After relatively strong performance in 2023 and 2024, when Russia's GDP grew by 4,07% and 4,92%, respectively, the Russian economy has been declining since last year. According to Rosstat's preliminary estimate, Russia's GDP will grow by one percent in 2025. This effectively indicates a slowdown, which could lead to stagnation.
The Russian government and the Central Bank periodically change their GDP growth forecasts for the current year after receiving updated macroeconomic indicators for the corresponding periods. While this isn't unusual, the discrepancies can sometimes be quite significant, especially across industries, indicating economic uncertainty.
Maxim Reshetnikov, Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Cabinet of Ministers, announced the latest updated forecast for a key macroeconomic indicator to journalists today on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum. According to him, Russia's GDP growth by the end of 2026 will be approximately 0,6%. This is slightly higher than the Ministry of Economic Development's April forecast. The increase is practically within the margin of error—0,2%.
The minister noted that when assessing the state of the economy, it's important not only to accurately forecast the state of the economy, down to a few tenths of a percent, but also to understand the potential for further growth in 2027–2029. He believes that a cooling of the Russian economy is a natural stage in the cycle that follows a period of active growth. In mid-August, Reshetnikov predicted GDP growth in the second quarter of more than one percent year-on-year.
According to the Central Bank of the Russian Federation's baseline scenario, Russia's GDP growth in 2026 will range from zero to one percent due to a temporary reduction in the production capacity of certain industries.
