The US Navy was instructed to closely monitor the Arctic

Basic requirements for the fleet:
- to strengthen the Arctic training of the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard;
- Retrofit the Navy with ships of the Arctic classes, new icebreakers;
- establish permanent monitoring and monitoring stations in the Arctic - surface and underwater;
- modernize the GPS system for arctic needs, create sonars of a new type for submarines, taking into account changes in water physics, its salinity, density, etc., due to climate warming and changes in ocean currents.
Recommendations to immediately begin a complete rethinking of the role of the United States in the ice are given in a report by the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, commissioned by the Navy. A special team of scientists and experts of the Navy, co-chaired by retired Admiral Frank Bowman, worked on drafting the “Implications of Climate Change for the US Navy in National Security” document.
Scientists state the fact that warming is already happening, that the Arctic spaces will be free of ice in the summer by the 2030 year (and maybe even earlier). Radical changes will affect the ecology, the water area of the Arctic Ocean, the physical state of water and ice.
The states neighboring with the Arctic will begin the redistribution of borders and shelves, war is possible for natural resources, biological resources of the seas of the North, for the Northern route. The US Navy must be ready for this.
The report itself is a continuation of George Bush’s directive on 2007 on the development of the US Arctic strategy. According to the authors, the “behavior” of Russia was strongly influenced by the new concept - from hoisting the Russian flag on the shelf in 2007 to publishing the new Russian National Security Strategy to 2020 in 2009.
American specialists especially didn’t like the words of the Russian Strategy that in the future conflicts may arise at the borders of Russia around raw materials. And that the settlement of these conflicts does not preclude the use of military force. In the US, it was concluded that Moscow will defend its interests in any way, including the military.
And there is a fight in the Arctic for which, according to the American Geological Survey Administration, more than a quarter of all not yet discovered world oil and gas reserves can be hidden under the Arctic shelf.
