Geopolitical mosaic: Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan is called “another Putin”, and Radzivinovich thinks the Kremlin will prolong the life of sober Russian officials to 150 years
State Department spokeswoman Jane Psaki said that Washington had assisted the opposition in the amount of 123 million US dollars. Now we are studying the issue of help for 127 millions. She also denied rumors about the cessation of material assistance, which was promised to the "opposition" (55 million).
Thus, we will add on our own, no crisis, no sequestration of the budget and the declared strategic reorientation towards the APR does not prevent the US administration from operating in Syria. Probably, the dispensation of democracy there is vital for the American people - no less than it needed to democratize Iraq, which half of the US population led by George W. Bush could not show on the map.
Hezbollah in Aleppo. About four thousand Lebanese Hezbollah fighters reached Aleppo, the Syrian Free Army said in a statement, MIGnews.com.
CCA spokesman Luay Mekdad said in an interview with Ash-Sharq al-Awsat: “The number of Hezbollah militants in Aleppo exceeded 4 thousands of people. They are stationed in the barracks of the Military Engineering Academy and are preparing for an attack on the city. ” He also said: “The participation of Hezbollah in the battle for Aleppo will not change the balance of power in the city. His defenders are well prepared for the assault, and are awaiting him in the previously prepared fortified areas. ”
Open participation of Hezbollah in the Syrian war demonstrates the inability of the Assad regime to cope with the SSA, Mekdad said. He says: "The expansion of Hezbollah’s military activity in Syria shows that the regular army is exhausted and needs support."
However, US military analysts predict that in Aleppo, as in other parts of the country, the Assad army will apply the new tactics developed during the storming of El Quseir. Tactics include the interaction of regular, irregular and allied formations, the full use of the advantages in firepower and the ability to coordinate major operations, isolation and the slow destruction of the rebels in the blocked "boilers."
The Syrian "opposition" has put forward an ultimatum to Russia. The SSA command demanded that the Russian Federation stop interfering with international interference in the Syrian conflict, the newspaper writes "Work".
"Oppositionists" wrote a letter to the UN Security Council. The message put forward an ultimatum to Russia. “On behalf of the citizens of El-Qusayr, the Supreme Military Council demands that Russia abandon its obstacles to international intervention,” said a statement signed by the head of the Supreme Military Council of the Syrian Free Army, Salim Idris. “We ask the Security Council to take tough actions against this aggression,” the document says. “We demand that international pressure be extended to the Lebanese government to take measures to withdraw Hezbollah’s Syrian territory (movement fighters), otherwise we will be forced to turn our fight against the Assad criminal regime into an extended cross-border conflict.”
The reason for the ultimatum was the blockade by Russia of 1 June of the UN Security Council statement in connection with the events in El Quseir, where government forces attacked the militants.
The situation with the message to the Security Council in an interview "Voice of Russia" commented on the expert on the Middle East and Central Asia, Irina Zvyagelskaya.
The ultimatum is presented to the expert by a document worsening the situation. However, "it is already so heavy that one more letter, one less, the difference is small." The letter is another signal for those who want to avoid the collapse of Syria, to urgently begin negotiations, said Zvyaglskaya.
As for whether the Syrian opposition is capable of attacking Lebanon, as stated in the message, the expert believes that "they can do something nasty, but they are unlikely to be able to start a full-scale war in or around Lebanon."
Mines for Russians. Yevgeny Poddubny ("Vesti") told that the terrorists fired on a residential area in the center of Damascus. The shells exploded in the area where the building of the Russian embassy is located.
Killed a passerby. Four members of the Syrian security forces, who were guarding the area around the Russian mission, were injured. Two of the victims guarded the outer perimeter of the Russian embassy.
Militants fired from the residential area of Jobar, it is still partially controlled by opposition forces. Some few meters - and the mines would have fallen on the territory of the Russian mission. Experts say that the militants obviously adjusted the mortar fire, each new volley was closer to the territory of the embassy than the previous one.
