The author of the picture of the medal "For Military Merit" was the artist S. I. Dmitriev. In the USSR, this military award was established simultaneously with another famous medal - "For Courage". These two awards were the first Soviet combat medals. By the time the Great Patriotic War began, they were the only ones. The first award of the medal "For Military Merit" was held on October 19 1938 of the year, according to the signed Decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet, 168 people were presented for the award.
The medal "For Military Merit" for №1 was awarded to Lev Petrovich Vasilevsky (pseudonym Tarasov) - Soviet intelligence officer, colonel of state security. From 1936 to 1938 for years, he worked in Spain, occupying the post of commander of the reconnaissance and sabotage group of the Foreign Department of the NKVD in Spain, was the senior adviser to the special department of the Madrid Front. After military service, he devoted himself to literature. He is the author of many documentary stories about the work of Soviet intelligence in Spain, Paris, Mexico. Also known for the fact that, together with Anatoly Gorsky, translated into Russian the famous adventure novel “Odyssey of Captain Blood”.
In large numbers this military medal was awarded to the Red Army soldiers who were participants in battles with the Japanese on Lake Hassan. For the conscientious, exemplary performance of combat missions, for their courage and valor during the battles at Lake Hassan 25 in October 1938, the 1158 man was presented to the Medal for Military Merit medal.
The next time in the USSR, participants in fights with Japanese troops on the Khalkhin Gol River were awarded this medal. This river, which was lost in the boundless steppes of neighboring Mongolia, became the scene of fierce battles that entered history. In the summer of 1939, the Soviet troops showed massive heroism here. For the exploits shown during the fighting on the Khalkhin-Gol River, the 2842 man was presented to the Medal for Military Merit medal. Among the heroes of the fighting with the Japanese was Sergeant Pavel Elizarovich Ponomarev. He was among those who were among the first to receive this award, and later became the owner of a whole set of Soviet orders and medals, including orders of Lenin, the Red Banner, the Red Banner of the Mongolian People's Republic, the Red Star, and the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . In total, up to 22 June 1941, thousands of people were presented to the “For Military Merit” medal for the 21 medal.
During the Great Patriotic War, the medal "For Military Merit" was awarded massively. Basically, this award was awarded to ordinary soldiers and non-commissioned officers, less often it was awarded to junior officers of the Red Army. At the same time, during the war, there were also cases of awarding the civilians medal “For Military Merit”. For example, already in the summer of 1941, an 15-year-old Moscow resident, an ordinary school student Zhenya Nefedov, was presented to this military medal. Nefedov received this medal for successfully combating the incendiary bombs that fascist planes dropped on residential areas of the capital in the summer of 1941. In just one raid, a student of 8 class Zhenya Nefedov was able to put out 8 German incendiary bombs.
Even before the end of the war, the Presidium of the Armed Forces of the USSR issued a decree (4 of June 1944 of the year) that soldiers and officers of the Red Army could be presented to the Medal for Military Merit medal for years of service. Thus, this award was the only medal that Red Army soldiers were awarded for 10 years of impeccable service (for 15 and 20 years of impeccable service were awarded already orders). This medal order remained until the 1958 year, after which it was canceled.
Already after the end of the war, besides the length of service, this medal was also awarded for specific differences in battle. For example, in 1956, particularly distinguished paratroopers from the 7 Guards Airborne Division were awarded this medal for suppressing a “counterrevolutionary insurrection” in Hungary and were awarded this medal. In total, 196 people were presented to the medal. In total, until the collapse of the USSR, 5 210 078 was awarded, most of which occurred during the years of the Great Patriotic War.
