Nuclear melt - the beginning of recovery

End of 2013 for the Navy fleet Russia was marked by replenishment. The fleet was transferred the second strategic missile carrier of project 955 Borey - “Alexander Nevsky”, and on December 30 the ceremony of transferring the lead multipurpose missile carrier of project 885 “Ash” - “Severodvinsk”

Better late than never

At the beginning of the year, the head "Borey" - "Yuri Dolgoruky" was transferred to the fleet. Its construction began in 1995. Severodvinsk was delayed even more - it was laid in 1993. The construction of “Alexander Nevsky” was much faster - it began in 2004 year.

However, you need to understand that the actual production time of the Yury Dolgoruky and Severodvinsk was not much longer - stable funding and regular work began only closer to the middle of the 2000-s. Until that time, both ships were a few separate sections with almost no filling. At the same time, both projects had to be reworked for new equipment, since progress in the field of electronics, hydroacoustics and other industries did not stand still.

Today, the construction time is reduced: in the next, 2014, the third ship of the 955 project, the Vladimir Monomakh, laid down in 2006, should be handed over to the fleet. And the time of construction of the fourth and subsequent "Boreev" is planned to be reduced to 4 years. The same thing should happen with "Ash". The main problem of “Boreev” is still the lack of knowledge of the Bulava missile complex, but this should be fixed in the next year or two.

Nuclear and non-nuclear deterrence

Appointment of "Ash" and "Boreev" is similar, but it has significant differences. "Boreas" - "Dolgoruky", "Nevsky" and the subsequent "princes" - strategic missile carriers. On board each - 16 ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads. The main weapons Yasenei are universal launchers containing up to 32 cruise missiles of the Onyx and / or Caliber complexes. Depending on the weapons, Ash trees can hit surface and coastal targets at a distance of 2 800 kilometers. The range of anti-ship missiles is less - to 300 kilometers, but they have a higher speed of flight.

The variety and high accuracy of cruise missiles make it possible to use Yasen-type submarines for strategic non-nuclear deterrence tasks - they can effectively destroy military infrastructure, including facilities for an early warning system and anti-missile defense. In addition, they can attack aircraft carrier compounds, and their torpedo armament and underwater acoustics allow them to deal with the enemy’s strategic missile-carriers.

In total, under the current state armament program, the fleet should receive eight boats of the 2020 Borey and 955 Ash trees by the 885 year. Currently, the Russian Navy has received two Boreas, the first Ash is expected to arrive in the near future, two more Boreas and two Ash trees are in various stages of construction and testing, and at least four more boats are expected to be built in 2014. both projects.

Not "Ash" one ...

With all the advantages of the project 885 "Ash" have a very significant drawback: the cost of these boats is about one hundred billion rubles. This is due to the considerable size and outstanding tactical and technical characteristics (TTH), coupled with combat capabilities. At the same time, the tasks of the Navy cannot be solved solely by introducing a relatively small number of these boats. At best, "Ash" can replace the aging "aircraft carrier hunters" project 949A "Antey" in the ranks.

Infographics: RIA News

However, the fleet needs at least another half to two dozen modern multi-purpose nuclear submarines to solve the daily tasks of tracking submarines and ships of the likely enemy, as well as to protect their missile carriers from enemy submarin fighters and, finally, for regular presence in key areas ocean with the possibility of timely rotation of forces and their capacity.

Such a boat should be the new project of the Malachit St. Petersburg Marine Engineering Bureau (SPMBM Malachite OJSC). The construction of the boat will begin approximately in the second half of the decade. The project will have a smaller size and arsenal compared to Yasen. This will make the construction Submarines of this type are much faster.

In combination with diesel submarines of new construction, three new nuclear projects - "Ash", "Borey" and promising submarine "Malachite" - will form the basis of the submarine forces of the Russian Navy on 30-40 years ahead.

Well, yes, one of the constraints is definitely. And as an argument, it will do, together with flying, driving and other arguments in different ways. Still, the "political will" has not "cooled down" to have these same arguments, well, to use them as intended.

Judging by the strong-willed shake off Siluanov, which in short sounds like "Hands off the military-industrial complex and the state defense order", there is no reason to doubt this will.

How many??? Where do these numbers come from? In fact, a couple of years ago there was an article here about a contract with USC for 5 Ash-trees for 160 billion, 32 billion per unit.

