The Syrian army conducts a special operation against armed extremists in the port city of Baniyas and its surroundings.

Militants have fierce resistance. According to the Lebanese TV channels, there are dozens of wounded and dead. There is no clear picture of what is happening in 260 km northwest of Damascus, on the Mediterranean coast, ITAR-TASS reports.

The Syrian television station "Surya" reported that a military patrol was ambushed on Latakia-Tartus highway on Sunday. Two officers and seven soldiers died.
