SSGT Ave 675. Hike Kamchatka - the Philippine Sea and back

In this story, all events are taken from life, the surnames, first names and patronymic names, as well as submarine numbers are changed. I was the senior on the march, at that time I was the deputy commander of the division of nuclear submarines, I will participate in the story as ZKD.

The nuclear submarine K-194 was to go on a long-distance march, to occupy an area in the Philippine Sea, where to search for a US nuclear submarine with ballistic missiles.

I was appointed to the post of ZKD quite recently, I didn’t have time to get acquainted with the crews of submarines properly. Before that, I served in Primorye in Pavlovsky Bay as a chief of staff of a division.

On the eve of the release of the submarine in the campaign, the commander of the warhead-2 (rocket) captain 2 rank Podgorny S.M. expelled from the party and left at the base, because he expressed distrust of the submarine commander on the basis of personal relationships and did not want to go on a campaign. Another officer was appointed instead of him from the neighboring boat of captain 3 of rank Babin MP.

21 January 1977, the year moved away from the pier and began to follow the icebreaker "Sadko", because Krashennikova Bay and Avacha Bay forged ice. Raised the containers, the commander of the warhead-2 with personnel went to the upper deck and began docking the starting chains. Night, darkness, ice around, the water is already "not warm." If someone fell into the water, then there would be a faithful corpse. Ice was also at the exit from Avacha Bay, along the coast and in Sarannaya Bay.

22 January 1977 of the year in 05.14 surfaced on a communication session at the periscope depth, determined the location of the beacon. In fact, the place was determined only by the navigator, and the junior navigator, the senior officer and the commander did not participate in this process. I did not interfere, but only watched this presentation. And to observe was that: the navigator made blunders and blunders. The time has come to parse this act. I invited the commander, the first mate and the navigator to the navigation room and showed how the navigator mentioned above, instead of specifying the place, made an error in the 24,7 miles.

Commander Zlydnev began to shout at navigator Pupkin, promising to immediately put him in 10 days of the guardhouse. I interrupted this torrent of insanity in one word: “Shut up!” Then I reminded the commander that his sacred duty was to regularly monitor the navigator’s work and also personally determine the place not to be on Mount Ararat, as happened to Comrade Noah. The commander asked me: “And what kind of submarine was Comrade Noah commanding?” The school did not study the Bible in Soviet times. Even the chief of the general staff Kvashnin in his speech misled Moses with Jesus Christ, saying that Jesus had led Jews into the desert for forty years, so that Commander Noah’s ignorance of Comrade Noah was forgivable.

23 in January. The radio deviation on this submarine is determined with an accuracy of drop-in, therefore the radio direction finding is going “in the wrong steppe”. Began to determine the place of the stars with the help of "Lyra". It was still a sight to see! Three operators are involved in this process. Further, all according to Krylov I.A. Operators looked at “Lira”, like a monkey with glasses, their joint work resembled the work of a swan, cancer and pike. Everything ended in complete insanity - the place was not determined. On the third day I realized that I had to be the navigator on this submarine from the senior on the march. Otherwise, you will have to moor at Mount Ararat.

Thoughts about the location of the submarine sometimes stained comic storiesthat occurred in the life of the crew.

The cabin of the senior assistant to Commander Moskalev was a double, the owner of the cabin slept on the bottom bunk, and a seconded officer of the Political Department Myslyakov sat on the top bunk, a portrait of L.I. Brezhnev. At night, Myslyakov woke up and took the portrait as a senior assistant. Myslyakov: “Lawrence Tarasovich, why aren't you sleeping?” The portrait is silent. Myslyakov the second time asking the same question. The portrait is not responding. Myslyakov decided that the first mate thought about the family, turned over and continued to sleep.

I often talked with the navigator Pupkov, who said that his father was a colonel, served in aviationand mother was a teacher. The navigator married the 2nd year of the school, taking care of the family and children took a lot of time, it was not before studying. For two days of sailing, the error in the place reached 50 miles (92.6 km). As the song says: “He went to Odessa, and went to Kherson ...”

All my efforts to educate the commander, the foreman and navigators on the issues of navigation, resembled a gardener who was trying to grow an apple tree from a railway sleeper.

I spoke with a senior assistant Moskalev, who was born in Ukraine in the family of a deaf-and-dumb shoemaker (father and mother), did not speak for four years. And only thanks to two apprentices father, spoke.

