". And I didn't go, probably for a traditional reason - the price ...

And probably didn’t go, for the traditional reason - the price ...

It’s like with the GSh-18, if it is assembled individually, it’s expensive, but they don’t want to start normal serial production. And the fact that Stechkin was able to make a pistol under a powerful 7,62x25 with a free shutter is at least a state award pulls, or even a monument.

There is another very interesting specimen from the same developer OTs-33 Pernach.
And they don’t go into the series, I think, for the same reasons as removing the APS: How the gun is redundant, how the PP is insufficient.
Although I always liked the APS, and my father spoke of him as the best pistol.

It's just that the Izhevsk lobby turned out to be more influential. Those who personally fired from the OTs-27 respond only positively, all negative reviews are only from the "theoreticians", and there are not many of them. And the price depends on the cost, which is the lower, the larger the series. Stechkin died, his memory is blessed, and there was absolutely no one to promote the model. IMHO

Throughout the weapons world, it is customary to design pistol systems starting from 9x19 not with a free bolt, but with locking .... So there is nothing super-duper here ...
Free shutters are still possible on 9x18 and .38, as the power increases, the mass of the shutter must be increased and the weight of the gun becomes excessive ...

Successful pistols chambered for 9x19mm and similar pistols with a free breech are known in world practice. The army Campo-Giro and its later modifications Astra 400 and Astra 600 were in service with many countries and were produced from 1913 to 1950. Nomenclature of cartridges: М9х23mm, 9х19mm and 9х20mm. During the Second World War, in besieged Leningrad, a small batch of Baltiets free-action pistols under 7.62x25mm TT was manufactured, which was recognized as quite successful.
At present, the Hi-Point Firearms company produces and successfully sells in the USA a family of pistols and carbines with a free bolt for 9x19mm, 40SW, 45ACP cartridges. And although this weapon is positioned as very inexpensive and is made with the widest use of plastics and zinc alloys, it has lifetime warranty even in the event of a change of ownership. And independent tests showed tremendous survivability and good performance in accuracy and reliability

Do not compare the then 9x19 Pair and modern 9x19 NATO, they are different. A pistol-carbine can be equipped with a bolt of a large mass - this is not critical in this type of weapon. And there were only 14 Baltiys, and there is no need to talk about evaluating the pros and cons.

As I understand it, a gun can be equipped with three easily replaceable barrels (without changing the return spring? If not correct, correct)
How did TsKIB manage to make a free shutter for 3 different cartridges - it is unbelievable, because the most difficult thing is to choose the ratio of the mass of the shutter and the force of the return spring for this cartridge? Honor and praise be to them.

And if you slightly include the part of the brain responsible for the analytical thinking and attentiveness of reading the description, you can understand that there was no selection. The shutter and spring were matched by the least powerful cartridge, and the excess energy of a more powerful cartridge was extinguished

I don’t know how many hundreds of thousands of PMs there are in warehouses, but it’s time for them to sell, remake, recycle, etc. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has long needed a normal gun from which you are not afraid that the bullet will fly away half a meter from the target ...

You need to be able to shoot, that's all. Sorry, but I served in the Ministry of Internal Affairs for 15 years out of the 22 that I generally served. PM is a normal weapon that meets the requirements. Yes, it is not intended for shooting at 100 meters or more. But this is a gun, not a rifle. The gun is like a gun.

If the PM is not ushatanny, with a long spent resource of the barrel, then the problem is to put from 25 meters all the cartridges in the target’s envelope at all. But in fact the distance is even shorter.
Yes, any "SOBR", PM is certainly not comme il faut. And the district police, all sorts of patrolmen and other PMs are more than enough, so they will serve for a long time. Where it is not destructive power that is important, but reliability and small dimensions and weight of the PM will exist.

Technical data- Used cartridges: 9x18 mm PM, 9x18 mm PMM, 9x19 Par and 7,62x25 mm TT
If you use only 9 mm. cartridges, then yes. The right thing, but 7.62 - ???? We take a pistol in our hands and determine that 9 mm are needed for it. cartridges, and we have 7.62. And the cartridges are dumb. Or vice versa. So what??? Need to look for it. And they are not in the unit. The variety of ammunition is, it seems to me, the Achilles heel of this sample. There are not so many different cartridges in the army. Suppliers will sometimes find it difficult to search for them. So for specialists, it is possible, but massively is nonsense. ? .62 and 5.45 are now used for AK and what ???? And if they do not have the required caliber ??? All - "drain the water." One usable ammunition for the pistol and one for the submachine gun or machine gun - all. Otherwise, you can be left with a bunch of weapons for which there are no cartridges. Personal opinion-I do not impose ..

why, or rather, for whom was this pistol created? for the partisans? I'm surprised at the prosecutor's office, what did the PM not arrange for them to carry a kilogram fool (1,08 kg with cartridges) one and a half times larger in size? scoliosis to earn?))) By the way, I read that "Berdysh" lacks the rigidity of the barrel attachment, which reduces accuracy.

Well, yes, they were decently riveted for the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the 90s. It was a bit heavy with cartridges - there was almost no financing, there was a re-grading in the warehouses and I liked the gun very much so that it was possible to charge what was available.
Now there are no problems with cartridges in departments, and the peak of popularity has passed. Although overall a great gun, indestructible like the PM, the only one is heavy for constant wear.
