Today, the article deals with the last combat award of the USSR, which existed even before the start of the Great Patriotic War. Speech on the medal "For Military Merit." This government award was instituted on October 17 1938 of the year. The Red Army men, Red Navy men, frontier guards and soldiers of internal troops, as well as other citizens of the USSR and persons who are citizens of other states could be presented with this award. The medal was awarded for the active promotion of successful combat operations, as well as strengthening the combat readiness of units.

The Medal for Military Merit medal was made of pure silver of the 925 test and was a regular circle, its diameter was equal to 31-32,5 mm depending on the year of the award. On the obverse of the medal, bordered by a side, along the circumference in the upper part, the inscription USSR was made in depressed letters. In the middle of the medal was the inscription "For Military Merit," the inscription was embossed, the height of the letters in it was 3 mm. Directly under this inscription was a relief image of a crossed rifle (the bayonet is attached, the belt is released) and the checkers. The reverse side of the award was just plain smooth, there were no images or inscriptions on it. With the help of the ring and the ear, the reward was connected to a pentagonal pad that was covered with a gray moire silk ribbon. Along the edges of the tape there were two longitudinal strips of golden color. The total width of the tape was 24 mm, the width of each golden strip - 2 mm.

The author of the picture of the medal "For Military Merit" was the artist S. I. Dmitriev. In the USSR, this military award was established simultaneously with another famous medal - "For Courage". These two awards were the first Soviet combat medals. By the time the Great Patriotic War began, they were the only ones. The first award of the medal "For Military Merit" was held on October 19 1938 of the year, according to the signed Decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet, 168 people were presented for the award.

Military orders and medals of the Soviet Union. Medal "For Military Merit"

The medal "For Military Merit" for №1 was awarded to Lev Petrovich Vasilevsky (pseudonym Tarasov) - Soviet intelligence officer, colonel of state security. From 1936 to 1938 for years, he worked in Spain, occupying the post of commander of the reconnaissance and sabotage group of the Foreign Department of the NKVD in Spain, was the senior adviser to the special department of the Madrid Front. After military service, he devoted himself to literature. He is the author of many documentary stories about the work of Soviet intelligence in Spain, Paris, Mexico. Also known for the fact that, together with Anatoly Gorsky, translated into Russian the famous adventure novel “Odyssey of Captain Blood”.

In large numbers this military medal was awarded to the Red Army soldiers who were participants in battles with the Japanese on Lake Hassan. For the conscientious, exemplary performance of combat missions, for their courage and valor during the battles at Lake Hassan 25 in October 1938, the 1158 man was presented to the Medal for Military Merit medal.

The next time in the USSR, participants in fights with Japanese troops on the Khalkhin Gol River were awarded this medal. This river, which was lost in the boundless steppes of neighboring Mongolia, became the scene of fierce battles that entered history. In the summer of 1939, the Soviet troops showed massive heroism here. For the exploits shown during the fighting on the Khalkhin-Gol River, the 2842 man was presented to the Medal for Military Merit medal. Among the heroes of the fighting with the Japanese was Sergeant Pavel Elizarovich Ponomarev. He was among those who were among the first to receive this award, and later became the owner of a whole set of Soviet orders and medals, including orders of Lenin, the Red Banner, the Red Banner of the Mongolian People's Republic, the Red Star, and the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . In total, up to 22 June 1941, thousands of people were presented to the “For Military Merit” medal for the 21 medal.

During the Great Patriotic War, the medal "For Military Merit" was awarded massively. Basically, this award was awarded to ordinary soldiers and non-commissioned officers, less often it was awarded to junior officers of the Red Army. At the same time, during the war, there were also cases of awarding the civilians medal “For Military Merit”. For example, already in the summer of 1941, an 15-year-old Moscow resident, an ordinary school student Zhenya Nefedov, was presented to this military medal. Nefedov received this medal for successfully combating the incendiary bombs that fascist planes dropped on residential areas of the capital in the summer of 1941. In just one raid, a student of 8 class Zhenya Nefedov was able to put out 8 German incendiary bombs.

Even before the end of the war, the Presidium of the Armed Forces of the USSR issued a decree (4 of June 1944 of the year) that soldiers and officers of the Red Army could be presented to the Medal for Military Merit medal for years of service. Thus, this award was the only medal that Red Army soldiers were awarded for 10 years of impeccable service (for 15 and 20 years of impeccable service were awarded already orders). This medal order remained until the 1958 year, after which it was canceled.

Already after the end of the war, besides the length of service, this medal was also awarded for specific differences in battle. For example, in 1956, particularly distinguished paratroopers from the 7 Guards Airborne Division were awarded this medal for suppressing a “counterrevolutionary insurrection” in Hungary and were awarded this medal. In total, 196 people were presented to the medal. In total, until the collapse of the USSR, 5 210 078 was awarded, most of which occurred during the years of the Great Patriotic War.

The medal block of the 1938 sample of the year was rectangular, the pentagon on the base appeared only in the 1943 year.
Until 1948, each medal had its own number.
In addition to the pads, the medal itself almost did not change, there are minor exceptions: varieties of the ramrod of the rifle and the hilt of the checker.

It was considered medal number 2 after the medal "For Courage" (even in size).
BZ (except for the length of service after the war), it was possible to get and for the difference in service in peacetime.

Regarding the medal number 1 ...

... The first award of the medal "For Military Merit" was made by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 19 1938 year. According to this decree, 168 people were awarded medals. The alphabetical list was opened by the names of the junior commander Abrakhmanov Abdurasul, the Red Army soldiers Abdullin Sadrin, Aitaliev Husan, Alibekov Ergeaz and senior political officer Andreev Alexander Timofeevich ...
I always thought that was so. However, she is also listed by Vasilevsky ...

Very powerful and capacious koment to the article. Thank you, I found out a lot of interesting things for myself.
We, the military, have developed a professional habit: when greeting a person, you involuntarily cast a glance at the order bars (what is listed as "right-flank" there?). From this, in many respects, communication is built. Among my first three medals, ZBZ gave special weight in the eyes of my peers. The title answered the question: "For what?" But to the question: "Where did you earn it?" - I had to answer at the table!

Very correct educational program in relation to the award system of the USSR. I would like to see a continuation with regard to the modern award system (where is the dark forest! .. Now each department rewards with its medals and signs).
I agree with Aleks TV, the very correct ZBZ medal.
Both grandfathers (one of them twice) and father were awarded this medal. A classmate, my friend, in Afghanistan, he earned the ZBZ and Valor.
In vain, this medal was removed from the award system.

I wear the first jacket in the first of five rows, I am more proud of it than the "Red Star", because I received it for combat work, and Kr Zvezda only for testing new equipment.

The reward is the recognition by the state of your merits! It's a shame when military awards are leveled by the issuance of "seniority"! Nevertheless, the medals "for BZ and Courage", as well as the Order of the RED STAR are very respected awards! May God grant health to the people who wear these awards!

Dear editors, please tell me. From my great-grandfather, the medal "For Military Merit" remained, but the ribbon on the shoe is not gray, it has red, white and yellow stripes (like the medal "For Victory over Japan"), but nowhere can I find such a description of the medal. The block has not changed, the attachments are not broken. Great-grandfather fought in Manchuria. Thanks in advance!
