The Russian Black Sea Fleet due to the exacerbation of the situation in Ukraine needs to be updated with new regional-type ships of the 1135.6 project Admiral Grigorovich, which is launched at the Yantar Baltic plant, said Admiral Vladimir Komoyedov, chairman of the Duma defense committee, former commander of the Black Sea Fleet.
"I am in favor of the Black Sea Fleet being built as a regional one due to the exacerbation of the situation in Ukraine. It does not need aircraft carriers and cruisers. When I was the commander, I didn’t know what to do with our Moscow cruiser during the threatened period," said Komoyedov before the flight to Kaliningrad to participate in the solemn launching ceremony for the lead ship of the 1135.6 series Admiral Grigorovich.
He stressed that Russia needs to implement the country's security in the so-called inland seas - the Black and Baltic - meaning, above all, security of regional importance. "And for this purpose, it is necessary to use medium-sized ships of the Admiral Grigorovich project," the admiral explained.
"In total, up to 2016, six non-nuclear submarines will be built for the Black Sea Fleet. This will allow to fully perform the tasks in the operational area of the Black Sea Fleet, which includes the waters of the Black and Mediterranean Seas," Komoyedov noted.
The head of the Duma defense committee emphasized that regardless of the results of the referendum in Crimea on March 16, the Black Sea Fleet was and will remain the main base fleet in the Sevastopol.
