What is known about the Iskander-1000?


Three hundred and ninety, five hundred and fifty, and one thousand kilometers. In August 2026, these three numbers appeared side by side, as if they were successive stages of a single modernization. But each number has its own object, source, and method of origin. The first is found in the Ukrainian departmental card for the 9M723 family, the second was announced in a statement about rocket The third, 9M723-2, was born two years earlier as an expert evaluation of another, larger product. The mere name in the press doesn't necessarily make these descriptions of the same missile.



First came the name


History The Iskander-1000 didn't begin with an index number, a military approval decree, or a specification sheet. It began with a photo. In 2024, in a report from a test site, experts spotted a missile whose outline resembled the 9M723, but it appeared larger. There was no explanation for the missile. All that remained were the body proportions and a reasonable assumption: if the additional volume were devoted to fuel, the range could increase significantly.

MilitaryRussia editor-in-chief Dmitry Kornev in a conversation with Izvestia On August 28, 2026, he directly named the Iskander-1000, a term coined by the Russian expert community. The number in the name denoted not the published test result, but a calculated estimate of the missile's possible range. Foreign authors quickly picked up on the apt label, and it soon gained more currency than the image that had conceived it.

In August 2024, "Military Review" will already disassembled the proposed option for 1000–1300 km: more energy-dense fuel, increased volume, a lighter warhead, and anti-aircraft maneuvers. It was a coherent engineering model, but still a model. In February 2025, the VO returned to Kapustin Yar's footage and foreign range estimates, separately stipulating that this version has not yet received reliable confirmation.

This caveat is now more important than the prediction itself. It separates the observation from the conclusion: the large device in the footage existed, but its name, range, and connection to the serial 9M723 remained a reconstruction. Therefore, the new report about the 9M723-2 cannot simply be tacked on to the old name and the previous thousand-kilometer range declared proven.

What exactly is stated about the 9M723-2


On August 27, 2026, The War Zone reported a statement from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. According to the GUR, an updated 9M723-2 ballistic missile was used for the first time during one of the summer combined strikes on Kyiv. The same statement referred to it as the "Iskander-1000," although the stated range was up to 550 km, not 1,000 km. The increase was attributed to a larger engine and a modified launcher. This means that the new information primarily stems from the combination of the index and the range, rather than a publicly disclosed designation.


The GUR's initial post focused primarily on the Iskander-M's component base and production cooperation: the agency reported on 140 components, 35 enterprises, and 108 officials and employees. Information on the 9M723-2 occupied a single, intermediate section. This is neither a technical announcement nor a test report; the published text does not contain a methodology for determining new characteristics.

This report contains new information, but its status is determined by the wording itself. It is a statement from a party to the conflict, not a publicly available Russian product datasheet. The GUR did not specify the date of the specific strike, the launch area, or the method for determining the range. The War Zone publication did not provide a detailed description of the components shown: it does not specify what exactly is depicted, where and when they were found, how the origin and storage of the debris were recorded, or how they were classified as a separate modification.

The current War & Sanctions page also doesn't bridge the gap. It describes the 9M723 ballistic missile in general, stating its range of 390 km, warhead weight of 450 kg, and listing its components. There's no separate data sheet for the 9M723-2, including its length, launch weight, engine index, and test conditions, in the accessible version of the page.

If we accept both Ukrainian estimates as the baseline, the difference between 390 and 550 km is 160 km, or approximately 41 percent. This isn't a cosmetic addition to the round contractual figure. It has practical implications for calculations and the launcher: the same target range allows for a deeper launch area, thus increasing the leeway for position selection. However, arithmetic only confirms the size of the difference between the two published estimates. It doesn't explain how this difference was derived.

Three hundred kilograms that don't add up


A solid-fuel rocket doesn't have a "range" knob that can be adjusted separately from other parameters. The engineer distributes the launch mass among the body, propellant, control system, maneuvering aids, and payload. As the trajectory changes, so do the aerodynamic losses and control requirements. High target speed is required—part of the energy reserve can't be traded for kilometers in advance. As the body lengthens, the question arises whether the launch vehicle will fit into the existing vehicle and whether it can support the new weight.

This is where secondary publications begin to contradict each other. The previous open reconstruction explained the warhead reduction to approximately 300 kg as a result of the need to achieve a range of approximately 1000 km. In the retelling of the 2026 statement, the same approximately 300 kg is compared to a range of 550 km. The War & Sanctions data sheet lists 450 kg for the 9M723. Defense Express, citing unofficial Russian sources, cites 300–350 kg for the prospective variant and compares this with 410 or 610 kg for different versions of the 9M723-1 warhead. There is no unified table of warhead types, flight profiles, and their corresponding ranges. These figures merely illustrate the range of versions; they cannot be combined into a single configuration.

It's impossible to extract a convenient figure from this discrepancy. If the estimates are correct, various explanations are possible. The missile could have retained a greater velocity reserve for the terminal maneuver; 550 km may have been not the maximum, but a limit established for a specific episode; the warhead mass and the entire flight profile could have changed. Finally, we may be dealing with two different missiles, given the same name by the press. Without telemetry, body geometry, and propellant mass, all four versions remain versions.

