The article "Killing the Kiowa and Digging from Disarray" by Robert F Dorr, published in the February issue of Air International magazine, provides some details about the Pentagon’s plans for the Boeing AH-64 Apache and Bell OH-58 Kiowa Warrior helicopters.

US Department of Defense plans for the future of AN-64 and OH-58 helicopters

Thus, the future plans assume the cancellation of the existing reconnaissance helicopters OH-58D and the cessation of work on the modernization program of these helicopters according to the OH-58F variant. This should apply to 338 helicopters of ground forces and 30 - National Guard. The tasks of OH-58 are supposed to be transferred to combat helicopters AN-64Е that will perform the functions of a light reconnaissance helicopter. To compensate for the drop-out OH-58D, the National Guard will transfer its Apaches to the ground forces, and then, in turn, will receive Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk as a substitute.

At present, the total number of AH-64 in the US military reaches 810 units - of which it was planned to have 690 AH-64E (570 in the Army, 72 in the National Guard and 48 in reserve), and 120 AH-64D in the National Guard. According to the proposed plans, all 690 AH-64E will be transferred to the ground forces, and non-modernized AH-64D will be written off. Thus, the reserve, in principle, loses the Apache helicopters.

As for OH-58D, the manufacturer, Bell Helicopters, claims that its combat readiness level reaches 85%, which is higher than the average for American military aircraft (72%). The OH-58D raid under combat conditions reaches 820 thousand hours. In peacetime, the average monthly raid on a helicopter is 20 hours, but on missions to hot spots like Afghanistan, it reaches an average 80-100 hours.

Representatives of the army command did not respond to the request of "Air International" regarding the cost of flight hours. But according to the data released in 2011, the OH-58D flight hour was 2355 dollars, UH-60M - 3648 dollars and AH-64D - 5971 dollars. According to the calculations of the army command, the cost of the annual operation of the Apache by 1 million dollars . exceeds that of the light helicopter UH-72 Lacota.

Land Forces plans also provide for the decommissioning of Bell TH-67 Creek helicopters, which are used for the training and education of pilots. Their place should take 204 Eurocopter UH-72A, transferred from the Army Aviation and the National Guard.

The National Guard will hand over their Apaches to the ground forces, and then in turn will receive a replacement Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk.
Looks like the crisis has hooked that they have started optimization.
You can't fly in Apache like that.

The National Guard is the so-called organized reserve of the US Armed Forces and performs approximately the same functions as the internal troops and the Ministry of Emergencies.

So what for did Apaches surrender to her? Optimization is the main reason here, it would be strange to think that in a country that prints money there is a problem with them.

They surrendered to her, because this is primarily a reserve. And saving is the most important reason.

It is not clear from the article the reasons for this amer maneuver. Only the price of exploitation? Not like the truth.

It seems to me that everything is simple. The National Guard is not fighting anywhere and it does not need any Apache shock. And the ground forces decided to get rid of different types of helicopters. Fewer different models - easier to carry out repairs. And the point here is not the crisis, if you look at the cost of a flight hour, then Apache’s it is 2.5 times higher than that of OH-58, what kind of savings are there.

Still simpler - the Pentagon is forced to save and secondary troops are forced to tighten.

Judging by the title of the article "Killing the Kiowa and Digging from Disarray", the impression was that the Americans decided to leave the Boeing AH-64 Apache and decommission the Bell OH-58 Kiowa Warrior. Just like the Soviet cartoons have seen enough about "Oh and Oh" laughing

There is more and more information about attempts to save a little money and sometimes it turns out funny, especially when you want to leave helicopters and immediately report on savings.
I think the solution will be found in a purely American style.
I don’t know where, but the Americans will soon try to get into another war!
And abbreviations ........... will not be on a completely specious pretext.

Well, not at all funny. Someone who, and the Americans know how to count money. And they have long figured out what and what. If they are reforming, it is in stages, regardless of the change of government or the leadership of the Pentagon. And get involved in another war with an unstable economy? I don’t think so. But time will tell, because the Apache will have to be transferred to the National Guard again.

        You can’t refuse them this!
Judging by the receipts of money from the USA, have problems with democracy in Ukraine begun again?
Maybe this is certainly a coincidence ...... but there is no smoke $$$

Suppose they won’t break them, not as stupid as some in the 90s. And the national guard, it’s for a simple, intelligible-reserve Army. We are only talking about, they are trying, at the expense of the same Cossacks, to start experiments on creating .And helicopters are good, you have no doubt, and there are a lot of them to our liking, so you need to quickly turn around and despite the cries from the West and local liberals, you need to strengthen the defense.