In Jobar a few months are fighting. According to the military, the militants of the Al-Nusra Front (al-Qaida cells in Syria) are holding defenses in abandoned buildings.
"We have a strong army ..." The Syrian leadership sees no need to recruit volunteers from other countries to fight the rebels. This was stated by Mohamed Said Akil, the Syrian Ambassador to Ukraine, reports Newsru.ua.
“Our country does not need soldiers, military support from the outside, because we have a strong army ... There is no such need,” comrade Ambassador stated in an interview to Inter TV channel.
The program talked about the head of the All-Ukrainian Union of Homeless Officers Sergey Razumovsky initiated the creation of a volunteer group. His goal is to go to Syria to help her leadership in the fight against the rebels in exchange for the opportunity to settle in Syria and get a number of social privileges and benefits there.
Akil promised to pass the appeal of volunteers to President Assad, but predicts that the answer will be a refusal.
Finyan Cunningham rejoices Russian: “Hurray!” The well-known publicist is concerned that the archetype of the “evil empire” continues to exist, but it is no longer applicable to the USSR, but to the United States. According to the author, the American ruling elite and its military-industrial complex increasingly correspond to lawlessness, barbarism and aggressiveness, which were once attributed to American propaganda of Russia. Cunningham material leads resource mycatbirdseat.com (translation source - Mixednews.ru).
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the American role in inciting the most expensive and most destructive wars in the world can no longer be in doubt, the author writes. America-led dismemberment by the NATO bloc of Yugoslavia, the invasion of Somalia and Iraq in the 1990's are highlighted. But these episodes are just a bloody foreplay ...
The wars in Afghanistan and again in Iraq, started in 2001 and 2003 respectively, resulted in the death of up to two million people. More people were injured, maimed, poisoned or lost shelter. The total financial bill for these two wars alone is 6 trillions of dollars - more than a third of the US government debt. Moreover, this debt, according to Cunningham, turned out to be one of the reasons for the immersion of the rest of the world "into a deadly economic abyss."
In 2011, there was a NATO intervention in Libya. It was intended, as stated, to “protect human lives” from the “oppressive regime of Gaddafi”. And what? The rescue operation turned into air support from the US Air Force of Islamist militants who had connections with the Afghan Mujahideen and Al-Qaeda.
Cunningham called the war in Syria the “highlight of the program” of American imperialism: there a sovereign government opposes more than two years of aggression. The main sponsors of the terrorist attack on this state are the United States, along with its regional allies: Israel, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. The geopolitics of Washington in recent years has changed from a "war with terrorists" to a "war for terrorists." America is now on the side of mercenaries, thugs and rapists.
What does the United States need from all the countries they are attacking? Cunningham has the answer to this question:
Today, both ordinary Americans and Europeans are beginning to see clearly and realize that their true enemies, both inside and outside the country, are wealthy oligarchs.
The S-300s will ensure that US warships and fighters from both NATO and Israel are likely to abandon the criminal attack on Syria. Irritated by the United States and its allies from Russian defensive intervention in Syria, as well as the deployment of the naval fleet Russia in the Eastern Mediterranean, it is very obvious, the author writes. A U.S.-led covert war in Syria has put Russians in control, he notes.
Most ordinary people know that the intervention of the Russians in Syria is a chance to "interrupt the bloody march of the West over the land of this country and the world as a whole."
The UN and “sufficient grounds.” A United Nations commission to investigate possible human rights violations in Syria yesterday issued a report confirming the use of chemical weapons during the conflict. It follows from the document that “there are reasonable grounds for believing that chemical warfare agents were used as a weapon,” the channel "RT".
The report does not contain unambiguous information about who used chemical weapons.
The authors of the report investigated the period from January 15 to May 15. According to Commissioner Carla Del Ponte, the final conclusions can be made only on the basis of the analysis of samples taken at the site of the alleged attacks. Now they are being explored in France. Until that time, the media called not to raise panic.
