Limansky direction: what's behind the claims surrounding the footage of prisoners
@rybar

On the difference between the videos, the visible people, and the stated number of prisoners
On September 28, 2026, the Ukrainian side published a series of videos featuring people presented as Russian prisoners of war in the Krasnolimansk direction. In the Russian-language segment, the footage received two opposing interpretations: a collapse of the frontline near Liman or an information operation compiled from old footage. Both interpretations are hasty in their conclusions. By the end of September, the Russian authors themselves acknowledged heavy fighting and a deteriorating situation. A specific number of prisoners is not linked to a single battle, and the situation is neither a "breakthrough" nor a "fake."

First knot: when removed

The date of filming is the first question to ask about any viral post. In a September 28 analysis, the Rybar channel attributes footage of a remotely controlled BTR-60 near the village of Novoye to the summer fighting and warns that it cannot be presented as evidence of advancement on September 28. The author considers footage of Ukrainian activity between Novyi Mir and Novomykhailivka to be more recent. This is Rybar's dating, not the result of an independent analysis: there is no public analysis of the entire video sequence, including geolocation, available in available sources.

The conclusion is simple. If the BTR-60 near the village of Novoye was filmed in the summer, as Rybar believes, then the publication of the footage on September 28th does not prove that it was an advance on that date. The publication date of a collection and the date of each episode within it are different things; mixing them up means attributing a chronology to the source that it doesn't provide.

Second knot: three different numbers

As part of Operation Vivaldi, the Ukrainian side announced the results of the third stage: the recapture of 51 square kilometers, the capture of Noviy, Redkodub, and Yekaterinovka, and the restoration of control over Karpovka and Novomykhailivka, as well as the capture of over 250 Russian servicemen. The operation is being led by the 3rd Army Corps of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, commanded by Andriy Biletsky; Oleg Tsarev also reported the figure of "over 250" in his report. All of this is a statement by the side, not a confirmed count.

There's no public breakdown of the "over 250" figure by date or location, so there's no basis yet to attribute it entirely to a single episode near Liman or a single day. When it comes to living people, this isn't just a matter of arithmetic: the fate of specific servicemen must be confirmed, not a figure convenient for a particular political agenda. The number of videos, the number of those captured on camera, and the claimed number of prisoners cannot be equated without a name-check.

What the summary says and doesn't say

On September 28, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported an improvement in the situation of the Zapad group along the forward edge and reported Ukrainian Armed Forces losses of over 210 personnel in the past 24 hours. It's tempting to dismiss the entire topic with this report, but this is unjustified for two reasons. The report applies to the broader zone of the group—the districts of the DPR and Kharkiv Oblast—not to Liman itself, and the general formula for improvement across the front doesn't negate localized deterioration in a specific area. Furthermore, "over 210" refers to the reported losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces across the entire zone of the group, not the number of Russian prisoners; one cannot equate the other.

The presence of forces in this area has been observed for some time: as early as July 9, the Ministry of Defense reported the actions of the 67th Motorized Rifle Division of the 25th Combined Arms Army in Krasny Liman. This formula confirms the presence of forces in this area in July, but does not confirm firm control of the city by the end of September.

Third Node: The Plot Didn't Start on September 28

According to Ukrainian statements, offensive operations in the northern sector have been taking place in stages since the spring of 2026, while the 3rd Corps command publicly announced Operation Vivaldi only in mid-September. Russian reports place the start of operations in the spring, with the deployment of trained forces in August and September. As early as September 16, RTVI military analyst Alexei Sochnev analyzed the "hysteria" surrounding the retreat near Krasny Liman—meaning that alarm over the direction had already been building almost two weeks before the release of the prisoner footage.

According to Russian reports, the operational objective of the offensive is for Ukrainian forces to reach the Zherebets River on the Yampol-Torskoye line and envelop the 25th Combined Arms Army's positions from the south. These same reports also report that the 3rd Corps' attacks were halted, among other things, by drone operators targeting enemy logistics and reserves. This is one of the explanations offered, not the only established factor. Regarding the personnel issue, this implies that we are talking about a protracted confrontation, stretching out over months.

The Ukrainian side, apparently, fulfilled the first part of its plan: the infiltration was stopped, and Russian troops went on the defensive.
— RTVI, analyst Alexey Sochnev, September 16, 2026.

