Armored personnel carrier BTR-90 Rostock

26

The BTR-90 armored personnel carrier was commissioned by the Ministry of Defense and is a joint invention of the serial car department of the management of design and experimental works of GAZ OJSC and the Arzamas engineering plant. This vehicle has roots that grow from the well-proven 8-myco-series BTR (60, 70, 80) series. On this basis, the BTR-90 scheme did not change much. The layout of the armored personnel carrier includes the engine with 2-mea jet propulsion at the rear of the combat vehicle, the wheel formula 8х8, an extensive troop compartment.

Features of the BTR-90 are in its armament, similar to the BMP-2. The tower carries ATGM "Competition", grenade launcher AG-17; 7,62 mm PKT machine gun and, of course, 30 mm 2A42 automatic gun. The increase in combat capabilities of the BTR-90 allowed him to fight tanks at distances of up to 4 km, effectively counteract aircraft and light armored vehicles at a distance of up to 2,5 km. It is worth noting that a promising armored personnel carrier platform (carrying capacity - 7 tons) could well be used to create a transportable combat vehicle with a 120-mm tank gun, a mobile air defense system or anti-tank system on its basis.

BTR-90 is endowed with a unique transmission, which increases its maneuverability. In addition to moving on the ground, the combat vehicle is able to sail, moving over the water surface, or in a storm up to 3 points.

By the development of the chassis BTR-90 approached with great care. Against the backdrop of a powerful 510-powerful, multi-fuel turbocharged diesel engine, the awesome mobility doesn't seem so fantastic. The universal torsion bar suspension on the transverse levers due to the large travel, wide-profile tires with a system of centralized air pressure regulation and energy-intensive telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers gives the armored personnel carrier the opportunity to drive more than 50 km / h - on difficult terrain and at a speed of 100 km / h on the highway. The machine is able to move in case of penetration of 4-x wheels.

On the BTR-90 used universal transmission design. The forces from the engine in the hydromechanical gearbox are transferred, through a differential system, to the 2 parallel flow along the sides of the armored personnel carrier. Due to the hydrostatic transmission, the required difference in rotational speeds of the four front steer wheels along the sides is ensured, which leads to the rotation of the car.

Despite the relatively large weight (around 21 t), the machine can overcome water obstacles without preliminary preparation thanks to the installation of two jet propulsion units. As tests have shown in the sea, with an excitement of up to three points, the machine is able to float, as well as confidently enter the landing ship from the water and get out of it.

The BTR-90 is the first of the armored personnel carriers that can be equipped with an on-board information and control system (BIUS), which allows for efficient automated control of the transmission and engine, monitoring and diagnostics of vital machine systems.

The double combat compartment serves as a shelter for the commander and gunner operator. It is stabilized in the 2-x planes. Thus, the BTR is able to fire in motion, regardless of the terrain.

The machine has a day commander's sight 1П-13, as well as a combined sight BPCZ-42 operator. At the request of the customer, the gunner’s sighting equipment can be replaced with a BOD-M sight with a thermal imager of the French company SAT.

Not without attention were issues of ensuring the protection of the crew. BTR-90 is equipped with a complex of collective protection against weapons mass destruction. The BTR mounted the collective defense systems of the assault force (10 people) from the shock wave and the effects of radiation, from the penetration of bacterial agents, radioactive dust, poisons during the use of the BTR in the contaminated area. Naturally, the crew is safe from the fragments of shells and bullets of large-caliber machine guns. In case of emergency, the machine can be equipped with additional armor, including elements of reactive armor and passive protection.

In 2010, the MO refused to purchase BTRs with a traditional rear-engine layout, in the light of which the prospects for mass production of the BTR-90 turned out to be untenable.

the ability to go more than 50 km / h - in difficult terrain?!?! - and then put your teeth where smile The car is clearly an "end-to-end" evolutionary intermediate model with interesting solutions, but a new basic platform is needed

doors from the sides, they waste time and expose fighters to fire. The Khokhols are already parachuting from the rear on the "Bucephalus"

Here again in this probably not the most "fresh" article there are words about "uniqueness" ...

    Dear editors!

And why, if there is a BTR-90, they tested BTR-82, 82A at Arzamas, by the way, there is silence about the results.

And about French night sights - is there already a joint company with the Russian company that produces these sights?
Talk about creating a joint venture - 2 years ago.
    What happened there?