"Irrefutable evidence." The French authorities have irrefutable evidence that sarin was used in Syria. This was stated by the head of the French Foreign Ministry, Laurent Fabius, reports MIGnews.com with reference to France Press.
He stated that the analysis of samples carried out in a French laboratory showed that they contain sarin. “Now France is confident that sarin has been used in limited amounts in Syria several times,” the foreign minister said.
In late May, the media reported that French secret services were studying materials presented by the journalist of the Monde newspaper, which allegedly testified to the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian authorities against the opposition.
American weakness. US officials say Russia found the United States intelligence information about the use of chemical weapons by the Bashar al-Assad government against its own citizens unconvincing, reports correspondent RIA "Novosti" Alexey Bogdanovsky with reference to the Associated Press.
An anonymous source in Washington told the agency that the US diplomatic delegation visited Russia in May and provided the Russian authorities with evidence of the use of chemical weapons inside the country. However, this information was not convinced by the Russian colleagues.
Representatives from the White House and the State Department, Jay Carney and Jane Psaki, said that the United States still did not reach a final conclusion on whether chemical weapons were used in Syria, and if so, by whom. The US was also not in a hurry to support the intelligence of France, which stated that it had irrefutable evidence of the use of chemical weapons by the Assad forces.
Foreign jihadists have found their death in Syria. Over the past 11 months, 280 militants from various states, including 16 from Russia, have been killed in Syria. The overwhelming majority of them belonged to the Djabhat en Nusra group. This is reported in the report of experts from the Washington Institute of the Middle East and the New York company "Flashpoint Global Partners", reports Newsru.com with reference to ITAR-TASS.
According to experts, 2012 citizens of Libya, 2013 - Tunisia, 60 - Saudi Arabia, 47 - Jordan, 44 - Egypt, 32 - Lebanon were among those killed from July 27 to May 20. As for Russia, five militants from Chechnya were killed in Syria, four from Dagestan and another seven from other Russian regions. Full list of names is missing.
Of the former Soviet republics whose citizens died during the fighting in the SAR, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan are mentioned in the report.
Also in this list of "suppliers" were: Turkey, Algeria, Morocco, United Arab Emirates, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Denmark, Bulgaria, Australia.
Recently, reminds Newsru.com, it became known about the death in Syria of US citizen Nicole Mansfield, who converted to Islam and fought on the side of the opposition.
Hot Turkish news. Participants in a mass protest, which is held in Istanbul for several days, are not going to stop their speeches, even despite the apologies made by the government, reports today correspondent RIA "News" Alexander Elistratov.
Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arink made a public apology to the victims of the police during the dispersal of peaceful demonstrators in Texim Square. True, he refused to apologize to "those who provoked the unrest in Turkish cities and tried to encroach on the freedom of Turkish citizens."
“We are not satisfied with the speeches of the deputy prime minister, the Turks will accept only the apologies of the head of government himself - Recep Erdogan, who is the main conductor of the current authorities' policies,” a graduate of Istanbul University Kerem Ogush told the News correspondent on Wednesday night. With him, according to the vast majority of Istanbul, who until this morning did not leave the city center. Thousands of young people, mostly from the age of 20 to 30 years, settled down both on the Texim Square itself and in the Gezi Park adjacent to it.
And what about Erdogan?
And he, as reported correspondent ITAR-TASS Pervin Mamed-zade, spoke yesterday in front of ... MPs in the capital of Algeria, where he said that Syrian President Bashar Assad "will have to pay sooner or later for the massacre he organized."
“Bashar Asad outdid his father in crimes and slaughter, and it’s impossible to forgive,” the head of government said.
Ankara, Erdogan continued, "supports the demands of the people of Syria, who are committed to democracy and want change."
Meanwhile, Turkey wanted change too.