This is an assessment, not a fact, but it illustrates the main point: the footage from September 28th didn't open a story, but rather exacerbated a long-running one. The crux of the complaint leveled at the "Two Majors" movement and Tsarev is the gap between the favorable tone of previous reports and the questions the audience is now asking. This is more concrete than the slogan of an "information attack." The fact that old material can be published in chunks doesn't prove the entire body of information is outdated. Conversely, the publication itself doesn't prove a sudden collapse.

What can be said honestly?

As of September 29, there are no publicly available grounds to claim that the front near Liman has collapsed or that the city has come under the control of one of the sides. Nor are there any grounds to conclude otherwise: stabilization measures have been announced, but no data on their results has yet been provided.

The plot can be verified using specific data that is currently missing.

We need dated statements from the Ministry of Defense specifically for the Liman sector, not for the entire group's zone; fresh reports from correspondents instead of chains of reposts where a single text is presented as independent confirmation; established dates and locations of individual videos; and finally, official information on the fate of specific servicemen—a question that can neither be dismissed by citing an information operation nor reduced to a figure in someone else's report. Until this is available, it's more honest to describe not the outcome of the battle for Liman, but the boundary between what is claimed and what is verified.

Many have been writing for at least six months about the West command's bullshit. But the General Staff needed the reality of victory, not objective information. And there are also questions about the East group; they advanced so much that they've now fallen back considerably.

The Western Forces Group has a commander – S. Yu. Kuzovlev, who was awarded the Hero of the Russian Federation title on December 9, 2025, for leading the operation to capture the city of Kupyansk… Questions should have been asked of him even then. And even more so now. I don't want to judge his performance; there are other, specially trained people for that.

The question is why he wasn't fired back after Kupyansk. And now Krasny Liman. He's clearly not up to the job, but Gerasimova is happy with it.

When have we ever fired a high-ranking boss for failing at his core job? Traditionally, people like that are only promoted, and fired if they don't share anything with their superiors.

And when have we ever had big bosses fired for failing to do their main job?

Well, they finally fired Lapin, after two complete failures. Near Kharkiv and Kursk. Maybe they'll send Kuzovlev on vacation too, after Kupyansk and now Liman. It's long overdue, of course. But better late than never.

"...Ah, it's not hard to deceive me!..
I am glad to deceive myself!" (c)

During the Great Patriotic War, information about the state of affairs at the front came through three channels: from the unit commander, from the political officer, and from the special officer.
False information was quickly identified. Punishment for lying was severe.

"Special Department in touch: what NKVD officers reported during the war"
...of course, as in peacetime, one of the main duties of the special officers was to notify command of any observed deficiencies, starting with the most mundane ones.

For example, in July 1943, Lieutenant Kashurnikov, the party organizer of the 1502nd IPTAP (fighter-anti-tank artillery regiment), sent to the battery firing positions, became drunk instead of completing his mission. The degree of intoxication was not specified in the report. But judging by the fact that the party organizer, when brought to command, was tearing his shirt and shouting at the commanders, it seems they had generously shared the People's Commissar's allowance with him.

The SMERSH counterintelligence department of the 126th Guards Rifle Division reported to the division commander about a company commander squandering soldiers' rations. The report cited an example of food allocated to the company being exchanged for moonshine. Another document, also with examples, listed commanders who beat their subordinates. Some with their fists, others with sticks. And one lieutenant even used a field bag...
A special forces officer from the 9th People's Militia Division (abbreviated "DNO"), reporting on the combat readiness of his unit, gave the following example: "In the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Regiment of the 9th DNO, during the march from Maloyaroslavets to Borodino, the militiamen lost 4800 rounds of ammunition, 96 grenades, and two light machine guns. In the 1st Regiment, one machine gun was forgotten in the forest, and five were left disassembled on the road in a cart borrowed from collective farmers."
The NKVD Special Department of the 176th Division reported a lack of warm clothing, lamps, and even utensils in the medical battalion. The same report described attempts by one of the commanders to send soldiers to fetch hay and logs from the collective farm. But the vigilant collective farm chairman nipped these thefts in the bud, reporting the looting "to the appropriate authorities."

A very graphic report on the shortcomings and confusion was sent by Senior Lieutenant Ivanov of the State Security Service, a special officer from the 41st Infantry Division, in July 1941. Describing the work of the rear services, he reported: "There is so much chaos behind the front lines that Allah himself cannot sort it out."