The same applies to the launcher. The initial GUR report stated that the 9M723-2 missile is part of a system called "Bora-M"; it also mentioned an extended launcher. Defense Express repeats this name and writes that the longer missile requires a new vehicle. However, there is no public Russian confirmation of the Bora-M designation, no photographs of the vehicle with dimensions, or an index number for its equipment. The new launcher remains a good diagnostic indicator for future verification. "Bora-M" is currently only a name announced by the GUR, not a ready-made line in the Russian technical specifications.

Therefore, the parameters for a 10-15 percent engine increase, new fuel, and a lighter warhead are useful not as specifications for the 9M723-2, but as a list of questions. Engineering analysis must stop exactly where the measurements end.


9B899 ​​appeared before the new missile


A similar substitution occurred with the decoy module. The updated War & Sanctions datasheet lists the designation 9B899 ​​among the 9M723 components. This proximity alone easily leads to a dramatic conclusion: the new missile has acquired a new means of penetrating missile defenses. The chronology prevents this.

In March 2022, The War Zone analyzed recovered devices ejected by 9M723 missiles and pointed out strong signs of the 9B899 ​​designation. Markings were observed on the objects; according to the publication, the devices could have combined active radio frequency jamming and a false heat source, but the exact design was not disclosed. This means that the device itself was discovered in open sources four years before the first reported use of the 9M723-2.

Even the index numbers in open sources differ. RUSI lists six 9B999 decoys at the base of 9M723, while The War Zone and the CAT-UXO catalog use the designation 9B899. Available publications make it impossible to determine whether this is a typo, a misattribution, or possibly a different product. For a history built on the accuracy of index numbers, this discrepancy itself is more important than the choice of a convenient number.

For this new topic, the boundary of evidence is important: the presence of 9B899 ​​in the family card doesn't indicate whether the unit was first installed on the 9M723-2, whether it has changed, or whether the previous application pattern has been retained.

One should be even more careful with efficiency. A false target, by the very physics of the task, complicates selection: air defense calculations (Defense) it is necessary to distinguish a combat object from a simulator and issue an interception decision promptly. However, the presence of such a device does not provide a numerical answer. This requires, at a minimum, data on the number of launches, interceptor types, detection conditions, missile consumption, success criteria, and a comparison of episodes with the same configuration. Such a denominator is not available in the public domain.

Therefore, the assertion that the 9B899 ​​specifically reduced the effectiveness of Ukrainian air defense remains a hypothesis. A component's markings are not a product specification, and the presence of a device is not a measured effectiveness. This does not diminish the engineering significance of decoys; it simply precludes attributing to them a result that open data does not distinguish among the speed, trajectory, maneuverability, saturation, and capabilities of a specific missile defense system.

Three lines instead of one label


As of August 28, 2026, the publicly available picture fits not into one sensational missile, but into three lines. The first is the basic 9M723 family and the designation 9M723-1, to which GUR assigns a range of 390 km, while Russian public reviews have traditionally stated a limit of up to 500 km. The second is the declared 9M723-2 GUR with a range of up to 550 km and first use in the summer of 2026. The third is a major promising product from footage from 2024, dubbed "Iskander-1000" by experts and with an estimated range of 900-1000 km, with some projections as high as 1300 km. These numbers do not constitute a progress scale: they describe objects of varying status and evaluation methods.

627 km is also cropping up in current comparisons. In January 2020, that was the distance from the test site boundary to the impact site of debris in the Baiganinsky district of Kazakhstan; initial reports linked the debris to an Iskander-M. However, the Kazakh Ministry of Defense refuted this attribution: according to preliminary data from a joint commission, the find was attributed to a geophysical rocket used for upper atmospheric research. The distance from the test site boundary is in any case not equal to the flight range, much less the rated range. This episode is significant not as a point on a scale, but as an example of how a disputed number continues to serve as an argument six years later.

A practical conclusion can be drawn without revealing classified specifications. If the claimed 550 km range is confirmed, then, all other things being equal, the launcher could be positioned up to 160 km further from the same target than the Ukrainian estimate for the baseline version. This is a useful and verifiable advantage. But it doesn't transform the missile into a thousand-kilometer missile, nor does it prove that the large missile demonstrated in 2024 and the 9M723-2 deployed in 2026 are the same thing.

In the same Izvestia article, Kornev believes that the existence of the new munition, if it actually exists, is unlikely to be officially announced:

"Any use of the latest types of military equipment loves silence."

If this assessment is correct, the identity will have to be established not by press releases, but by tedious material evidence: official designation, airframe length, launch weight, engine markings, a photograph of a different launch vehicle, a traced debris trail, or a published test result. Until at least a few such supports appear, the correct engineering verdict is as follows: the claim of a 9M723-2 with a range of 550 km exists; a serial missile with a range of 1000 km has not been confirmed in open data.

The name "Iskander-1000" was born from a still image without explanation and remains a convenient label for various descriptions; the next verifiable milestone isn't another range estimate, but a sign that will link this image to a specific product. This conclusion works within the current limits of open data: 550 kilometers should remain 550 kilometers, not be transformed into a thousand by the power of a name.