"Another Putin." In the article "From the candidate for sultan to the dictator" («Cumhuriyet», Turkey; source of translation - "InoSMI") Nilgun Dzherrahoglu assesses the effect of the protest actions in Taksim abroad, with the following words: “The mask is dropped! Within a few days, Erdogan lost all his persuasiveness outside Turkey! ”One Western diplomat, whose point of view is reflected in this statement, notes:“ Within a week Erdogan lost his reputation that had been created for ten years! ”
According to an unnamed diplomat, the issue is not only in publications in the press. In the evening, on TV channels, all of humanity is watching how the Turkish police use violence against the protesters. The information that more journalists are kept in Turkish prisons than in Iranian ones is known to everyone who is sitting at TV sets.
The most polite epithet to Erdogan: "Another Putin."
Erdogan lost credibility, however, his power did not suffer. A blow to Erdogan’s power can be inflicted either by his “Justice and Development Party” or by the international situation.
Today, no one, except Erdogan, the author considers, does not consider the events in Turkey as the work of some “extremists”, as “manipulation of the main opposition party” or “attempted coup”. Defining the protest actions spread across Turkey as an “iceberg edge”, the international press views them as the result of: 1) authoritarianism, 2) intoxication with power and arrogance, 3) transition from moderate Islam to the line of extreme Islamism. Moreover, the absence of signs of sympathy after the outbreak of protests and the entry into confrontation with demonstrators reinforce the perception that in Turkey there is a dangerous problem of Erdogan.
One of the leading newspapers in Italy, Repubblica, writes that Erdogan "pressed the gas of Islamism through the hegemony of the Justice and Development Party." The newspaper has a photo of a girl in a red anorak that stands in front of the policemen who water it from water cannons ...
Review of Western newspapers on the "Putin" theme made "Inopressa".
An article in The Wall Street Journal is titled "Turkey is erupting like a volcano." The environmental campaign against the development project, which, like many other things in today's Turkey, was personally conceived and managed by Erdogan, "touched a nerve: it stirred concern about the growing power of the prime minister." Erdogan has transformed Turkey, but the success has turned his head, says the newspaper: he "with amazing complacency is trying to concentrate power in his hands." He wants to change the constitution in order to head Turkey for another 10 years (“as his friend Putin in Russia,” the article says).
Erdogan claims that the protests are organized by "extremists", and the park will still be built up. The newspaper considers his reaction to be "hard of hearing" and dangerous-confrontational, since "the fight is not for Islam, but for democracy."
“Intolerance can destroy Erdogan,” warns The Financial Times. Current protests would not have gained a national scale, if not for Erdogan and his authoritarian course. But the prime minister does not realize this: on the contrary, he “denounces a certain intangible plot” and “instructs the special services to reveal the“ hand of foreigners ”.
Erdogan invades privacy: restricts the trade in alcohol and the right to abortion. Premier intimidated by major media. “Erdogan has problems with pluralism. This is shameful, ”concludes the publication.
"In Turkey, Prime Minister Erdogan applies the tactics of a" strong hand, "such a headline gives the comment to The Washington Post.
There is democracy in Turkey, but there is no longer a strong free press, the publication points out. No less than 49 journalists — a world record — are imprisoned for their professional activities.
The prime minister said the protests were organized by extremists and sponsored by foreigners. “He vowed to continue the destruction of the park, contrary to the decision of the court, which prohibits it. Such a reaction could be expected from a “strong hand” such as Vladimir Putin, from whom Erdogan seems to adopt something, ”the article says. The newspaper reminds: Erdogan proposed to expand the powers of the president, in other words, he is preparing the ground for becoming president and remaining in power for another 10 years.