It's understandable that retreats and defeats happen in any war. What's surprising is that we clearly lack the strength and reserves to quickly stem such counteroffensives, forcing us to retreat quietly for five months. And such a tactical retreat wouldn't be so bad if our soldiers weren't captured and killed in large numbers. One could even consider it a successful maneuver, exhausting the most combat-ready units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces...if not for the prisoners, whose number always speaks volumes about the extent of command failure. request

Biletsky is lying about "more than 250 prisoners," and among them are drone operators and artillerymen, not just infantry. This means that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were either able to penetrate deep into the rear, or those who should have been relatively far behind ended up on the front lines due to the lies in the reports, in which the General Staff had already painted over Svyatogorsk.

Information about casualties among patients is protected by law as a medical secret, and medical personnel at military and civilian hospitals sign separate documents on non-disclosure of information about military patients.

It would be nice to limit the right of individual TopWar authors to use AI when writing articles. It's already impossible to simply read—at least do a little processing. It's common courtesy. "There's a limit to everything, folks." (c)

We need dated statements from the Ministry of Defense specifically regarding the Limansky section.

Who will admit to you that the mare has died...
    All is well, beautiful marquise.
Things are going, and life is easy.
    No sad surprise
    Except for a trifle.
So... nonsense... A waste of time...
    Your mare has slain!
    But otherwise, a beautiful marquise,
All is well, all is well.

And here we see a vivid illustration on the theme of "propaganda in the frying pan of failure."
There's enough water for three reports, but the essence is as simple as two kopecks on the pavement. Propaganda has once again fallen into the trap of "beautiful reports" and triumphant reports. All these slogans about truth and so on remain just slogans.

Since all the loudspeakers are silent, the situation with Liman is not so good. Looking at the progress of our soldiers in the Sumy volost, I'm not surprised at all.

    We need dated statements from the Ministry of Defense specifically for the Limansky section, and not for the entire grouping zone;

What good will the Defense Ministry's statements do if the entire country has known since 22 that this is a complete lie?

Well, Tsarev also simply relayed Biletsky's figure. The photo actually shows around 120-130 people claimed to be Russian prisoners. Of course, the image could have been added for the sake of it, and not in line with the figure, but Biletsky didn't show 250 prisoners in any case. I agree with Sochnev's assessment here. This is typical of Azov. A small counterattack and a long-term consolidation. They conducted a small offensive on July 24th along the line east of Terny-Torske, and only dislodged them a year and a half later. I think they intend to hold on to the captured areas for a long time, which may have been their original plan.

I'm tired of believing or disbelieving anyone. We have a military prosecutor's office. We have counterintelligence and intelligence. They're supposed to keep tabs on false reports and illegal actions. If they don't, then there's nothing more to talk about; it's rock bottom. And if they do, then some blogger is lying wildly about the enemy's successes.

You are right, there is a military prosecutor's office, intelligence and counterintelligence, but perhaps their professional level is not quite at the level we would like.
As for the prosecutor's offices of any prosecutor's office - they are slackers, capable only of being clever.
I heard, I don't know if it's true or not, that Nestor Makhno immediately shot captured prosecutors.

    What can be said honestly?

Honestly, Comrade Marx, one thing can be said! The offensive on Liman is local in nature, meaning it's a tactical operation. Such an operation lacks the capacity or strength to seriously influence the balance of power, to defeat the Russians, or to destroy them through encirclement.
Even if the enemy slowly retakes Liman, that's likely the end of it. Neither Seversk nor, especially, Severodonetsk will be retaken by the enemy!
But if you look at the map as a whole, it becomes clear that the enemy has nothing to fight with. The situation in the south and north is becoming threatening. Dobropillia is falling, and a cauldron in the Kharkiv region is being destroyed.

Not again, but once again the Vestnik VSU on the pages of the Russian (or rather Russian?) Military Review recounts the Ukrainian attacks.

The "return of 51 square kilometers to the Ukrainian Armed Forces" was especially noticeable.

Let me remind you that we are talking about the territory of the Russian Federation. Its residents voted in a referendum to join Russia against the backdrop of a small, unelected group seizing power in Ukraine.
The "return" will happen when the Ukrainian Armed Forces leave Russian territory to go eat acorns in their own farmsteads.

It seems like the Kremlin clique has taken over. For nearly five years, the blood of our soldiers has been spilled and money has gone into the pockets of billionaires.