As far as I remember, not so long ago VVP said that the Yasen contract should be completed on time (2020) for 8 boats. I think that despite the high cost, these boats are very much needed by our Navy.

Yes about the price somehow "from the ceiling" said in the article.
The price of the 1 combat-ready instance is always difficult to calculate, and especially LONG-TERM (20 years after all), but the prices of subsequent boats are known for sure. We must immediately make a reservation that the submarine Severodvinsk 885 Ash is the only one, all subsequent submarines pr885M Ash-M and their price is approximately the following:
          - 47bn for Kazan (laying on the slipway took place on July 24, July 2009)
          - 41bn for Novosibirsk (tab 26 July 2013) and subsequent submarines

The authors somehow always one-sidedly (and often mistakenly) talk about the prices of our weapons, but if they begin to compare specifications, they will immediately find samples of Western equipment and capture it.
So let's talk about the price of SIMILAR NPS in other countries. Remembering that
            - 47bn for Kazan (laying on the slipway took place on July 24, July 2009)
            - 41bn for Novosibirsk (tab 26 July 2013) and subsequent submarines

            1. Submarine "Sea Wolf" USA, characteristics as similar as possible to Ash - "issue price" $ 4,3 billion (more than 140 billion rubles per unit) made 3 pl and everything ... EXPENSIVE.
            2. US Virginia nuclear submarine, characteristics are more modest (12 launchers for the Kyrgyz Republic, depth of max 250 meters, etc.), the price is from 2,5 to 1,8 billion USD (more than 80 billion - 60 billion rubles) 9 units were built (plan 30 ).
You say America prints dollars and other pricing, ok!
            3. Submarine Astyut ENGLAND, the characteristic is more modest, from open sources the underwater displacement in 2 is less (7800т, against 13800т), working depth is 300м. The price of 1,22 billion pounds (more than 65bn rubles) is built by 2 (plan 7)
There are also French nuclear submarines, but I think the range of prices and characteristics of the "product" are clear.

In addition to these, there will also be diesel engines.

It is often noticed in the article and in the comments that stagnant production for five years at full capacity is difficult to disperse, as this is all accompanied by technical re-equipment, retraining and everything else that was not done in 90x and the beginning of 2000x.

      ... SERIOUS FAILURE

But in Russia, work on the creation of a 4th generation NPL has not worked out. The design of the domestic submarine of project 677 Lada began at the Central Design Bureau MT Rubin in 1989. About 10 years later, on December 26, 1997, the first 4th-generation Russian non-nuclear submarine, called St. Petersburg, was laid down on the closed slipway of Admiralty Shipyards in St. Petersburg. When laying it, it was understood that during the construction process it will be equipped with a domestic anaerobic installation with ECG, as in the German project 212.

The boat was completed only in 2007, and then she went to the factory sea trials. Almost at the same time, the construction of the second (Kronshtadt) and the third (Sevastopol) NPL of Project 677 Lada for the Russian Navy began at the Admiralty Shipyards. At the end of 2007, the State Commission was to accept St. Petersburg and put the submarine into operation. However, the tests, it seems, are not entirely successful, since the boat has not yet been commissioned. It is possible that this project has intractable defects.

Moreover, the submarine went on sea trials without an anaerobic installation based on an electrochemical generator (fuel cells). Research on its creation for small submarines began in our country 30 years ago. In 1978, the Special Design Bureau of Boiler Building became the head developer of propulsive systems with ECG. It used the experience of the Ural Electrochemical Plant and NPO Energia, who managed to create such generators for spacecraft. Based on this experience, the Crystal-20 ECG was designed. However, in the future, these developments did not find their application either on small Piranha submarines or in projects 877/636 Varshavyanka. Open sources do not have information about the problems of domestic marine ECG, however, their absence so far on Russian submarines suggests that the results of full-scale tests do not suit the leadership of the Russian Navy ...