Frames coming from Turkey make you think that the second most popular politician in the country after Ataturk may well lose power, writes the German magazine "Der Spiegel". Tayyip Erdogan is accused of the same thing that the former authoritarian leadership of Turkey was accused of. According to Spiegel, the biggest danger for Erdogan is his self-confidence. The prime minister called the protesters a “gang of marauders,” the protests “opposition manipulations,” and Twitter, used by demonstrators to exchange information and coordinate their actions, was “the greatest danger to society.”
According to the law, Erdogan has no right to participate in elections more, and therefore he is going to repeat what Putin has done: in 2014, the current prime minister is going to take the office of president, after having given it much more significant powers. Not all of Erdogan’s comrades in the party, emphasizes Der Spiegel, support him in this endeavor: “Even now there is reason to believe that there is an inner-party struggle for power.”
About Twitter. Turkish police today arrested at least 25 people in Izmir for reporting on Twitter, which contained “slander” and “misinformation,” reports RIA News" with reference to Press TV.
According to the representative of the opposition, they are all detained for "appeals for protests." Police are also looking for other bloggers.
Earlier, Prime Minister Erdogan said that many users spread lies in social networks and incite anti-government sentiment.
According to local media, many Turks use social networks to organize demonstrations and warn each other about the places where the police used tear gas and water cannons.
Tightening anti-Iran sanctions. The President of the United States approved the introduction of additional sanctions against Iran concerning the Iranian national currency and its automobile industry. "Reedus" with reference to Interfax.
The new sanctions provide for measures against foreign financial institutions that conduct operations in the national currency of Iran or have significant accounts denominated in it. Sanctions for trading in riyals will be applied for the first time.
Also, sanctions will be imposed on legal entities and individuals supplying Iran with goods or services related to the production of motor vehicles and related equipment in the country.
The goal of the measures taken is, as before, the prevention of Iran’s possession of nuclear weapons.
"Patriots" will go to Jordan. The United States sends Patriot complexes and F-16 fighters to Jordan, reports "Lenta.ru" with reference to France-Presse.
Patriot and F-16 will be involved in joint US-Jordan exercises, the Pentagon said, adding that “after the completion of the exercises, some of these weapons may remain in the country if requested by the Jordanian authorities.” Fighters and missile systems, according to representatives of the US defense department, will increase the defense potential of Jordan in the context of the ongoing civil war in neighboring Syria.
An Egyptian blogger was given half a year in prison. Popular Egyptian blogger and political activist Ahmed Duma was sentenced to six months in prison for insulting the country's president, reports "Lenta.ru" with reference to France Press. Soon the Duma, however, will hold free. While his appeal is being considered, he is released on bail of 5 thousand Egyptian pounds (720 dollars).
In an interview with the media, Duma called M. Mursi a criminal and a murderer, which served as the basis for bringing the blogger to criminal responsibility. He was arrested on April 30 when he spoke about the role of the president in the bloody clashes in Port Said between the police and local residents, primarily football fans.
News about the ATT. As transmits correspondent RIA "Novosti" Ivan ZakharchenkoThe head of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, called on states that are the largest manufacturers and arms dealers in the world to join the international arms trade treaty, which is open for signature on Monday.
“I especially appeal to those who are the largest arms dealers,” said Ban Ki-moon at the UN headquarters. According to him, “the effectiveness of the treaty will depend on the willingness of states to fulfill it”.
David Cameron knows that will strengthen Britain. The House of Lords of Great Britain approved the government’s plans to allow the registration of same-sex unions in England and Wales "Vesti".
After two days of debate, amendments that would prevent the bill from moving forward were rejected. 242 member voted for this.
According to Prime Minister David Cameron, same-sex marriages will benefit the country and even make it stronger. Parliament expects to prepare a final version of the document by next summer.
The burden of threatening Ukraine turkish riots. The leader of the nationalist party "Svoboda" Oleg Tyagnibok threatened the Ukrainian authorities with unrest - like those that occur in Turkey. About this, as transmits "Lenta.ru" With reference to UNIAN, he said yesterday during a speech in the Verkhovna Rada.
