The safety of athletes and guests of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi will be provided by more than 100 thousand police officers, intelligence officers and military personnel, as well as the most modern equipment. RT correspondent Martin Andrews made sure that during the competition the Olympic capital will be the safest place on earth.

At any international event, security is the number one issue. And at the 2014 Winter Olympics, they don't save on this. The city is surrounded by a dense ring, and no one - neither the residents, nor the guests, nor the staff - can get there without a special pass. At the same time, one of the main tasks is to avoid turmoil.
“Many athletes say that there was such a negative assessment of the press in their countries that some were afraid to go. But when they arrived, they saw what was happening here, then they had some kind of a shift in consciousness. Because they said one thing, but it turned out all wrong. The question is, why did they say that? Many have good impressions and precisely because there is little discomfort when going through various controls, ”said RT the Mayor of the Olympic Village and the champion of the Olympic Games in Turin-2006 Svetlana Zhurova.
The measures taken are not limited to tightening control and increasing the number of personnel of the security forces. The police are additionally trained on horseback patrols, which provide them with a better overview.
“Mounted police, it is more effective. When a large crowd of people, then the rider has an advantage over the walking policeman. He sits above, observes the whole territory, can coordinate other services, seeing the whole picture from above. If any unforeseen situations occur, the officers of the mounted police can assist the rest of the policemen to eliminate this situation, ”said the commander of the Moscow cavalry battalion Gennady Shimkus.
All measures taken, including assistance from the US authorities, are aimed at ensuring that the safety of local residents and guests is at an unprecedented high level.
Almost 500 Cossacks will also guard some Olympic facilities. In their traditional form - black high caps and coats with epaulets - they are ready to help the police.
“Historically, the Cossacks have always served, military service for the protection of the borders of the Russian Federation, or rather, the Russian Empire or the Russian state. And the peculiarity is that these are people who live exactly on this territory. They know the peculiarities of this territory, they know the people, the mentality, ”said the ataman of the Cossack troops of the city of Sochi, Valery Efremov.
Cossacks should help maintain a friendly atmosphere between people of different religions and cultures. They dont have weaponsthey can only stop the commission of illegal actions, calling the police and waiting for the authorities to arrive.
Recently, the number of service dogs, horses, policemen and Cossacks has sharply increased at the Black Sea resort, which means guests of the Olympiad and local residents are in safe hands. It is expected that thousands of policemen, security personnel and the military, whose purpose is to make these Olympics the safest in all history.