Where does this nonsense come from, plus the fact that the boat "does not fit in the sea"! "Shark" is one of the best boats in the USSR, and in terms of its capabilities in the Arctic, for which it was created, it is the best so far, the best in the world. At least take an interest in this boat first, why the Yankees in every way sought the destruction of the "Sharks", financed their criminal, treacherous destruction by our own hands. The boat also had a record in noise level, being one of the quietest, which was achieved using a number of advanced technologies. In addition, it was an Arctic boat, the use of which was expected under the ice cap of the Arctic Ocean, where the natural crackling of ice made it even more difficult for fighter boats to detect it, and made it impossible to track by satellites, aircraft and surface ships of the enemy. The boat could simply stand at anchor under water without moving. "Shark" is the only boat in the world until now, which could break through almost any Arctic ice when surfacing, which was allowed by its weight and specially reinforced wheelhouse. The boat's comfort and autonomy were also the highest. No missiles? Firstly, they were on boats, all the boats were completed, and secondly, the diameter of the "Sharks" shaft was large, which made it possible to insert any other rocket. Mattress makers, for example, converted four of their Ohio-class missile carriers to cruise missile cassettes. Now we are being comforted with new boats of the Borey type, well, problems with the Bulava, they also have torpedoes, they say! Here, at the Boreyevs, God forbid the Bulava will not take root, with mines it will not be so easy to catch the diameter. Bitter and painful for the "Sharks", the time will come when the traitors will be put up against the wall.

If necessary, a blow to the enemy is delivered simultaneously from different points. But there was no need, she returned the "tadpoles" for recharging and swam away ... Here the large sizes would be very useful ...

Although our price for the head boat, and this is with such a long construction with interruptions, despite the fact that not only the construction costs were charged for this construction, turned out to be much lower than the American "analogue". That is, for two years it will not be missile carriers, as they say "beauty and pride," but cans that can swim under water.

The topic of the composition of the submarine has already been discussed - it was authoritatively proved that 2 nuclear projects and 2 diesel ones are enough. Less than a year after the start of the introduction of projects 955 and 855 into the fleet - "started" - these incredibly high roads - the second are not ready, the third ... etc. etc. - in general, natural delirium and the impression of deliberate stuffing of such information creeps in. Considering that the industry has worked out the lead ships, the serial ones will naturally be cheaper and faster to build (ready-made equipment, workers' skills and their professionalism, the beginning of full-fledged construction financing). There is nothing to muddy the waters - there are two good projects - you need to increase the number of ships, period.

The boats are good and promising. The question now is quantity and cost. For "Ash" I will say this - we did not have such a tray, but a potential enemy will not have it for a long time. We will find out the real truth about the submarine and its performance in ten years.

All that power in the military field is doing now is JUST Tears. At this pace, the country will not have time, by the end of the deployment of the American missile defense. And that means ... well, I won’t talk about sad things ... although when it starts to feel sad there will already be no one here ...

That's the way it always is - first we cut it, sell it for a penny, destroy completely modern military equipment, and then bring down trillions to restore it. And this applies not only to the Navy.
Take, for example, the BZHRK "Well done". In 2005, 12 BZHRK 15P961 "Molodets" with 36 launchers of RT-23 UTTH ballistic missiles were thrown into the trash, despite the fact that in 2002 Russia officially withdrew from START II. And now, according to press reports, we are already in full swing with design work, the purpose of which is to create a new combat railway missile system. And this is done under the same president. A good "boss" in our country ...

Remember, guys who say that the fleet in Russia is not needed or you can save on it - it’s the enemy, regardless of age, rank or position. Russia is MARINE POWER, it must have the best naval forces in the world for stability, for the world in Russia Russia is washed by oceans and seas, so we just need a fleet. Besides the Navy, we need a civilian fleet. Again we must make ships of any class and format, from a small boat. To a cruise ship, icebreakers of all stripes, to fishing trawlers. From river barges and pleasure boats or missiles, to the best yachts in the world. In general, everything related to the ocean, sea or river. Tugs and tankers. Word full range. Screens (airplane-boat). Do economically, efficiently.

Quite right. I would knock out in golden letters wherever the saying of Alexander III is possible: “In the whole world we have only two loyal allies - our army and navy. All the rest, at the first opportunity, will take up arms against us "so that everyone remembers -" The people who do not want to feed their own army will feed someone else's. "

With all the advantages of Project 885, Ash trees have a very significant drawback: the cost of these boats is about one hundred billion rubles.

In principle, this was to be expected somewhere. The same story befell the Americans with the Seawolf project, built three and switched to a cheaper and simpler Virginia. I am not saying that Russia should do the same. In my opinion, at the current level of miniaturization of electronics, control systems, and progress in the automotive industry (non-volatile systems), most of the tasks could be performed by NPLs. Cheaper, much easier to maintain, more secretive, etc. Especially in strategic patrol areas near the coast, they would be a better alternative. And use Ash-tree as a strategic submarine. And no third nuclear submarine project is needed!