The reason for his dissatisfaction was the persecution of activists of the political force led by him. According to the words of the last week, nine supporters of Freedom were arrested.
As reported by RBC-Ukraine, Tyagnibok reported surveillance, allegedly organized by the security forces for the journalist of the newspaper Kommersant-Ukraine Artem Skoropadsky. According to the deputy, there is a "real threat to his life." “All the processes of democracy by the government collapse, and I want to say to this authority: if you don’t stop, look at what is happening in Turkey. The same is waiting for you! ”The politician emphasized.
Russia and Japan: the timing of negotiations on a peace treaty is agreed. As it is today correspondent ITAR-TASS Vasily Golovnin, the governments of Russia and Japan are negotiating the issue of holding a new round of negotiations at the level of deputy foreign ministers on the elaboration of a peace treaty between the two countries, but the dates have not yet been determined. This was announced by the representative of the Russian department of the Japanese Foreign Ministry.
He denied reports by the Japanese press that Deputy Foreign Minister Masadzi Matsuyama is going to Russia this month specifically to resume negotiations on a peace treaty. “He is going with a different purpose, in particular, to participate in the economic forum in St. Petersburg,” the diplomat said. “The question of his meetings in Moscow is being considered now.”
“The dates for a new round of negotiations on a peace treaty at the level of deputy ministers are agreed,” the diplomat said. “We cannot say that they will take place in June.”
Geopolitical twist economic competition. In the US, a ban on the import of iPhones-4 smartphones and Tablet PCs “iPads-2” (no joke) was introduced.
As announced yesterday by the Federal Commission for International Trade, the decision was made due to the fact that when developing these mobile devices Apple Inc. violated the rights to inventions belonging to its main competitor, the South Korean company Samsung Electronics, reports correspondent ITAR-TASS Ivan Lebedev.
Apple brand smartphones and tablets are manufactured in China. Therefore, the Commission’s verdict makes it impossible for the corporation to sell them on the American market. Theoretically, it threatens Apple with multi-billion dollar losses.
Barack Obama can cancel this decision within sixty days: his administration is against such bans. Just yesterday, the White House sent a letter to Congress proposing a law restricting the powers of the Commission.
How to "earn" in the American consulates. The former head of the Visa Section of the American Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam is accused of bribery and fraud. 41-year-old Michael Todd Shestak, who yesterday appeared before a federal court in Washington, is charged with extortion and taking bribes in the amount from 20 to 70 thousands of dollars for a visa. Shestak, who acted in collusion with several US and Vietnamese citizens, managed to earn several million dollars, according to "Vesti" with reference to ITAR-TASS.
The American led the US Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City until September 2012. He was arrested in Los Angeles in May.
American poisoner listened to the prosecution. Mississippi resident James Everett Datchke charged with sending ricin letters, reports "Lenta.ru" with reference to the Associated Press.
A federal jury in Mississippi approved five charges against Datchke, including the production and storage of poisonous substances, a threat to the security of the president and others, and an attempt to thwart the investigation. If the court fully admits Ditchke’s guilt, he faces life imprisonment and a fine of hundreds of thousands of US dollars.
Lenta reminds that in early April, letters were sent to President Barack Obama, Mississippi senator Roger Wicker and judges from the same state of Sadie Holland who contained ricin. Envelopes with a hazardous substance were detected during the pre-sorting of mail, and none of the recipients was hurt.
Defender of the Taliban. US Army Major Nidal Hassan, accused of killing an 13 man at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, said he attacked his fellow servicemen in order to protect the Taliban. Reports about it "Lenta.ru" with reference to France-Presse.
According to Hassan, his colleagues were to be sent to Afghanistan, and therefore he decided to "protect the leaders of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the Taliban, from them."
On this statement, Nidal Hassan is going to build his defense, in connection with which he asked the court to postpone the next meeting, which was to be held on June 4. According to the major, he needs at least three months to prepare for the meeting. The judge agreed to postpone the meeting.
