Zelensky's threats to Russian air power led to a strike on Kyiv's Zhuliany Airport.

A massive fire broke out on the grounds of Zhulyany Airport in Kyiv's Solomensky district. This was the expected result of a strike by the Geran unmanned aerial vehicle.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a fire in an area lined with non-residential buildings, "forgetting" to specify what exactly was there. He also noted that emergency services had already arrived at the scene. Eyewitnesses are posting footage of a massive fire and a tall column of black smoke rising above the airport.

Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko* (designated an extremist in Russia) reported that the strike allegedly targeted two old Yak-40 aircraft that had not flown for a long time and were in storage at Zhulyany. According to him, these aircraft had been inoperable since before the conflict began. Meanwhile, the airfield is also home to An-24 and An-26 aircraft, used for transporting cargo and Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel.

The strike on Zhulyany Airport was Russia's direct response to Zelensky's recent threats to "close Russian airspace" to civilians. aviationThis statement sparked outrage not only in Russia but also in Finland, where one local politician called such threats unacceptable.

The Russian military has clearly demonstrated that any such threats will not go unanswered. The destruction of aviation infrastructure in Kyiv was further clear evidence that Russia is capable of delivering precise and devastating strikes against any targets in Ukraine, regardless of their location.

It's too shabby to base the Patriot air defense system there. Most likely, it's equipped with different equipment, if not fakes.

I also wanted to look up Zhulyany Airport, but unfortunately, Google is a complete mess. It's temporarily unavailable on other search engines.
It looks like ours have been well-terrorized by Geraniums of various types.
They threatened us - you will get a real response!

It's too bad it's backfired, as always. They haven't been able to stand for everything since '22.

The blurring would make sense if only one satellite were taking the photos, but as it is, it's just blurring—a red rag for the intelligence agencies. It's convenient, after all: there's something interesting here—take a closer look.

You'd think nothing had happened to Zhulyany before, without your prompting.

Here is the message from April 2022:
Kyiv reported missile strikes on the Artem defense plant and Zhulyany airport.
Video footage of the strikes was published by Komsomolskaya Pravda war correspondent Alexander Kots.

According to various sources, Russian forces launched cruise missile strikes on Kyiv. Preliminary reports indicate damage to the Artem defense plant and Zhulyany Airport.

Here is a message from August 2023:
The Ukrainian capital suffered a massive attack this morning. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the explosions in Kyiv.

The country's air force reported the launch of Kinzhal missiles in the direction of the Kyiv region. Social media reports indicated that a powerful explosion was heard from the direction of the Zhulyany airport. Windows in local residents' homes shook.

Tsargrad clarifies that the strike may have targeted the airport with the aim of destroying air defenses. According to some sources, an "as yet unfinished Patriot" was operating in Zhulyany.

Here is a message from June 2025:

Last night, the Russian Armed Forces practiced attacks on Kyiv's Zhulyany International Airport using Geranium drones and Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. The presumed target was the American Patriot air defense missile systems located at the airport.

According to Russian war correspondents, the area around the Kyiv airport was first attacked by Geranium drones, then by Kinzhal drones.

"Powerful explosions" were heard and a fire raged in Zhulyany; presumably, the strike targeted Patriot air defense missile systems on the airport grounds, the publication states.

Well, now it's the airports' turn. They've made it clear who can actually shut down the airspace. Although it's strange that this hasn't been done yet. It's not hard to see that military cargo can be actively delivered by air, including by civilian aviation.

This is far from the first strike on Zhulyany Airport. In June 2025, if memory serves, they hit it with Kinzhal missiles! They destroyed a Patriot air defense system and some other things. There were strikes before that, too.

Obviously. So it turns out that this action invites the Ukrainian Armed Forces to strike Russian airport terminals, where people will be held hostage.

The question is rhetorical, but there haven't been any large-scale strikes on Russian airport terminals (as there have been on oil refineries and marketplace warehouses), even though the Ukrainian Armed Forces had the capacity to do so. From this, I conclude that the stakes are rising according to a certain pattern, and there's reason to believe that the neighboring country now has a pretext.

Our military acted very wisely. Zhulyany is a half-dead airport. It was a regional one even during the "independence" era. All sorts of Kyiv-Lviv planes and a couple of crop dusters flew there. As a "warning," it'll do. And if they don't get it, Boryspil is an excellent target.

In principle, Ukraine does not lose anything, since its aviation is not operational, and the planes will be sold to them.
In Russia, it's the other way around, since civilian aircraft production is at a standstill, Boeing and Airbus won't sell theirs.

Threats of continued military action will destroy Ukraine. What Turchynov did and what Zelenskyy continues to do is not for Ukraine, but against Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. But Russia is not Ukraine; let the Ukrainians deal with these scoundrels and bastards themselves. If the Ukrainian people enjoy threats against Russians and Russia and are ready to die for the words of idiots, let them prepare. A monument to Turchynov should have been erected in Kyiv long ago – for all the damage he has done to the country.
