Pickering was virtually homeless for three years after his divorce in the 1980s: he was huddled in a workshop at that time.
His workshop was located in the industrial zone, where he met many homeless people who lived in broken cars or cabins. Four he settled in his van - at a time especially cold winter. He learned what it means to not have a roof over your head. People told him that they did not want to go to the orphanage: “They will steal my shoes”; "They don't let me take my dog with me."
In 2009, many years after he was on his feet, Pickering, passing through the nearby town of Provo, saw a homeless person. At home, he designed a two-meter residential "cocoon" 60 centimeters wide, mostly from plywood. He said: "But when I returned to give it to that person, I could not find it anywhere."
And then Comrade Pickering decided to develop the concept of an ideal temporary asylum. A few years later, he managed to create a “survival capsule”: a tiny house made of pressed wood with a wooden frame 120 centimeters wide, 2,5 meters long. The roof of the capsule is made of soft plastic. Inside there is enough space for a sleeping bag, a lamp, small things and even a portable toilet. The shelter can be connected to electricity.
Pickering collected five such shelters with his own money, investing approximately 500 dollars in each.
“I didn't do it as a business, I don't want to have a business. I just want to inspire others, ”he says, explaining that he wrote down instructions for making a house on DVD. Homeless people could pay for them little by little, “so that they had a little reason to be proud, and they could say“ this is mine ”, or they could conclude a formal rental agreement.
Shelters are made on wheels so that they can be placed inside empty warehouses, hangars or on any suitable piece of land.
