India purchased 66 thousand Russian Mango shells

On March 27, India signed a contract for the purchase of 66 thousand Russian 125-mm armor-piercing sub-caliber ZUBK20 “Mango” shells, altair.com.pl reports. The contract value is 26 billion rupees (approx. $420 million). Ammunition intended for weapons tanks T-90 with 2A46M guns.

The contract has been approved by the Indian Government Safety Committee. Negotiations have been ongoing since 2012. The Russian side was represented by the Rosoboronexport company. The agreement provides for licensed production of ammunition in India at the Ordnance Factory Board.

The problem of shortage of tank ammunition was one of the topics of a secret letter from the commander of the Indian Army, General V.K. Singh to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In a document released to the media, General Singh wrote that the army has ammunition for only 3-4 days of active combat. One of the reasons for this situation was the termination of the contract and blacklisting of the Israeli company IMI (Israeli Military Industry).

Note VPK.name: Apparently we are talking about 3BM42 “Mango”, and ZUBK20 is mentioned erroneously.

Why on earth is Israel supplying shells for our tanks? what's the catch? or did I misunderstand something?

It’s just that the question was not only about the shortage and acquisition of ammunition, but about production, and this is an economic issue.

The supply of ammunition will be carried out in varying degrees of readiness with the possibility of additional assembly on Indian territory.

The opening of licensed production will include several stages, including the preparation of technical documentation, supply of equipment and employee training. Negotiations on the supply of Mango shots to India have been held since 2011, and in June 2013 the parties initialed the corresponding contract. http://lenta.ru/news/2014/04/02/mango/

Gentlemen, Indians, buy our weapons, not American or other countries, at least we won’t deceive you and shove old junk into your hands.

And from such that they produce ammunition for various types of weapons. You’re not surprised that in the States, Israel and anywhere else, 5.45x39 or 7.62x39 cartridges, ammunition for RPG-7, etc. are produced, while here we produce 9x19 Parabellum or 5.56x45 cartridges. So here too - demand creates supply. As you know, there are two fools in the market - one sells, the other buys, and may the strongest win. The meaning of this trade is clear: quickly, efficiently, inexpensively - select the TWO items you want.

Do you think Israel makes it cheaper? or better quality? One can argue about the speed, but I think it was possible to sell from existing stocks. and I think it’s not entirely correct to compare cartridges and shells, a gun and its shell are more interdependent than a rifle and a cartridge

The most important thing is that Ukraine does not start engaging in provocations again.
They were already involved in negotiations (2011-2012), when they wanted to establish Mango production in their own country using someone else’s investment. So they said that Russia is pushing in old stuff, and showing other samples - new and high-quality ones.

We are faced with global tasks (for example, a unified payment system) so every penny counts. We can only be glad that this money was earned with brains (invention), and not *with a pipe from the bowels of the earth*.

The Israeli company IMI has developed two types of 125 mm tank ammunition.
New types of ammunition can improve the combat capabilities and survivability of India's T-72M and T-90S main battle tanks, increasing their armor penetration, as well as the effectiveness of anti-tank weapons and the destruction of fortified targets. IMI will present a multi-purpose 125mm tank round designed for the T-90, T-80 and T-72 main battle tanks.
The M710 multi-purpose tracer round (HE-MP-T - High-Explosive Multi-Purpose Tracered) is the latest in the IMI family of multi-purpose tank ammunition. The M710 is optimized to engage targets typically found in asymmetrical and urban scenarios, incl.
for the destruction of buildings and bunkers, light armored vehicles and fortifications. This ammunition is also effective against ATGM crews and infantry squads in open terrain, in a trench or behind an obstacle. The M710 uses an electronic detonation system that has different operating modes: PDD - Point Detonation Delayed, PD - Point Detonation/Super Quick and Air Burst.
The tank's fire control system provides target information and programs electronic fuses with wireless data transmission. PDD mode is designed to penetrate and explode inside targets such as double reinforced concrete walls, field fortification bunkers and light armored vehicles.
In PD mode, the projectile destroys reinforced concrete walls, creating a corridor for infantrymen. Air Burst mode is used to effectively destroy ATGM crews and infantry in open areas or behind natural cover and walls. Another recently developed 125 mm tank armor-piercing projectile is MK-2 (APFSDS-T - Armor Piercing, fin Stabilized, Discarding Sabot-Tracer) - a second generation, high-velocity, kinetic armor-piercing projectile. The MK-2 improves accuracy across all combat ranges, reduces bore wear and improves armor penetration capabilities when fired from existing 125mm guns. The projectile is equipped with a tungsten core and is also adapted for firing from 125 mm smoothbore tank guns.

What for? India has two potential enemies: China and Pakistan! There is almost no possibility of a tank attack from China - the Himalayas and the mid-altitude Assam-Burma mountains and the Shillong plateau. Unless, of course, they want to carry tanks on their hands. That leaves Pakistan, but their T-80UD is not a competitor. (The mango can also hit him in the forehead.)

Even the “journalists” got it wrong again. "Mango" is a ZBM42 model 1986. India doesn't seem to buy them. ZUBK20 is a shot with a 9M119M guided missile. This is by no means an armor-piercing sub-caliber projectile.

The 3VBM17 (3VBM17M) "Mango" shot with the 3BM42 (3BM42M) armor-piercing sabot projectile is no longer young; it has been produced since 1986.
But India has been mulling over this issue for a long time between the choice:
    - modernization of the AZ with the purchase of the latest types of shots.
    - creating your own “crowbar”
    - or purchasing “Mango”.
    The Indians chose “Mango”.
    This is their choice.

Just a few days ago this news was already discussed here on VO...

Now nothing new has been said, except for the journalist’s mistake in the GRAU index.
Shall we go around the second circle again?
