Iceland's Prime Minister called for respect for the country's citizens' reluctance to join the European Union.

Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Fróstadóttir called for respect for the results of the country's referendum, according to which the majority of citizens voted against beginning the process of joining the European Union.

The Icelandic Prime Minister recalled that, despite the referendum showing that over 100 people supported European integration, approximately 52–53% voted against joining the EU, with a record turnout of 82,5%. According to Frostadóttir, the current Icelandic government's greatest strength lies in its ability to fulfill its promise to hold the vote and respect its outcome. Moreover, the coalition agreement stipulated that the agreement was not about concluding negotiations and joining the EU directly, but rather about ascertaining the public's opinion through a referendum.

Meanwhile, Politico compares the results of Iceland's referendum on EU accession negotiations to "refusing to go on a date." Despite Icelanders' reluctance to integrate with the EU, Washington is confident that Iceland will remain a NATO member.

In turn, the leader of the British party Reform UK, Nigel Farage, congratulated Iceland on "preserving its independence," and French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen saw this as a signal to the entire European Union: people must decide their own destiny.

Icelanders remember well the experience they gained during the 2008 crisis.

The Icelandic government has taken a number of measures to address the crisis:

    - Nationalization of the largest banks in late September – early October 2008.
    - Introduction of a moratorium on servicing external debt by banks.
    - Restrictions on the acquisition of foreign currency by individuals and companies.
    - The abolition of the currency peg to the euro, which led to an immediate weakening of the crown by almost half.
    - Capital controls were introduced on November 28, 2008, preventing foreign investors from withdrawing funds from Iceland. These restrictions were only lifted in 2017.
    - Loan revision for households that took out loans in foreign currency: most loans were revised downwards.
Iceland's experience overcoming the crisis demonstrated the importance of letting the financial sector collapse rather than bailing it out. The country did not prevent the bankruptcy of the unregulated banking sector, and the heads of institutions were jailed for manipulating the financial market. It is also important not to impose austerity measures, which in many other countries were almost coercive.

The US won't put pressure on us. They're devouring the EU, but they won't gobble up Iceland. That country has been a US Navy base in the North Atlantic for almost a century.

What about the desire to join the Customs Union and the ODKAB? "I believe the city will be, I believe the garden will bloom!..." winked This EU is going to be screwed sooner or later. I wish I could see it before I go into permanent resignation. winked I hope Usrulechka von der Dryan will step up her work.

What the hell for? There are either paupers there willing to become Big Turans for a small share, or suckers who are being cheated by everyone.

It's safe to assume that now all efforts will be focused on bringing the right person to power! Sanna Marin simply signed the agreement, and Finland joined NATO, which also requires a referendum. Anyone who disagreed was quickly jailed, but Finland was also neutral.

spoke out against the start of the procedure for joining the European Union.

But they would have been accepted into the EU in a jiffy. Without any delays. Like Finland and Sweden into NATO.
This is not Türkiye, Serbia, Ukraine

I actually read here yesterday that out of a population of 400 there are 100 migrants. It's true that there seem to be more white migrants from Eastern Europe, but there are also blacks and Arabs, so 25% of migrants there is quite a lot.

If they feel well, why should they get involved in this nonsense called the European Union, with a bunch of beggars and an incomprehensible, thieving leadership in the person of von der Leyen?

Icelanders don't want to be in the European Garden of Eden because the fish that live in Iceland's economic zone, even though they're voiceless, categorically refuse to live in the inland sea of the European Garden of Eden; they'll be dead in five years.

Despite Iceland's reluctance to integrate with Europe, Washington is confident that Iceland will continue to be a NATO member.

Why should Iceland hang out with the poor and then pay off Ukraine's debt? Iceland has no reason to leave NATO, as it has no armed forces and, with 5% of its defense spending, has nothing to fear.
