2 March 1994 of the Year in the Russian Federation appeared three new state awards that could be awarded to the military: the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, the Order of Courage and the Order of Military Merit. The Order “For Military Merit” is awarded to Russian servicemen for ensuring Russia's defense capability, for exemplary execution of military duty, for bravery and courage. In total, this award, since 1994, was awarded to more than 100 people.

Only state officers can be awarded with this state award. According to the statute, the Order for Military Merit is awarded to military personnel from among officers: for exemplary performance of official duties and the achievement of high combat skills of military personnel of subordinate units, units, formations; for high combat readiness of troops and ensuring the defense capability of the Russian Federation; for high personal performance in professional activities and training, courage and dedication shown in the performance of military duty in the performance of combat or combat training tasks; for merits in strengthening the military community and military cooperation with foreign countries. Initially, bona fide service for at least 10 years (up to 2010 year) and the presence of other state and departmental awards, as a rule, were a necessary condition for awarding. According to the changes to the statute of the award from 2011, the period of conscientious service was increased to 20 years.

In 2011, the circle of awards was expanded to include employees of the national defense industry, as well as civil servants. Employees of the military-industrial complex and civil servants are awarded the Order for their merits in the creation, production and commissioning of weapons and military equipment; for the development of military science; strengthening the country's defense and promoting interstate military-technical cooperation; for personal contribution to the implementation of state military policy. Also, starting from 2011, this order can be awarded to military personnel of foreign states - allies of the Russian Federation for their merits in strengthening military cooperation with Russia, the military community and the development of joint military maneuvers during exercises.

The badge of the Order “For Military Merit” is made of pure silver, also enamel is used. The sign is an eight-pointed star. The diagonal rays of this star form pentagons, each of which is covered with enamel of white, blue and red colors that repeat the color of the National Flag of the Russian Federation. On the central medallion there is a circle of laurel and oak branches in a circle, and there is a relief inscription “For Military Merit”. In the center of the medallion is the State Emblem of the Russian Federation, its image is also made in relief. The diameter of the mark is 40 mm, on its reverse side only the order number is located. With the help of a ring and an ear, the reward is connected to a standard pentagonal pad, which is covered with blue silk ribbon. In the center of the tape is a red stripe 5 mm wide, located between two white strips 2 mm wide, the total width of the tape itself is 24 mm.

The first decree awarding the Order for Military Merit was signed on 31 on December 1994 of the year, then the first 18 soldiers were awarded for performing a special assignment. The order badge for the number XXUMX was awarded to Lieutenant-General A. A. Romanov, Commander of the United Group of Federal Forces in Chechnya. Also among the first recipients of this order was Colonel V.M. Zhitarenko, special correspondent for the newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda, who died in the 1 area of ​​Grozny in January 1 of the year. It was already the 1995-I trip of a journalist to a hot spot. Since 21, he has managed to visit Afghanistan, Tajikistan, North Ossetia, Armenia. Colonel A.V. Another massive award for the Order of Military Merit took place in August and September 1995. Then the award was presented to 11 people who participated in the aftermath of the earthquake on Sakhalin, which almost completely destroyed the town of Neftegorsk. 2 August 1999 was a massive 9 awards ceremony for Russian paratroopers, who were awarded the Order for the accomplishment of the famous Bosnia-Kosovo march.

There were civilians among those awarded this order (it is curious that they began to reward them even before the statute was changed). On September 22, 2002, Guzhvin Anatoly Petrovich, the head of the administration of the Astrakhan region, was presented to the order. He was noted for his significant contribution to the establishment of the Caspian. flotilla, as well as a gathering campaign of Russian warships in the Caspian. On October 1, 2003, the award was awarded to the former mayor of Moscow, Yu. M. Luzhkov, the reason for the presentation was Luzhkov’s personal contribution to the provision of housing for military personnel. On October 24, 2005, the well-known Russian weapons designer M.T. Kalashnikov also received this award.

Last known award: the Order “For Military Merit” was awarded to the Director-General of the CJSC Scientific Production Association of Special Materials (St. Petersburg) Mikhail Silnikov. The award ceremony took place 2 February 2013 of the year.

    I have the honor to be a holder of this order. In my opinion, the order was conceived as a replacement for the Soviet order "For Service to the Motherland in the USSR Armed Forces". The latter had 3 degrees and a full bow gave privileges at the level of a Hero of the USSR. "ZVZ" of a very high status, worn on the left side after the Order of Courage.