They did a good thing, tried hard !! But they’ll do the dismounting from behind, and then, finally, they can let us in the series !?

It seems like the "Sprout" was finalized with shrapnel, you can watch a demo video on youtube, code U3yLwJA-xyY

Although the BTR-90 is a workhorse, you should not expect more from it.

Personally, I see no reason to turn an APC into a kind of BMP. Recall that the purpose of armored personnel carriers is to deliver personnel to the leading edge. No more. Infantry has its own means to combat the enemy’s armored vehicles. Becoming a major target, BMP with this light armor cannot protect the weapons on board.

Great car. Judging by the difference in weight from the 80th, not only increased size but also increased armor.

Only in fact, from the moment of the collapse, the new cars go into production very tightly, and it’s a pity that such armor would have come in handy to the infantry, even more reinforced (there are body kit options), and with the Bahcha-U turret (from BMP-3).

The question is, how much is the BTR-90 more expensive than the BTR (a) -80?

It is interesting when the Russians finally understand that the rear-engine layout, i.e. landing from the sides is the 70s of the last century. The whole world makes an APC with a rear landing, but only you - the best armored personnel carrier in the world - with a rear MTO)

"You will fit in our coffins without diet and aerobics" - this aphorism is just suitable to define the entire family of armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles made in Soviet times. The current time requires heavy vehicles with anti-cannon and anti-cumulative armor, capable of protecting the infantry from explosions on the road, ambushes from RPGs and heavy machine-gun fire. We need vehicles that cover the infantry inside themselves, and do not carry it on their roof.
Only Israel now has such machines.

BMP vehicles are of little use, Chechnya showed this, armored personnel carriers can only be used as a scout, so their ability to swim in this case is justified, but their participation in battle is a risk, because their armor of armor-piercing bullets does not stand up.

Airborne squad BTR-90. Armchairs are suspended from the ceiling.

The BTR itself has a V-shaped bottom, a clearance of 51 cm (when hitting a mine +) and 7 tons more armor than the BTR-80, inside the BTR there is an anti-splinter coating.
An armored personnel carrier is most often fired upon while driving in a convoy and having exits on different sides makes it possible to leave the car on the side not fired. If, however, they simply land troops on the move, then they do not run in a train behind the machine, but must disperse anyway, so here too the side exit is not an obstacle, but only makes it easier to do so.
With a rear-engined layout, the vehicle is well balanced, the troop and combat compartment is located in the center of the vehicle, and this is the most comfortable place for both weapons and people. There are many films on the Internet about the BTR-90 and the Ukrainian BTR-4 ("Bucephalus"). They are comparable in weight and power-to-weight ratio, but the difference in how cars show themselves on the move and afloat is enormous, precisely because of the alignment of the machine.

In 2009 - 2010, the design bureau of the Arzamas Engineering Plant began developing a new armored personnel carrier "Gilza" based on the BTR-90. In accordance with the new requirements of the customer, the armored personnel carrier must be arranged with the MTO in the front of the vehicle and the landing compartment in the stern, which will strengthen the protection and improve the conditions for the landing (an example is a Finnish armored personnel carrier "Patria"). It is planned to make a deep unification with the BMP-3M power plant, weapons, a single on-board information control system, a car reservation system and other improvements

The car has 2 sides, they shoot from one side - substitute one side (for this the BTR-90 unfolds in place), covering the paratroopers with a wide side, the soldiers will leave / will enter through the other side. Those paratroopers who are in the car can fire from the side. What about the back exit? The doorway there is wider - they run out faster, that's a plus. But they are covered only by the frontal projection of the APC, which is several times smaller than the projection of the side, this is especially important when landing in the APC under fire, all the advantage of a wide door will come to naught. If the fire on the armored personnel carrier is conducted from several sides, then here the entry / exit from different sides has advantages - there are more chances to survive at the landing.

For those who didn’t go to the APC. I personally tested the BTR-70M (it differs from the 70s with a diesel engine). He walked on arable land 80, at the top we poured vodka into mugs, we didn’t even drop a drop. The higher the speed, the smoother it is. Only the suspension travel is amazing, 60 centimeters))

I absolutely agree with Maksimov and some others - it’s easier to go out with a side landing under cover, and on 80s and newer, the upper half of the side hatch opens forward and just covers the exit, and the lower part, like from the footboard, is convenient to jump off and lie down .

It is a pity that the BTR-90 was not adopted. It is much superior to the BTR-80, BTR-80A, BTR-82.
