According to RIA "News", on Friday, the grand opening of a bronze monument to the heroes of the First World War, which was installed on the walls of the ancient fortification of Kaliningrad - the Astronomical Bastion. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Culture of Russia Vladimir Medinsky.

In Kaliningrad, a monument to the heroes of the First World War

“This is the first monument of this scale to the heroes of the First World War, which opens in our country. Celebrating the tragic date - the 100 anniversary of the beginning of the war - we start from the most western frontiers, from the place where fierce battles took place, which is also very symbolic, ”noted Medinsky.

According to unofficial data, in the territory of the Kaliningrad region there are almost a thousand graves of soldiers of the First World War.

The author of the monument is the famous sculptor, folk artist of Russia Salavat Shcherbakov. His work won second place in the competition announced by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation on the initiative of the Russian Military Historical Society. The monument to Andrei Kovalchuk, who won first place, will appear on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow in August.

According to Shcherbakov, the three five-meter figures on the 11-meter pedestal - a noble officer, a young man from raznochintsy and a peasant - personify the common contribution of the people to the protection of Russian interests.

The decision to open the monument in Kaliningrad was made as part of a workshop chaired by Medinsky. The Minister and Governor of the region, Tsukanov, first discussed this idea in November 2013.

A very correct decision, otherwise it’s a directly forgotten war. At school, it was only from the political side that they covered us. Imperialist, alien to class consciousness, etc. But Russia could have won it ...

We switched to you? As you want.

                As for the cons:
The fact that in the Soviet school they spoke of WWI primarily as an imperialist war, I agree with that. It was such and it was stupid to argue with that. But they did not forget about the exploits of our soldiers in WWII. I remember it perfectly, at least from the lessons where they talked about Chapaev, Budyonny, Zhukov and others. In any case, in that school in which I studied it was just that. Therefore, the statement Vadivak :

                Quote: Vadivak
Us at school her only from the political side and covered.

it is not true. If him в his school lit up PMV only from the political side, it’s probably not a very good history teacher. Perhaps you were unlucky with the teachers.

I correctly understood that you wrote this about the Civil War?

GV is still a big and painful topic, and speaking rudely about it, and the people who write about it are at least ugly. Well, or using your vocabulary - only a finished ram could write like that.

If you are interested in my opinion on GV - who was right there, who defended whose interests; in a nutshell it’s about the same as one famous person:

I open the book: S.S.Smirnov. Heroes of the Great War. Publishing House Molodaya Gvardiya, Moscow, 1977 - the episode "Marshal Soldier" opens with a photograph of a young cavalry officer, vice-non-commissioned officer G.K. Zhukov -
I quote: "Not without reason, invisible in the photograph, under the greatcoat on the chest of a young dragoon hang TWO St. George's crosses, earned in battles by courage and blood."

Completely parallels and analogies with today. There is Ukraine, the US, and the EU. In many respects everything grows from WW1. You can get rid of a number of illusions.

I fully support. Unfortunately, we now remember very little about this war, although there were many heroic episodes that fully justified the reputation of a Russian soldier. My great-grandfather fought in that war, was a knight of four St. George's crosses. And I want to put a small video of a very talented girl Vari Strizhak in the subject.

One of the most heroic episodes of the First World War was the defense of the Osovets fortress. It was from there that the legendary catch phrase "Russians do not surrender" came from. A video that is really worth watching.

And a little more on the same topic. Covers a huge sense of pride in their homeland, which raised such soldiers.

Such monuments should be, we must not forget, the millions of soldiers who died in that war. The only thing is that it will be difficult to set them up, because the databases basically did not go on the territory of the Russian Federation, respectively, and mass graves for the most part abroad.