31 in January. An alarm was played. In the 8 compartment there is a filter on the pump that supplies water for cooling the shaft line. So in this filter there is a cork, the thread on it has rotted, the cork has been torn out, and the water began to flow into the compartment. True, midshipman Stepanov and the sailor of the Cucumbers were not taken aback, and the hole was sealed. The commander Zlydnev in the central post began to shout at the watch officer and watch mechanic, which only disorganized their work. I didn’t fulfill my duties: I didn’t increase the course, I didn’t give the command to prepare the main tanks for ballasting.

I became increasingly convinced that the cry was the main factor in the work. Despite my instructions, they are not fulfilling their duties in determining and controlling the location of a submarine. On this day, Pupkin was so determined that the accuracy of the place was degraded by 20 miles. "Liry" took 17 times the Sun or stars, but the resulting places did not take into account, because all definitions were like “bullshit”. Food is prepared a la "Conder": put more fried flour, onions and fat in the soup. In the end, the soup turns out as the sea is flooded with oil and garbage. True, sometimes indulge dumplings and buckwheat cereal with milk.

February 4 16.00 occupied the area in the Philippine Sea, where they began to search for a US nuclear-powered submarine with ballistic missiles. I must say that the task was fantastic, because the US submarine was an order of magnitude less noisy than our K-194, the Americans called the 675 project “roaring cows”. The same was true of hydroacoustic stations. For example: they hear us on 50 km, and we them on 5 km. The personnel of the submarine understood this situation perfectly well, but further upwards through the instance this concept slowly disappeared.

11 February. We are approaching half the time of our trip. My efforts to grow an apple tree from Pupkov (railway sleeper) began to bring some success. He has almost stopped making blunders, but the navigator's knowledge is extremely low: he does not know the gyroscope's pendulum effect, how to take into account the drift and flow, three sextant checks, the use of the BPM-5, etc.

On other issues, Pupkov also did not shine:
On my questions:
- What is the speed of radio waves?
- 300 m / s, the same as the speed of sound.
He further reported that the water in the reactor boils, steam is formed, that neutrons are with a plus and minus sign.
The last tsar in Russia was Alexander, he did not remember the numbers.
After Alexander 1 rules Boris Godunov.
Mazepa died in 1940 year.

12 February. The day is ordinary and similar to all the others. At lunch, midshipman Ivanyuk was congratulated on his birthday. Master of Sports in radio, 1 rank in chess. Everyone with a birthday is baked and handed a cake and a one-time shirt, which is painted in a picturesque manner, and each crew member signs.

The deputy commander for political affairs, Kozhakin, set up his work at a fairly high level. Radio newspapers and combat sheets scourged flaws, caricatures were witty, the text in verses. Today, the coca staged a competition for the best dish: chop, meatballs and lula kebab. Everything was delicious.

Float at depths of 60-140 meters, jump layer somewhere on 110 meters.

Every day we watch movies.

The person told me that some officers are going to complain to Commander Zlydnev on arrival at the base, in which they want to state the facts of insults and rudeness. After that I talked with the commander, who assured me that there would be no complaints, because He will apologize to these officers.

23 February. Somewhere in 04.30 I woke up from a quiet conversation between two sailors who talked about the water entering the compartment, they reported to the central post with lazy voices, they were also answered. I jumped out of bed and a bullet flew out of the cabin and saw the following picture: no one, water gushing from the latrine on the floor, and already managed to fill it, the neck leading into the battery well was already under water. Then I quickly climbed the ladder to the "Chestnut" (intercom), which had two sailors. All the doors leading to the central post were open and hooked, which is strictly prohibited. I rushed to the central post and announced an emergency alarm, increased the speed and began to emerge to a depth of forty meters. As it turned out, water flowed through a leaky closed valve from the drainage line into the dirty water tank No. 2, filled it and then began to flow into the compartment through the ventilation of the tank. On this occasion, I did a review:

- the 2 watch of the compartment when entering the compartment had to report to the central post and announce an emergency alarm;
- watch officer and mechanic dozing, listened to the report;
- Commander Zlydnev also napped;
- Sailor Serdyukov poorly closed the valve, which caused water to enter the compartment.

With such a service organization, the seawater could get into the battery well, which would lead to the release of chlorine, a short circuit and an explosion of the battery. There could be human casualties.

