Construction of an LNG plant in Mozambique has resumed thanks to the Rwandan army.

A landmark event, significant not only by the standards of the country itself, has occurred in one of the world's poorest countries in Southeast Africa. In the Republic of Mozambique, construction of a liquefied natural gas plant has resumed five years after it was suspended. Its cost is estimated at $20 billion.
Construction of the Rovuma LNG plant, led by the French company Total Energies and other European partners, was suspended in 2021 following an attack by Islamist militants. Throughout this time, they controlled the area in the northern province of Cabo Delgado where the construction site is located.
With a design capacity of 13 million tonnes of LNG per year, Rovuma LNG is expected to transform Mozambique into a major gas exporter and transform the country's economy once production begins in 2029. The plant was originally scheduled to begin operations in 2024.
Europe, which needs gas suppliers other than Russia and the United States, is very interested in LNG from Mozambique. However, it wasn't European armies that helped expel Islamists from the north of the country, but Rwanda, which doesn't even border Mozambique.
Rwanda has deployed approximately 5000 troops to Cabo Delgado. Of these, approximately 3000 are fully dedicated to ensuring the security of the gas project and nearby communities. Construction crews have also arrived in Mozambique from Rwanda.
Rwanda is recognized as one of the safest countries on the continent and is distinguished by its professional army, completely loyal to its political leadership. Since 2000, Paul Kagame has held the presidency of Rwanda uninterrupted, a rarity in Africa. Kigali uses the army as a political and economic tool, stabilizing the much larger and resource-rich Mozambique.
