BMP against helicopter
An analysis of the development trends of modern weapons has shown that almost all of the main characteristics of the BMP-2, primarily the guided projectile, require significant improvements. The main importance in this case is the need to defeat modern main combat tanksequipped with dynamic protection. In addition, the conventional BMP-2 firing range at night is 800 meters, while most modern infantry fighting vehicles and tanks are equipped with thermal imagers capable of efficiently recognizing targets at a distance of 2000-2500 meters. The reloading of the “Competition” ATGM armed with the BMP-2 is associated with large time losses and the likelihood of one of the crew members being struck by small arms fire or fragments when reloading the complex. In addition, a serious drawback of the weapon system is the impossibility of firing ATGMs on the go.
The most important task was the improvement of unguided weapons, which are more effective and economical when conducting combat in the near zone against enemy infantry. However, the elimination of this problem on a regular BMP-2 was very limited to the use of a manual fire control system.
The modernization of the machine, carried out by the State Unitary Enterprise “Instrument Design Bureau”, made it possible to increase its firepower compared to the base model 3-4 times. For their work, the authors team "KBP" received the national award "Golden Idea", did not go unnoticed by the Russian development and abroad. The car was demonstrated to the armed forces of India and received high marks from the Indian military experts. Well, the first export contract for the modernization of the 300 BMP-2 to the level of the BMP-2M “Berehok” was concluded with Algeria in the 2005 year.
The BMP-2M “Berezhok” possesses an automated all-daily fire control system (FCS) with an automatic escort, which was unified with the previously developed “Bakhcha” complex. Arms BMP consists of anti-tank guided missiles "Cornet" with an effective range of 5 km. with the possibility of using in daytime and nighttime for highly armored targets, 30-mm cannons to combat the lightly-armored equipment and infantry of the enemy, as well as the AG-17 automatic grenade launcher for working on the enemy’s manpower and trenches. This complex, equipped with a new MSA, allows the BMP to solve the whole range of tasks assigned to heavier combat vehicles (main tanks) at any time of the day.
In addition, a new high-power engine UTD-23 (370 l / s, specific power 28 hp / t.) Versus the standard engine UTD-20 (300 l / s, specific power 23 hp / t ). Installing a more powerful engine allows you to increase the average speed on dirt roads by 30% to 44 km / h, and also increase the specific thrust force at maximum speed by 64%. At the same time, it was possible to reduce by 5% the level of fuel consumption when driving on dirt roads.
There was a replacement of the BOD-2-42 full-time commander's sight with a new combined (day / night) commander that was maximally unified with the gunner's sight. This modernization allowed to improve the accuracy of firing all types of ammunition, including on the move, and to conduct combat operation of the machine around the clock. The new sight is equipped with a laser rangefinder, which is also used as an ATGM guidance device. To improve the accuracy of shooting and improve the conditions of combat work, the weapons stabilizer units were replaced with more modern ones, and a digital ballistic computer with a set of sensors (atmospheric parameters, projectile type, cannon angle, target angular velocity, etc.) was installed. The ammunition of the gun was replenished with a new Trident armor-piercing projectile with higher penetration characteristics (effective range of fire at the BTR-class targets - 2200 m).
The Kornet ATGM equipped with a semi-automatic laser-beam guidance system has a sufficiently high armor penetration (up to 1200 mm), which allows it to hit many modern tanks, including those equipped with dynamic protection. The firing range of the targets during the day is 5500 m, at night the 4500 m. The Kornet is mounted on a multiple-charge launcher that does not require reloading during combat, there are a total of two combat containers for 2 missiles. Increased combat effectiveness is achieved by increasing the maximum damage and increasing the combat rate of fire, the use of the complex also reduces the risk of destruction of the BMP crew. Provided and shooting a volley with two missiles.
As an additional means of enhancing firepower, the BMP-2 “Berehok” includes the 30 mm automatic AG-17 grenade launcher. A vertical stabilized unit with an armored magazine on an 300 grenade is placed at the back of the tower. The use of a grenade launcher during combat, including when shooting in motion, makes it possible to effectively deal with enemy manpower in the folds of the terrain, trenches, and behind any obstacles at a distance from 1700 m.
In the course of further factory tests, the car received a new panoramic sight of the commander, a slightly modified location of the AG-17 grenade launcher, and the launch containers of the Kornet ATGM were protected by armor-firing, in this form the modernized BMP received its name the BMP-2M Berehok.
After modernization, the combat vehicle remained an efficient vehicle, which was able to successfully perform other combat missions (anti-tank, anti-aircraft) at the level of specialized equipment. As a result, its combat effectiveness increased 3,2 times (the combat potential of the weapon systems used was taken into account as performance indicators). So, when performing a standard combat mission (attack of a supporting platoon point by an enhanced BMP company) due to the increased effective range of all types of weapons, including from a grenade launcher, the losses in combat are reduced 2,4-2,6 times, and the cost of the combat mission is reduced in 1,5-1,7 times.