28 February. Inspected the central compartment. Immediately I found three non-standard carriers. It was necessary to explain to the commander of the warhead-5 and commander of the 3 division for a long and hard time that the PEEK-71 should not be violated. A carrier is a lamp, closed by a glass bell and the top is also made of a thick rubber coated wire grille; power is supplied to the lamp through a long wire. Carrying needed during tidy and troubleshooting. Abnormal carrying is when something is missing from what has been described. Such a transport itself becomes a source of fires and electric shock to personnel.

2 March. We went to the last course, now we are going straight to Petropavlovsk. The radio has arrived, where we are notified that starting from Cape Lopatka and further north along the coast, including Avacha Bay, in the ice of 5-7 points. Entered the North Pacific Current, immediately carried to the east, but not as fast as when they were going to the patrol area.

3 March. Almost at Kamchatka. We received a radio yesterday, telling us to occupy the 30 area on 30 miles and wait for further instructions, since bad weather, heavy ice conditions.

Some thoughts on this topic. Heavy ice conditions in this area are quite common. Then four divisions were based there, the United States called this place an "wasp nest." If at such a moment a likely enemy would start fighting against us, then our submarines would be trapped, where they could easily be destroyed.

This question has remained unresolved so far, although an aquapark was built in the Krashennikov bay and much more, but the problem of the trap remained.

7 March. We are swimming in the designated area, waiting for instructions. There are few air regeneration cartridges, I have instructed to switch cartridges per day from 44 to 33 per day. The amount of carbon dioxide in the compartments has increased, people have drowsiness, lethargy. There was also little bread left, so I ordered to limit the rate. But they increased the amount of porridge and snacks.

10 March. Commander Zlydnev and his chief commander Moskalev do not want to think about how they are going to swim, unless 12 March also receives an order to go to the base. The weather turned bad. Visibility 3 Cabel (555,6 meter). Overcast, it is impossible to determine a place by the stars. According to my calculations, regeneration should be enough until March 15.

With 2% carbon dioxide, you can still live, with 3% fainting begins, with 6% deadly.

11 March. The head of the medical service performed an operation on the head of the chemical service, removed appendicitis. All this was done in the mess-room, at a depth of 75 meters, the operation lasted 4 hours. A week has passed, the term of the autonomous campaign has expired. Calculated the remnants of food and air regeneration cartridges. Five more days to go.

15 March. And finally, the radio arrived, where they ordered to pinpoint the place, dive and follow the base under the ice for several hours, where an icebreaker struck a wormwood the size of 5 on 10 miles at the very entrance to the base, it had to surface in the center. Swimming under the ice has a number of features. In case of fire, water inflow from the board, radioactive danger, the submarine will not be able to immediately float to the surface position, ice shell over it, she will have to look for a polynya to ascend. And if within the next minutes or even seconds there is no such one, then it will die. Swimming under the ice is always associated with a certain risk. No wonder the commanders were given the titles Heroes of the Soviet Union for the transfer of the submarine from the Barents Sea to the Pacific Ocean under the ice of the Arctic Ocean, and the rest of the personnel were awarded orders, medals, valuable gifts and diplomas. You could say it was a certain fee for fear.

Some officers in the division said that ZKD luck. I was very worried before a hike or some other new business, and even was afraid, asking myself the question: "Will I cope with this?" This excitement, understanding of responsibility for the crew, for the submarine, made me carefully prepare myself and take measures to prepare the crew and equipment. When the moment of execution of the case arrived, the fear and uncertainty disappeared, and I acted decisively and competently.

Pupkin determined the location with an accuracy of 17 miles, i.e. we would have fallen not in the polynya, but would have been under the ice ...

I took three bearings to the tops of volcanoes, three bearings by radio beacons, took into account the position lines for the stars and the sun. Pelenga almost all agreed at one point. I ordered to dive to the depth of 40 meters, move the 16 nodes and follow the course to the center of the polynya. Then they began to control the place in depths, they were characteristic here.

And so we arrived at the center of the polynya.

Using a periscope, television cameras and echoder, found a divorce in the ice and surfaced without a stroke, so as not to damage the body of the submarine on the ice. The commander otdrail upper manhole hatch. Ice fields stretched from shore to horizon. Silence. The sun was already setting, bluish twilight was coming. The icebreaker and tugboat approached, the submarine was being led to the base. Everything is left behind. Ended another stage in the life of the commander and his crew.

