TrackingPoint introduced a new PGF smart weapon
At this time, customers were offered a line of self-loading rifles TrackingPoint 500 Series, created on the basis of weapons of the AR family. Various modifications of these rifles long ago regained their place in the arms market and using them as a basis for a new rifle system is expected to interest potential buyers. The shooters are offered a choice of three rifles of the “500 Series”, differing from each other in the used cartridge. The new rifles will be available in 7,62 mm, .300 BLK and 5,56 mm calibers.
TrackingPoint 500 Series rifles have already begun collecting orders. Prices for new weapons start from 9950 US dollars, depending on the model and configuration. The manufacturer notes that customers will have to wait several months. The first serial rifles of the new PGF models will be handed over to customers in October of this year.
The relatively high cost of TrackingPoint 500 Series rifles is due to the complexity and high cost of the PGF sighting system, which is in fact the main element of the entire shooting complex. It is designed to accurately determine the position of the target, the distance to it and calculate the corrections necessary for firing. According to official information, a variant of the PGF system, which will be equipped with 500-series rifles, will allow accurate fire at a distance of at least 500 yards (approximately 457 meters). It is argued that the shooter will be able to hit targets even from difficult positions.
TrackingPoint 500 Series rifles will receive a version of the PGF system, designed for the ammunition they use. At the same time, the overall architecture and the operating principle of the sighting system have not changed. As follows from the available information, the TrackingPoint employees have only finalized the software. Despite this, the PGF system still has quite high characteristics that will allow shooters to confidently hit targets at long distances.
The PGF sighting system includes two video cameras with a set of special filters, a laser rangefinder, a computer, a screen, microphones and a set of sensors. During operation, a miniature computer sight collects information about weather conditions (wind speed and direction, temperature and pressure), distance to the target and the direction of its movement. According to official data, the PGF electronics can track objects moving at speeds up to 10 miles per hour. The collected data is displayed on the display, which functions as an eyepiece of the sight, and is also processed by a ballistic calculator. The electronics of the sighting system calculates the necessary corrections and displays them on the screen. Thus, the arrow can only point the weapon at the target, take it to the escort and, having received the amendments for the shooting, pull the trigger. If necessary, the shooter can use third-party computing equipment - a smartphone or tablet computer. Its connection with the sight occurs via a wireless connection such as Wi-Fi.
The new modification of the PGF sighting system at a distance of 500 meters, allegedly, allows to achieve an accuracy that is five times greater than the capabilities of an experienced shooter. In addition, TrackingPoint 500 Series rifles make it possible to effectively hit moving targets. This means that even an inexperienced shooter will be able to significantly improve their accuracy with the new aiming system.
Despite the relatively high cost of new rifles, the management of TrackingPoint believes that they will quickly gain popularity among shooters. The developers of the 500 series believe that potential buyers will be interested not only in new rifles, but also in the PGF sighting systems. Previous weapon models equipped with TrackingPoint Precision Guided Firearms sighting systems have had some success on the market. The same future tipped new rifle line.
For obvious reasons, the general public is not yet able to try out new rifles with a PGF sight. TrackingPoint is now collecting pre-orders, and shipping ready-made weapons will only begin in the fall. Probably, soon after this, the first reviews and demonstrations of these weapons will appear, made not by the manufacturer, but by the users.
