Islands of Discord: Argentina Announces Sanctions Against Oil Production in the Falklands

Argentine President Javier Miley announced restrictive measures against British and Israeli oil companies conducting exploration in the disputed Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas). This announcement comes amid signals from the United States that it may reconsider its neutrality in this territorial conflict.

In a televised address to citizens, Miley called the Sea Lion field, where British Rockhopper Exploration and Israeli Navitas Petroleum plan to begin production, a direct threat to Argentina's sovereignty.

An estimated 1,7 billion barrels of oil are located 210 kilometers off the islands' coast. The Argentine leader announced a bill imposing sanctions on these companies, their shareholders, and suppliers, and also announced plans to build a naval base on Tierra del Fuego.

London responded by stating that its sovereignty over the islands is unquestionable and recalling the 2013 referendum, in which 99,8% of residents voted to retain British status. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting stressed that the UK's commitment to the Falkland Islands is absolute and undeniable.

Miley's statement followed an interview with Donald Trump. The US president suggested that Washington might not support London in the event of a conflict, citing Britain's insufficient defense spending and its refusal to participate in the military campaign against Iran. Asked about US assistance to Britain, Trump responded that Britain had failed to assist him in the Iran war.

As the NYT notes, the escalation around the islands also has domestic political implications for Miley: his rating has fallen to 34%, and there is still a year left until the presidential elections.

The Malvinas Islands remain a sensitive issue for Argentines' national identity. This summer, after their victory over England, the national team's players unfurled a banner declaring their ownership of the islands, prompting an investigation by FIFA.

This territorial issue can be settled once and for all by recognizing them as Israeli territory. Trump loves Israel, Miley loves Israel, and since the majority loves Israel, Britain must give in. laughing

The piss of the Brits angry It's time for the Argentines to take revenge for their defeat in 1982! The British certainly won't be able to assemble a fleet like they did in 1982, but they'll definitely find help to shut down the troughs they can send!

I second that. And we need to quickly throw something more lethal at the Argentines. And then get together and land troops in England. How beautiful!

Of course they can assemble it; they even have aircraft carriers. But today a new weapon has appeared: drones. Now the Anglo-Saxons will have to think twice about that.

By the way, this is a good reason to screw over the British with someone else's hands, to be concerned about Argentina's sovereignty, to support them with anti-ship missiles (which they lacked last time), especially since today they are no longer capable of assembling a combat-ready fleet to support the colony.
It's time to put an end to British colonialism... or at least come up with some other slogan, like "highly likely" laughing
In fact, today, any global turmoil that involves the West is frankly beneficial to us—Africa for France, the Falklands for the British, Iran for the US. Everything works to split their coalitions.

The Argentines can do it. Their fleet is exactly the same as it was in the early to mid-80s, right around the time of the Falklands War...

I wouldn't be surprised if the British and Israelis, having found oil in the Falkland Islands, also find ancient scrolls on the islands, which will say that the Falkland land was promised by God to one of the lost tribes of Israel. . . so be kinder to the owners of the promised lands. . . yeah, yeah . . . hi

I wouldn't be surprised if the British and Israelis found oil in the Falkland Islands.

There's no need to search for it; gas and oil deposits on the archipelago's shelf were discovered back in the 70s, which led to Britain's refusal to comply with the UN Decolonization Committee's terms. If you read the article carefully, you'll see that sanctions are imposed not for oil exploration, but for its production...

$2,6 million worth of concrete has already been poured into the Ushuia base in Tierra del Fuego, and that's all for now. Miley is desperately trying to lure the Americans to the base. But there might not be enough time—there are presidential elections in Argentina next year. It all depends on Donald.

London responded by stating that sovereignty over the islands was beyond question and recalling the 2013 referendum, in which 99,8% of residents voted to retain British status.