> Who's talking about what, and I'm talking about mine, hydroacoustic. I would like to clarify, if this is possible, who planned the search for American strategists with our nuclear submarines, project 675? Weren't there other projects more suitable for this purpose? Or did everyone in charge also think that the speed of light is 300 m / s? After all, these boats, which are no longer new, with their noise, the level of their own interference and the MGK-100 SJSC, are generally not intended for such operations. And as I understood, in the end, the task was not completed?
> If possible, please comment.

> Best regards.

That's right, what about your r / a! Then, I think even now, I planned the operational management of the Pacific Fleet headquarters, the order for the hike was signed by the Commander of the Pacific Fleet.
The task was, of course, not fulfilled, i.e. we did not detect the SSBN. G / a station:
ShPS MG-10,
ShPS MG-200,
GLS "Plutonium"
MG-15 communication
Those. the stations are very old. My article says so. It was personally clear to me that we were going to beat out a resource.

> What were the organizational conclusions, Alfred Semenovich?
> What was your future career as a commander, navigator and first mate?

Upon arrival at the base, I reported to the division commander about all the ugliness.
The commander was soon transferred to Sevastopol for teaching work at the school.
He was appointed chief commander of the 675 project, later knocked out the 670 project in the bow, was removed and sent to the training squadron in Vladivostok.
The navigator continued to swim in the same position.
My report didn’t go above because: “Not to take out the garbage from the hut” Against this was the CD and the Commander of the FLPL.

At the entrance exams to military schools, you must certainly write an essay and take an exam on the book of Hasek, "The Brave Soldier Schweik", additionally to marimans, due to the specifics, "Overhaul" of Sobolev.

As far as I know in the Navy, everyone should pass admission exams. And how and to whom did the naval commanders pass these tolerances?

It’s very sad, leading positions are held and they don’t report on the actual state of affairs, the icebreaker Sadko and Ivan Susanin are still in service every year with inter-dock and overhaul, boats both boom and even diesel boom

I can assume that the preparation is even worse now. If in Sev.F. they still shoot with a missile or a torpedo, or haven’t heard anything like that for ten years. Recently, all diesel boats that were an order of magnitude quieter than the Atamachs and were designed to guard and help the latter were taken from Krasheninnikov’s to Vladivostok. And a few years ago ALL TANKS were removed from Kamchatka ..... Welcome mattress covers ....

Even before the Kursk submarine disaster, I had to talk to one of my former subordinates about diving experience. He told me that no one needs my experience at present, since there are such submarines as the Kursk, where everything is automated and provided for. Often they look at modern technology as if it were a deity: they forget that the initial data were put into the technology by the same people who tend to make mistakes and who cannot foresee all the events in life. So why do accidents and disasters occur on submarines?
You can arrange these reasons in the following order:
    1. The human factor, i.e. accident or catastrophe occurred due to failure to fulfill one’s duties, failure to comply with documents, neglect of diving experience, hindsight, due to poor training and practical preparedness.
    2. Imperfection of equipment and weapons.
    3. Natural and climatic factors: storm, severe ice conditions, underwater volcanic activity, tsunamis, fog, etc.
    4. Possible disadvantages in the design and construction of submarines.

An interesting story. The author is well done. But sloppiness in all branches of the army was, is and will be. It is a pity that due to the failure to fulfill their duties, people often die. This is sad.

I am not a submariner and not even a sailor (although I should also wear a vest in the form of clothing) I always believed that a submarine is a source of increased danger much more than a tank or even a surface ship, and people there should serve and navigate competent, trained and practically trained, and here is such an "ambush". It seemed to me that we were grunts, but we were on the ground, we had nowhere to fall below her mother, but on the water, and even more so under water ... I'll say this "somewhat confused" by reality. belay

It's simple, when salt water enters the battery, chlorine and hydrogen are released as a result of the reaction of water and the electrolyte, chlorine kills people and hydrogen can explode and cause a fire.
      Something like that.

Chlorine emerges from the electrolyte, but it does not explode, hydrogen explodes, which is intensively released during charging of AB. The author is one hundred percent deputy, only deputy POLIT. And - stupid.

Well, if this is not a notion, then it turns out that our Red Banner was only good enough to die heroically. Apparently, the simple policy "do not wash dirty linen in public" led to the fact that the Soviet army and navy (of the late times) were extolled as the best and invincible. Accordingly, in the Russian army and navy, this has only worsened, which is proved by the fighting in Chechnya.

As a hydroacoustician, hydroacoustics are still a "sextant", not a "sextant". And what did BIP do? In my time (a little later), the navigator became so insolent that he was engaged in wiring the RTS-BCh-7.