Lenta reminds us that 5 in November 2009, Major Hassan, who served as a military psychiatrist based at Fort Hood in Texas, opened fire on his fellow soldiers who were undergoing medical examination before being sent to Afghanistan. As a result, 13 people died, another 32 was injured. Major himself during the detention received severe gunshot wounds, as a result of which he was paralyzed below the belt. In the event that Hassan is found guilty, he will face the death penalty.
To which the American tax authorities descend money subjects. The tax service of the USA again appeared in the center of a major scandal. As it turned out, the IRS spent 50 million dollars on luxury hotels and drinks, as well as baseball tickets for its employees, transfers "RT".
As it turned out, from 2010 to 2012. The IRS spent almost $ 50 million on conferences, during which employees of the organization more than once stayed in the presidential suites and went to baseball games. Such information appeared during the IRS audit by one of the committees of the Congress.
The August 2010 conference in Anaheim, California alone cost the IRS $ 4 million. About the 2600 managers who participated in the event lived not just anywhere, but in presidential apartments. The average cost of such a number is 1500-3500 $ per night. Fifteen guest lecturers were paid a fee of $ 135 thousand (each). For example, one of them read a report on the theme “Leadership through art”.
Employees also received many additional bonuses, including baseball tickets.
The new head of the IRS, Danny Werfel, didn’t find anything better than to say that these expenses are remnants of the past.
"Foreign element" at the ceremony. A graduate of Alabama High School, one might say, was deprived of a law degree. The girl thus paid for trying to put on the ceremony the traditional decoration of their Indian ancestors, passes "RT".
“I don’t think this is fair,” said 17-year-old Chelsea Ramer in an interview with WPMI-TV. “Real discrimination.”
Ramer, a member of the Poarch Creek Band Indian community, was going to decorate herself with a pen at the graduation ceremony of Escambia High School. But, according to the administration, it would go against the school policy prohibiting "extraneous elements" on the clothes of graduates.
"Beats on a muzzle, means, has the right to beat". In the article "Russia in the form of a quilt" (Nowa Europa Wschodnia, Poland; source of translation - "InoSMI") Tomasz Horbowski talks about the collection of reports written by the long-term Gazeta Wyborcza reporter in Moscow, Vatslav Radzivinovich - “Gogol in the Google era”.
The texts with which the book is filled, in due time (1998-2012 years) were written for the newspaper and are sketches from Russian life. Russia, which Radzivinovich portrays, is often frightening. The principle on which this country functions, as Leo Tolstoy formulated, is unchanged: "It hits the face, which means it has the right to beat." The author tells of a terrible, unprincipled country, where the police robbing, rape and kidnap people with impunity, where the Moscow authorities get rid of immigrants, where mothers search for their dead for their homeland sons killed in dead cars. This is the Russia of the Chechen war, the authoritarian rule of Putin, Beslan, the Dubrovka Theater, the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, the war with Georgia and the tragedy of the Kursk submarine, the journalist writes.
Radzivinovich reveals the absurdity and mimicry of Russian reality. He describes how once the authorities of Samara, before visiting the city of Putin, brought deficient buckwheat to the city and ordered the shops to lower prices for it - or to close. And once Vladimir Putin decided to ride a Lada, and his associates prepared a spare car that was being driven behind him, in case the trouble-free product of the Russian car industry had broken down.
In a curious report, the author of the collection tells about a pamphlet written by the Kremlin bureaucrats (secret). It explains how to look like a Russian official and how to ensure his longevity. “One should be slim, sober and tidy,” Radzivinovich quotes the council. Anyone who adheres to all these rules will be able to live to 150 years. So promises the Kremlin.
Among other things, the book talks a lot about women carrying the country on their shoulders, the main problem of which is drinking men who are notoriously self-sufficient. The man who is now at the helm of the state, also received an impartial characteristic. Quote:
