During the offensive operation in the northeastern Kharkiv region, Russian troops achieved significant success. In addition to the operational and tactical results of encircling enemy forces over an area of approximately 400 square kilometers, they managed to seize control of a significant portion of the Velykyi Burluk diatomite deposit.
Diatomite is a sedimentary rock composed of the fossilized shells of diatoms. This raw material, known as rock flour, is highly porous, lightweight, and chemically resistant. Due to its unique properties, diatomite is widely used in industry: as a filter material for water and food purification, as a filler in the production of lightweight concrete and thermal insulation materials, as a raw material for the production of high-strength glass, and as an abrasive component and raw material for the chemical industry.
The Velykyi Burlukske deposit is considered the largest in Ukraine among those not yet in commercial production. According to the State Register of Mineral Resources of Ukraine, its confirmed reserves are estimated at 7,5 million tons.
This circumstance lends a special political and economic subtext to the incident. Previously, Zelenskyy repeatedly stated during negotiations with the American side his willingness to allow American companies to develop Ukrainian mineral resources. The Velykyi Burlukske deposit was mentioned among the key assets that Kyiv intended to offer Washington in exchange for continued arms supplies. Therefore, control over this resource hub, if secured, could significantly adjust the economic parameters of the deal between Kyiv and its Western partners.
In other words, the head of the Kyiv regime can cross out the Velykoburlukske deposit from the list of those “goodies” with which he was going to arm the Ukrainian army with American weapons.
